About

The Story of the Left Hand Artist Group

When artist Don Wilson founded the Left Hand Artist Group in the fall of 2013, his vision was of a group of artists coming together to support other artists and enrich their community at the same time. From those modest beginnings, with just a small handful of people, LHAG—as we affectionately refer to it—has grown to nearly 1,700 members and represents the many colors of the art world, including visual artists, musicians, multi-media creators, poets, filmmakers and those gifted in culinary arts. We even have non-artist members who support our vision. All are based in Colorado and all believe in the LHAG spirit of sharing inspiration and giving back to the community.

In less than five years, we’ve raised tens of thousands of dollars for charity, have sold art through the help of our exhibits around the Longmont area, made deep and lasting connections within and outside of the group and created memories many of us will never forget. Coming up on its fifth anniversary, LHAG is facing the biggest challenge of its young life—and its biggest opportunity.

The week of Sept. 9, we are launching a 45-day Kickstarter campaign with a goal of raising a minimum of $50,000. Why? Because to ensure the survival of the Left Hand Artist Group, we need a place to call home.

Since its founding, LHAG has been able to store art, host events, and gather for monthly meetings through the generosity of supporting businesses that donated space, including Forrest Fleming at Instant Imprints and the Left Hand Brewing Co., where the group was born. But the group’s growth has made it necessary for us to leave the cocoon and fly on our own.

One important function of LHAG is to have artists’ work be shown and sold at various supporting regional businesses. An all-volunteer group of people hang the art at each location, typically rotating it once a month. That means the art pieces not sold or not currently being hung anywhere publicly need to be warehoused. This will be the primary function of our new place: to serve as a repository for all of the pieces created by LHAG members.

But we have bigger plans for our new home. Along with storing art we want to have a space to create art. Ideally, it will be a place where we can host events, such as the concerts and art shows that are an important part of LHAG’s colorful history. And we want to host events that draw in the larger community, such as fundraisers, Bar Mitzvahs, quinceañeras, etc. These will help us be self-sustaining. Will there be an “LHAG Community Art Center & Recording Studio?" There could be, with your support.

One of the group’s major events is its annual “LHAG Label Show,” at which the artists donate up to 100 percent of the proceeds from the art they sell at that show. These donations go to charity, and in 2018 the Label Show benefited two: The Left Hand Brewing Foundation and the Colorado/ Wyoming chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The latter is self-explanatory. The former is run under the umbrella of the Left Hand Brewing Co. and provides monetary support and other assistance to local individuals and causes that need it right now—local people and groups facing an immediate crisis.

To date, between its Label Show and its house concerts, the Left Hand Artist Group has donated more than $47,000 to local nonprofits. On top of that, the LHAG human-scale foosball table (you’re reading that correctly) has made prominent and memorable appearances at local events, such as Rhythm on the River and ArtWalk. LHAG artists have participated in many downtown events promoted by Visit Longmont; and LHAG’s many downtown shows open to the public brought attendees food, poetry and song; great craft beer; and visual art created by members of their own community.

Getting our own space is daunting—and exciting! Once we’re in our own space, we will establish a board of directors, nonprofit status, and subcommittees that manage various parts of the group. We’re already holding elections for an interim board that will guide us through the next six months and drive our search for a new space.

But it all starts here, with this Kickstarter campaign. That’s why we’re reaching out to ask for your support if you believe in our mission and want to help us take this next, giant step in the growth of the Left Hand Artist Group.

Thank you!

Risks and challenges

To ensure the survival of the Left Hand Artist Group, we need a space to warehouse art, as well as serve as our home base for holding meetings, art classes, musical events and serve as a creative gathering place for the community.
