In PROTO, you are leading a new creative project, competing with other players to build the best business.
Using the cards as inspiration, players come up with ideas for a business and pitch how they want to use each card to attract more users.
PROTO is a card game about the business of dreams. Whether it's a new project inside your company or an entirely new start-up, we wanted to create a way to feel the excitement of the creative process in just 1 hour.
Transform Uncertainty into Serendipity
While most people fear innovation because of the uncertainty, PROTO gamifies the chaos of the creative process: the randomness of the cards, the roll of the dice, and the surprise attacks from other players. This much is out of your hands, but what is always within your control are your skills:
- and creativity.
The game provides a safe yet challenging opportunity to practice building an idea into a business, pitching to others, and imagining possibilities from any situation. Through PROTO, players cultivate the skills of innovation.
How to play PROTO
From randomly drawn cards, players come up with ideas to pitch, and get feedback in the form of dice rolls. So the more others like their ideas, the more rolls they get.
Based on this feedback, players move along the "Impact Line" to see how many users they're influencing.
Players can also attack each other with challenges, as well as strategically plan the innovation cards they use.
The winner is the first player to complete the 5 stages of the Impact line!
- Local start-up
- Small biz
- National business
- World-class brand
Countless Practical Applications
Throughout the development process, our testers suggested many different scenarios for where they wanted to use PROTO:
- client consulting meetings,
- MBA case-study analysis,
- business model development,
- client-pitch brainstorming,
- team-building events,
- pitch competitions,
- a way to match start-up co-founders,
- strategy road-mapping,
- a tool to funding applications
- and more!

A Very Special Game
Social Innovation - We intentionally included seniors, immigrants and females (amongst others) into our USER cards so to gently nudge players to develop for under-served communities.
Accessible Innovation - The simple, clear explanations of new technologies allow tech newbies to understand and engage with innovation
Attack or Aid? - As players can both attack and give feedback to each other, the path to success isn't defined and through playing PROTO, players discover their own strategy (hint: it's good to be a nice guy).
Business is Beautiful - Every single card has its own unique infographic that simply illustrates complex ideas into beautiful minimal geometric forms.
- Complete Creativity - PROTO cards are simply the building blocks designed to inspire your imagination. Build any business you dream!
Plainly put, PROTO is a conversation starter. We know it will inspire you to start talking about your dreams, start getting feedback, and eventually start changing lives through innovation.
How was PROTO created?
We've actually been detailing our progress for many months now and have captured those details into a blog on our main website:
UPDATE: May 21st
In this video below, we share never before seen early drafts of the designs, explain a bit more about how the images were conceptualized, and actually animate the graphics to further bring the concepts to life!
About the Creators
PROTO was co-developed by the creative community in Shanghai, China. From challenge to concept, prototype to polishing, and mechanics to aesthetics, every detail was informed by the community through hundreds of iterations. This process was led by Let's Make Great! an independent consultancy, founded by 3x TEDx speaker, Brian Tam, which offers creative workshops, innovation consulting and other organizational growth services.
After nearly 2 years of development, we're excited to finally share PROTO with the Kickstarter community!
Risks and challenges
While this is our first Kickstarter project, Let's Make Great! has been around since 2013, serving dozens of corporate clients. Earlier this year, we helped to design and deliver 1000+ sets of another card game for a client, so we're aware of the timelines needed to complete this one.
We're nearly complete with our 100+ infographic visualizations, have to do another round of spell-checking and then its off to the printers!
We've talked to many printers and are in the process of getting quality samples. Other than the printing, we are still sourcing the last few things: sand-timers, dice, and packaging but being based in Shanghai, China we're in a really good position to talk to many manufacturers.
We're almost there and really need your final push. Please consider backing PROTO :)
