Lorentz by Leyden: elegant mechanical dresswatches
The Leyden Lorentz is an elegant and understated dress watch, powered by a Swiss Made hand-wound movement.
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Fri, October 12 2018 3:00 PM UTC +00:00.
Hello and welcome to the Lorentz Kickstarter campaign.
Let's start with a short introduction. My name is Jonah and I am the founder of Leyden Watches: a small, one-man watch company originally founded in the city of Leiden, The Netherlands. In December 2016, my previous campaign for the Leyden Velox was successfully funded. After a pretty much hassle-free production, the Velox has travelled to backers and buyers all over the world and is now pretty much sold out. So, it's time for the next step for Leyden: the Lorentz.
Who is Lorentz?
Hendrik Antoon Lorentz (1853 - 1928) was one of Holland's greatest Physicists. In 1902, he received the Nobel Prize in Physics for discovery of the so-called Zeeman effect. Lorentz also laid the fundamentals for Albert Einstein's principle of relativity.
Lorentz spent a big part of his life in Leiden as a professor at Leiden University.
Designing the watch
When designing the Lorentz, the goal was simple: create an elegant dress watch that is versatile enough to be worn in different settings. An elegant dress watch should have a clean design. The beauty of this watch should lie in small details. With this in mind, the Lorentz was born.
Probably the most important part of wristwatch, is the movement. For the Lorentz, it was an easy choice. The movement should be mechanical, of high quality, reliable and thin. This led to the Swiss Made Sellita SW 216-1 hand-wound movement. Mechanical, because there is nothing more beautiful than the mesmerising sweep of a seconds hand. Hand-wound, because it enables the case to remain thin. And, last but definitely not least; Swiss Made, because of the high quality and reliability.
In the Lorentz, you do not only get to enjoy the characteristics of a mechanical watch by wearing it. Once off the wrist, you have the ability to actually take see the (engraved) beating heart of the watch through the see-trough caseback.
- Power reserve: 42 hours
- Frequency: 28’800 A/h (4 Hz)
- Nr. of jewels: 24
Sellita is an independent Swiss company that specialised in assembling mechanical movements. Since 2003, they have started developing their own movements.
Case and crystal
One of the most striking features of the Lorentz is it's case. With a diameter of 39mm and a lug to lug measurement of just under 46mm, the watch sits comfortable and under the radar on any wrist.
The case has a mix of polished and brushed surfaces, which adds an extra touch of depth to the relatively simple case shape.
The crown is sized to precisely fit the case and has the Leyden logo etched on the side.
The watch sports a domed sapphire crystal. This means the glass is made of a scratch resistant material and has a slight curve to it: it's one of the details that can make a watch stand out. The bottom of the crystal has been treated with an anti-reflective coating.
The caliber SW 216-1 used in the Lorentz, features a small seconds complication. The small seconds subdial is a very traditional feature found on many vintage (wrist)watches. For more information, you can check out Watch Wiki.
The hour markers are raised to add depth to the dial and have a T-shaped C1 lume filling. The same lume is used on the hour and minutes hands.
The Lorentz comes on a vintage styled genuine leather strap with a luxury butterfly clasp. Both the clasp and the strap have been marked with the Leyden logo. The leather used is very soft and will feel even more comfortable after just a few days of wear.
The lug width is 20mm and the lugs are drilled, which means changing the strap is very easy and there is no risk of accidentally damaging the watch case doing so.
The Lorentz will initially be released in 3 founder's editions, limited to 50 pieces per colour and individually numbered!
Here are the 3 founder's editions:
Blue is definitely the most sporty version of the Lorentz. With a white sub dial and matching blue leather strap, this watch has a nautical vibe and pairs perfectly with a suit or a t-shirt.
The black dialed Lorentz is the best of both worlds. It's a classic looking watch with a playful light brown/cognac strap.
The white Lorentz is the most formal of the three. The watch face is clean and simple but, like the other styles, certainly has depth to it. You can enjoy the play of sunlight on the dial all day.
Stretchgoals will be determined based on your wishes. Do you have a good idea? Let me know, and I'll see if we can make it work.
Risks and challenges
As with every Kickstarter project, there are a few risks. The movement used in the Lorentz is very popular, so this might result in some delays. A slight production delay has been anticipated in the timeline, to avoid promising an unrealistic delivery date.
Over the last 18 months, I've proven to provide excellent customer service to all the backers and customers of the Velox. Furthermore, I've experience in handling the logistics of running a successful Kickstarter campaign.
During the proces of production and delivery, I'll keep everyone of you up to date via Kickstarter, e-mail and social media. As I know this is appreciated by the backers, it's very important to me.
