Coming out can be scary, so don’t just come out, POP OUT!
Let Me Out celebrates the journey of coming out, with the story following our main character who confronts those internal fears that manifest inside the closet, before finding self-acceptance and embracing their truth.
Everyone has their own story to tell. For me, coming out was a struggle that I now embrace wholeheartedly as an out and proud gay creative. I want Let Me Out to be a resource for children and adults alike, helping us embrace all the doubts, fears, and anxieties that we hide behind closet doors.
It is time to pop-out of that closet and embrace who we are meant to be, because being different is what makes you unique.
What to expect with Let Me Out
Coming out is, well… scary, and we wanted Let Me Out’s artwork to acknowledge that. We also want to pay homage to our favourite gay icon – the BABADOOK, a horror movie character who was hilariously adopted by the LGBTQ+ community in 2017.
We promise Let Me Out is not all scary – the book quickly goes from creepy to KIKI once those closet doors are opened, and that’s when the pop-out party begins!
Let Me Out is a celebration of embracing your truth, and anyone can take that message away from this book - regardless of who you are or who you love.
Why a Pop Up?
Coming out isn’t one dimensional, so our book isn’t either. In today’s political and social climate, it’s our duty to resist, stand out and be heard- and what better way to cultivate confidence than with positive messaging that physically leaps from the pages of Let Me Out.
What exactly is hiding inside that closet? Well, you will have to purchase Let Me Out to find out, but trust us – this reveal will leave you GAGGING!
The perfect resource to celebrate You Being You!
Whether you want to remember what coming out meant to you, or share our book with someone who’s struggling with their own journey, Let Me Out is an LGBTQ+ positive resource in a world where such resources are few and far between.
We’re hoping to schedule our first run of prints to coincide with National Coming Out Day in October, so let us come out of our closet and directly into your esteemed book collection!
Risks and challenges
Although we’ve developed all the content and illustrations for Let Me Out, we really want to make sure that you get the pop out experience you deserve.
For our story to truly leap from the pages of Let Me Out, we will be working with a paper engineer to push the concept as far as possible. We also aim to work alongside a manufacturer to develop our first run of prints. It is these items that require the resources we hope you can help out with.
Our goal is to donate a portion of the first run of prints for Let Me Out to youth organizations and libraries in need of LGBTQ+ focused books. We have been so fortunate to receive support from many in our community and ultimately, we want to give back to our community and specifically, the resource centres who have been outspoken about their need to carry this book.
That is why for every 10 copies of Let Me Out sold, we will be donating a copy of Let Me Out to an LGBTQ+ positive youth organization or library.
We would also love to hear from you if you know any LGBTQ+ positive libraries, resource centres, school associations or organizations who would appreciate receiving a copy of Let Me Out. We want to spread the love as much as possible, so send us your donation recommendations and we can come straight from our closet and onto the shelves of those who need Let Me Out the most!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
