BattleCON is a head-to-head dueling card game that captures the style of fighting video games like Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, Mortal Kombat, or BlazBlue--the only differences are that it plays on your kitchen table and you don't have to spend hours memorizing button combinations to become a competitive fighter.
BattleCON boils the mechanics of 2D fighting down to the essentials so that you can focus on strategies and outwitting your opponent.
BattleCON utilizes a system of connecting cards--every character is able to make basic punches, kicks, throws, and dodges. What makes each character unique are their styles. Even though we both have a heavy punch, your heavy punch will be vastly different than mine, and since each character has five styles and seven basic attacks to choose from, there's always an option available that will turn the battle in your favor!
BattleCON: War is the best place to start learning and playing BattleCON. With straightforward characters, an introductory rules comic, and a portable-sized box, it's got everything you need to play.
BattleCON is not collectible--there are no random packs and no rare cards. A few expansions open up new modes of play, like boss battles, enhanced Tag Team Mode, and character customization, but these are all secondary on top of the main game. Everything that you will need to play competitively in tournaments is included in the box.

Over 3 years, BattleCON has racked up tons of critical acclaim, becoming one of the top independent releases in Board Gaming, and one of the best-rated Kickstarter Games of all time.
Check out our BGG (BoardGameGeek.com) Ratings:
Most of the marks against the original BattleCON are cosmetic--art, graphic design, size and quality of tokens, etc. Our goal is to get the original game up to par with the quality and production of its sequel, Devastation (the highest average rated Kickstarted game of all time, among games with over 100 user ratings):
Here's some of what Reviewers have said about BattleCON: War since its first release:
“…this is absolutely lovely… I am seriously over the moon with this.” - Paco Garcia Jean, GMS Magazine
“I still feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface despite 53 plays… There are so many matchups, and each matchup has a great deal of subtlety to it.” – Scott Douglass, BGG Reviewer
“not only the best fighting game, not only one of the best games released in the past year or so but also one of the best games ever released” – Rick Teverbaugh, Herald Bulletin
BattleCON is more than just a game--players from all around the world come together to chat, discuss strategies, and do battle online. We have a diverse, active, and friendly community that supports the growth of the game and is always happy to give a hand to new players learning the ropes.
We're working on direct online play at www.battleconnection.com, but in the meantime, there's plenty of ways to get involved and meet the community either on the Board Game Geek Forums, or on our own BattleCON Online site.
BattleCON is part of a growing, diverse fantasy world called Indines. The characters from this world appear in many different games, such as Disc Duelers, Seven Card Slugfest, Pixel Tactics, and Argent. BattleCON was the first game in the World of Indines series, and is considered by many to be the core game that ties the whole world together.
War is intended as an introduction to BattleCON. The characters, play modes, and options available are geared towards a more straightforward experience designed to invite new players and expand the game for veterans.
War: Extended Edition (Expansion Pack)
Extended Edition is a small expansion that contains more possibilities for players to explore. Many special rewards and much of the Stretch Goal content we create will also go into Extended Edition!
- Alternate costumes with new Unique Abilities for the cast of War
- 2 sets of Beta Bases (an alternate set of fighting styles)
- 13 more Arena Cards
- 15 Strikers (call-in allies who join you mid-battle)
- 6 Additional Players' Choice Fighters that will be voted on by all backers (candidate list coming soon!)
Strikers extends the Tag Team Mode in BattleCON, and expands both War and the sequel, Devastation, with a several new ways to play.
Light & Shadow extends the 2v1 and 3v1 Modes in BattleCON, and gives you nicer components and more options for these modes and for higher-powered duels.
Armory extends the Customized Character Modes in BattleCON, and lets you build a custom fighter using equipment, allies, and accessories.
You can add these to any pledge for $15 each (or $12 for Strikers).
Promo packs contain exciting bonus characters. One promo pack of your choice is included in your pledge for every $15 you pledge (including any add-ons or international shipping that you pledge for)!
Promo character packs will never be tournament legal, so you don't need to collect them for serious competition, but they are a lot of fun to challenge your friends with!
Currently, we have...
- Lucius (an original character by artist Nokomento)
- Takeshi Kamikaze (an original character by artist Fábio Fontes)
- Iskra Brimstone & Raederick Blackforge (the upcoming Warlock and Warlord from Mage Wars)
- Prince Elien (from the upcoming Alliances Master Set from Summoner Wars)
- Vincent Grey& Nehtali (Vincent is the Evil President of the USA, and Nehtali is a demon pulling the strings in a war between heaven and hell, both from the Universal Fighting System)
- Bruce Lee (who needs no introduction, and will soon be appearing in Dragon Tides)
- Eliza (the mascot of Level 99 Games)
If you don't get every promo pack here, don't worry–we'll have more available in tournament kits, at conventions, as free giveaways through retailers, and as free gifts through our online store. We do not sell promotional characters, but they will be available to those who seek them out.
You will get to choose which promos you want at the end of the project, and you will get one of your choice for every $15 pledged (in addition to all other items).
So if you pledge $70 for FIGHTER PLUS, you'll get all of the items in that tier AND 4 promo fighters of your choice. You'll get to select which ones you want in the survey at the end of the project :)
About 3 years and one month ago, the first BattleCON Kickstarter was a success, and we raised $15,000 to produce what would become one of the definitive 2-player dueling games. After stumbling through the process of learning to make games on the original BattleCON: War, we brought the sequel, BattleCON: Devastation to Kickstarter and raised $150,000 to print it and 4 additional games.
Now, we're excited to bring the same level of professional treatment that we brought to Devastation to the table with the new revised edition of BattleCON: War.
The first printing of BattleCON: War sold out from our distributors last August, and now only a few copies remain sitting in our warehouse. We had been hoping to reprint the game for some time, but the money to do a new run (a little over $30,000) couldn't be set aside, due to other projects and commitments. Since the situation doesn't seem to be improving, and players have been demanding the reprint for a while, we've decided to bring the new edition directly to you.
We've added things to many of the tiers through our stretch goals, but Kickstarter doesn't let us change the text of the pledge levels, so those may be out of date. The chart below shows the complete contents of each tier, so take the word of this chart over the pledge level text.
To add-on something to your pledge, just pledge a fixed amount over your base pledge tier. You'll be able to tell us at the end of the project which add-on items you want us to send you together with your pledge.
We love our Stretch Goals! Most of our goals will add more content to Extended Edition, but a few will create new games or give everyone free gifts!
Click the image to read more detailed descriptions of each goal and what it adds to the game!
Below are a few of our stretch goals that have been revealed so far. There are plenty more in between, but these are some upcoming highlights...
$150,000 (CLEARED!) - Special Edition of NOIR Free for all Backers - One of our most popular games is our Deductive Mystery Game, NOIR. We want to print a special edition of this game featuring the art and characters from BattleCON, and give it for free to all backers who have pledged for the new edition of War or the Extended Edition (and if you pledged for a virtual tier, you will get a print and play edition of it!)!
$190,000 - Free Companion App - This free BattleCON companion app will track your life, randomize matches, and provide a chess-clock like decision timer (it's actually more of a simultaneous decision clock, like Hearthstone uses). It will also have access to BattleCON online, so you can record your matches directly into the system and add friends you meet in real life, plus a built-in game board so that you can just carry your four or five favorite characters in your pocket and play anywhere.
$200,000 - World of Indines Visual Novel/Adventure Game - I've always dreamed of writing an epic, far-spanning adventure game set in the world of Indines, where players could experience the world and the story in an interactive context. This stretch goal supports the writing and art of this game. The game will be inspired after the writing style of famous classic games like Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, and such--strong central narrative with the opportunity to explore various characters' subplots through sidequests. This goal also helps to expand the lore of the world, leading us towards more games in the World of Indines, like roleplaying games and such.
$225k - Designer's Choice Character - I can't really add more Backers' Choices, due to playtesting time limitations, but I don't think it will be too difficult to offer one more character of my own choice, since I can guarantee a selection that's reasonable to balance in the time given. I'll make my pick last, after the backers' have voted on their favorites.
$250k - Physical Promo of Anath - Everyone was asking for a physical copy of their favorite secret boss character, so why not? Anath will become a TENTH promo fighter. Additionally, everyone will get +1 promo of choice on their pledges, so nobody has to raise their pledge to grab this extra promo (so Fighter Tiers who were normally getting 3 promos for $45 will get 4 promos instead, the 3 normal ones, plus the free one from this stretch goal).
$275k - Claus & Wyndhal Reprint and Promo - Claus and Wyndhal were a promo fighter (they fought as a team, like Karin and Jager) that was part of the original BattleCON kickstarter (the one promo of those 3 we owned). With this goal, we'll update and rebalance these two, and make them an extra promo, using the same system as above (everyone getting promos will get another +1 promo choice, stacking with the $250 goal).
$300k - Collector's Edition Box - This is another one that people have been asking for! With this goal, we'll print a giant BattleCON box, complete with small tuckboxes for each of the ~60 fighters in BattleCON, so that you can organize your collection into one awesome place. There will also be space for all of the variants, arenas, and extras we love :D

Fábio Fontes is the concept artist for BattleCON (he designs the costumes) and also created the Alternate Art Edition of the game and the chibi (caricature) characters. Ana Garcia is the coloring assistant for the concepts and Alternate Art Edition, as well the chibi arts that appear in the game.
Chad Hantak is the lead programmer for Level 99 Games, and handles the development of BattleCON: Online.
Risks and challenges
Even though we've done this before, there are always risks and challenges associated with the production and distribution of physical goods. We've been in the business of making games for 3 years now, and even when things go wrong, we've always managed to overcome and deliver the project in the end.
Deadlines are always our biggest challenge, but this time we have the art and graphic design finished in advance. All we have to do is pay the printer and do the press proofing, and then things will start coming in the mail. With a generous deadline of December, we feel confident that your games will be shipped in time for the Christmas holiday.
Thanks so much to everyone who has put your trust and support behind us! You make everything we do possible! :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
