About this project
START YOUR ENGINES...
Racing-themed watches go back almost as far as auto racing itself, with designs as legendary as the events and tracks which lent them their names - Monaco, Daytona, LeMans, Carrera, Mille Miglia.
Taking their colors and design cues straight off the track, these watches evoke the speed, thrill and glamour of modern motorsport. But damn...they are expensive.
LEAVE IT ALL OUT ON THE TRACK...
The Legends racer takes its inspiration from those classic designs, and the competitive spirit of weekend racers, the ones who wrench on their own cars, in order to go fast and have fun racing with their friends, but without spending a fortune.
With its bold colors, racing stripes, curved "windshield" display crystal and rally strap, we injected all the fun of racing-themed watches into an affordable timepiece, accessible to everyone.
HE AIN'T RUSTY, HE'S MY BROTHER...
For over a year, fans of the brand have been bugging us to make a square-cased racing watch like the Tag Heuer Monaco. I had toyed with the idea for a while, but moved onto other things. My friend Rusty Mahony hadn't. Instead he spent some time doing some digital mock-ups...
He had combined the square case of the Monaco with the geometric dial pattern of another racing watch, the Tudor Heritage Chrono. When Rusty approached me with his early drawings, I begged him to be team Lew & Huey's new crew chief, and help me win the cup. Since then it's been "Outta my way!!!"...
WHERE WE ARE IN THIS RACE...
The Legends Prototypes were just completed. We made four color combinations - Blue/Red, Black/Orange, Blue/Orange and Black/Red.
However, for now we are planning to produce just three colors, Blue/Orange, Black/Orange, and Blue/Red (not the Black/Red), for a total of just 300 pieces, making this a true limited edition.
Project backers will choose their color after the project has ended, by claiming pledge rewards through the Lew & Huey website.
If we hit $75,000 in pledges, we will make all four color combos, a total of 400 pieces, and we will add a pledge reward of all four colors for $1250. If we hit $112,500 in pledges, we'll make 500 pieces.
Our plan is to start production in mid-December or early January, and deliver the Legends by May 2015.
ALL BACKERS - Please be sure to read our Pre-Order Policies on our website.
THIS THING ISN'T EXACTLY "STOCK"...
The Legends was designed as an "endurotimer". It has an automatic (self-winding) calibre 8217 movement from Miyota/Citizen with a 24-hr gauge at 9 o'clock.
The applied - not painted - hour indices and hands contain luminescent paint which glows a bright blue in the dark.
The hands are "pinstriped" to color-coordinate with the dial and stitching of the strap.
The case has vertical brushing on its face, sides and back, which resembles a wood-grain. The top and caseback both have a beveled edge which is polished.
The raised sapphire display crystal is arched from 9 to 3, just like a car's windshield, and gives a fantastic distortion when viewed at an angle, creating the illusion that the dial curves.
The leather strap is a rally-style, complete with signed butterfly deployant clasp and color-coordinated straps.
The Legends has a screw-down caseback with custom engraved design showing vintage race cars jockeying for position. The cars are numbered 12 and 6, echoing the dial design. Each caseback is etched with an individual Limited Edition number (numbers will be assigned randomly, we cannot accommodate requests for specific numbers).
The caseback was given a concave curve for comfort and a wrist-hugging fit.
Additionally, the Legends is water resistant to 100 meters/330 feet/10 ATM - so you can go out and race around in the rain and mud.
Movement: Miyota/Citizen cal. 8217, a hand-winding automatic movement with 21 jewels that beats 21,600 per hour, with 24 hour complication and a 40+ hour power reserve. PLEASE NOTE - THIS WATCH DOES NOT ACTUALLY BARK. THAT'S JUST ANIMATION IN THE VIDEO.
Case: Surgical-grade 316L stainless steel with curved and engraved screw-down caseback, engraved crown,100 meter/330 feet/10 ATM water resistance, and a combination wood-grain brushed and polished finish.
Display Crystal: Windshield-arched sapphire.
Dial: Four-color with applied geometric markers with blue luminescence.
Hands: Polished with blue luminescence and color-coordinated pinstripe.
Strap: 22mm-wide rally-style calfskin strap with signed butterfly deployant clasp and color-coordinated stitching.
Dimensions: 39mm x 39mm square* with 49mm lug-to-lug length (case height) and 12.5mm thickness.
*If a 39mm square sounds small, it isn't. The surface area is equivalent to a round case with a 44mm diameter. The Legends has a TON of "wrist-presence".
Possible Changes for Production:
1. We're looking into making the hands broader, and possibly changing their lume color to something more green-blue, in order to make them stand out from the hour markers
2. We're looking into making the hour markers thinner, but we will definitely give them a polished finish (the prototypes' markers are matte, which makes them look a little "plasticky").
3. We may also use a slightly different strap, but with a very similar style, and the same type of clasp.
This is how we originally conceived the lume on the hands and markers:
This is how the protos actually look currently:
WHY SHOULD YOU GET THIS WATCH?
Who are we kidding? That's like asking why you'd want a car with more horsepower. You know you want to be the first, possibly only kid in the neighborhood to have one of these, just like you wanted to be the first kid to jump your bike over Breakneck Canyon.
Your mom wouldn't let you be that awesome then, but she's not here now. If Evel Knievel was here, he'd say "go for it!"
Why else? Well, for starters, we know what we're doing. The Legends will be the SIXTH watch we've produced, and we've gotten better with each model.
We've built a track record - of success - here on Kickstarter, and always delivered for our many happy backers:
We always pull out all the stops when it comes to the little touches that make a design "POP", and the Legends is no different - windshield-arched display crystal, applied markers, color-coordinated hands and stiches, wood-grain brushing, custom caseback design, plutonium module...okay, there's no plutonium, but that's really the only thing that could possibly make the Legends more badass.
Lew & Huey started 2 years ago, with a quest to find an affordable watch that didn't suck. Since then we've just been churning out the hits - affordable, reliable and attractive watches with original designs - picking up a legion of happy customers and fans around the globe. Look no further than the comments pages of our previous Kickstarter projects, the reviews on our website, and the social media following we've built:
Together with our customers and fans, we're sticking it to the stuffy industry establishment, the "heritage" brands who want you to get a second mortgage on your house just to buy a watch. You want to do that? No? Welcome to team Lew & Huey!
PRODUCTION & DELIVERY SCHEDULE
Ordinarily we'd estimate at least 90 days from starting production to delivery, however, our production will be delayed because of holidays both here and abroad, particularly the lunar New Year. For this project we are estimating 120 days for production. However, if we are able to start production before the project ends, we will, and thus may be able to deliver the Legends sooner.
This project will finance production, and give our backers the opportunity to save by getting the Legends at pre-order prices. As with past projects we've done, we will use the the Lew & Huey website to fulfill project rewards. Project backers will be required to create a customer account on the website in order to claim their pledge rewards.
Risks and challenges
Any problem with any component will delay production. It happens, but with each model, we've learned to become more conservative in our delivery estimates, and better manage expectations.
We've calculated all our production costs as best we can considering we won't start for another month, including a recent price increase in movements. If we don't hit at least $30,000 in pledges, the Legends won't be made, and we'll refund all pre-orders.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
