Two new Fighters from different worlds enter EXCEED's arena!

 Hey everyone!

I had been showing EXCEED around quite a bit, and I got a copy into the hands of Aaron Brosman of Arcane Wonders. He loved the game, and immediately asked if we could put together a Mage Wars cross-promotion with EXCEED. Bryan Pope, the creator of Mage Wars, tried the game at Essen, and was sold on becoming a part of it. We hammered out the details, and now I'm ready to show you the results of our work!

Mage Wars is preparing their new game, Mage Wars: Academy, a more casual-friendly version of their core game, and it seemed like a great idea to put a Mage from Academy into EXCEED. So without further ado, here is Devris Valda, the Warlock from Academy set #2!

We're talking with Arcane Wonders about doing a full 4 or 8-fighter mini-season for EXCEED in the future. Until then, this will be a very limited chance to get this fighter as a project add-on.

One thing that's really neat about Devris are the new Mage-Wars themed Normal Attacks. These are the same as those in Red Horizon, but with the new card templates and the art from Mage Wars, they take on a rather different look, don't they? :D

If you're on twitter, facebook, or Board Game Geek, please thank our friends at @ArcaneWonders for their help in making EXCEED even more awesome! :D

Juno

Not to be outdone, I wanted to include one of our own future-series fighters into the mix, and so I've put together Juno from Esper X (pronounced "Esper-Cross"). She comes from a far-future world where humans use robotic servants called Espers to interface with nanotechnology.

I won't say too much about the story and such at this point, but it uses a pop-future art style inspired by games like Jet Grind Radio and Space Channel 5, with character designs and art by Karl Fan.

Like Devris, Juno comes with her own alternate set of Normals, using a brand new card layout!

Here's a look at all three of the card templates side-by-side!

Playmats

While you only need one playmat to play EXCEED, some players were asking about getting this playmat at lower tiers than the $100 level. So I've created an add-on for that as well. I'll be revisiting the playmat design a little bit more later, but this is a good idea of what it's generally going to look like.

Pledging for Add-ons

If you want any of these cool add-ons, just click on the 'Manage Your Pledge' link at the top of the project, and add the appropriate amount on top of your regular pledge amount. There is no extra shipping on these add-ons, even internationally. :D

After the project ends, you'll be able to let us know which add-ons you pledged for via the Kickstarter Survey!

I hope that you guys enjoy the new characters, and that they give a glimpse of what kind of shape EXCEED will take in the future as a multi-IP crossover series. For me personally, it's really neat to see the direction that the game can take as we approach future seasons and diversify the cast with fighters from other game worlds. It's going to be a lot of fun to see where things go with our upcoming licenses too! :D

I'll be finishing up that card editor program tonight, so that you can make your own fighters to challenge ours, so look out for it soon! I can't wait to see what you guys create!

In the meantime, please help me to spread the word about these new fighters, and let's see if we can push the project high enough to get that extra fighter, Skull Man, this week!

We're going to need everyone's help to make this project a big success in these final two weeks, so please tweet, reddit, blog, thumb, facebook, and post wherever you think people might be interested in EXCEED!

Thanks so much for your help in making EXCEED a success! :D

These seem really cool, but $12 per character -- when I'm already paying $100, and getting 16 characters, plus stretch goals -- is a really steep cost. I don't know if I can justify that.

No matter how much I squint, I can't make out the text on the cards! :(

Anyhow, I'll probably skip the entire season Juno is in, really not a fan of the art style / card design.

That's just because I made the Esper X cards a little earlier in development than the latest version. It'll be fixed for the final to be identical, but the word "and" has no significance or different effect there.

is the word and on Juno's spike card significant? It is worded differently than the other two spike cards?

    6. David B. Talton Jr. 16-time creator on October 19, 2015

@Kyle: I admit I didn't have plans to do it at the start, but the allure of doing the crossover with Mage Wars was too cool to pass up, and this was the only way we could make the costs balance out.

    7. David B. Talton Jr. 16-time creator on October 19, 2015

@Ferdinand: These will be done in a very limited short run, so they will probably be hard to find after the project ends.

We will plan to publish these characters in future sets, but I can tell you that they won't be coming out for a while, as we have other worlds scheduled already in the lineup.

I have to say I am disappointed that we're going to be squeezed with an add-on model. Please just make pledge levels that include everything. Especially at the upper levels, this kind of nonsense really gets under my skin.

@Brad Are these Add-on's exclusive to this Kickstarter, or will it be available to buy later after it has ended.

Great, thanks for the quick reply. Both characters have some really interesting mechanics. At the very least, I'll be picking up Devris for sure.

I love the card layout for Juno. It's bright, clean, simple and easy in the eyes. I blame Google's Material design for making me like simple deigns.

So cool! I can't wait to see more crossovers.

Just keep in mind that these characters are still subject to change before their final print dates.

@Mike: Yes, you would need to be pledging at the Dual Duel Decks tier first to select any add-ons.

For the sake of clarity, does "To any pledge $50 or higher" mean that backers at the Dual Duel Decks tier will qualify after upping adding the add-on cost or do these add-ons only apply to Complete and Ultimate tiers?

Also, can we get an idea of how each character plays or a higher resolution image of their cards? I'm sitting on the fence, and if they played differently enough from the decks I already plan on getting, I would certainly pick one or both of them up.

Oops. My bad. Go EXCEED! Go Juno!

On the other hand, I'm really liking these two crossover characters. It's definitely a 'taste' of what's to come with potential of EXCEED for me. Good stuff Brad *throws more money at computer screen*

Juno! I really like the idea of introducing future protagonists/characters in other games. It reminds me of Asagi from Nippon Ichi's RPG games (though she never got her game sadly...)

I know you resisted the add ons, but these seem to be well measured and manageable and might just be the kick start (pun intended) that the project needs. Great stuff
