Bold and brash, when superpowered heroes first meet, they tend to brawl. This game embodies that battle. Players each select five dice for their hero. Then they roll to see who is attacking, and who is defending. A successful attack takes away opponents’ dice. A successful defense may seize the initiative and become the new attacker! Any hero reduced to two dice is knocked out of the game. The last hero standing wins!
The SuperPower SmackDown! game involves five different heroes:
- A Strength hero hits hard. The Strength (fist) icon does double damage.
- A Speed hero moves fast. The Speed (boot) icon wins ties.
- A Mutant hero is resilient. The Mutant (DNA) icon counts zero matches as total matches.
- A Mind hero uses attackers' own abilities against them. The Mind (eye) icon counts attack symbols for defense.
- A Gear hero relies on equipment. The Gear (gears) icon takes no penalty for pushing luck.
Each hero in the SuperPower SmackDown! game consists of five unique dice.
- All five are identified by the hero's own icon on two faces.
- One (the Wild Die) also has two Bystander icons and two Bust icons.
- Four dice each have one Bystander and three random power icons.
With five different heroes, that's twenty-five unique dice!
Each game contains a set of rules printed on playing cards for portability. With a cover card and just five 2.5"x3.5" pages of rules (including examples of play), that's a simple three cards. (You can find a pre-print PDF here.)
For this Kickstarter, we're producing a one-time-only set of engraved ivory-colored dice with black ink, similar to those pictured above.
Economies of scale make dice production cheaper as we order more, so the higher our funding, the more dice each pledge will receive!
- At our $25,000 goal, each HERO backer will receive 10 dice! (That's 2 random heroes.)
- At $65,000, that same pledge will receive 15 dice! (That's 3 random heroes.)
- At $125,000, that same pledge will receive all 25 dice! (That's all 5 heroes!)
To allow for that flexible set of rewards, and to keep postage costs low, the dice and rule cards will be shipped to HERO backers in a resealable plastic bag.
SUPER SUPPORTER backers will receive a specially embroidered dice bag, with additional bonuses at these different goals, as explained in that rewards description.
The SuperPower SmackDown! game was created by Lester Smith, designer of Dragon Dice, Daemon Dice (originally Chaos Progenitus), and scores of other published products. He has run many successful Kickstarter projects--including the D6xD6 RPG (now a platinum best-seller on DriveThruRPG.com). You can learn more about his projects at www.LesterSmith.com and www.PopcornPress.com.
Cliff Wiggs of SFR, Inc. (publishers of the Dragon Dice and Daemon Dice games) played a major role in development of the SuperPower SmackDown! rules. Dale Donovan (known for his Dragon magazine and Marvel Superheroes RPG work) and Chris Reed (D6xD6 RPG Project Evangelist) also played important roles in its development. The dice icons were designed by Jim Rayborn, who has also done many of the Dragon Dice icons for SFR, Inc. Graphic design is by K8 Smith of Popcorn Press.
Dice production will be done by Q-Workshop (www.q-workshop.com), which manufactures dice for Pathfinder, Call of Cthulhu, Deadlands, Numenara, Shadowrun, and many other games. Rule cards will be printed by DriveThruCards (www.drivethrucards.com). Sales will be handled by Popcorn Press (www.popcornpress.com).
Want more dice? Want to add heroes? At project's end we'll add that option, once we learn how low a price we can set for it, based on economies of scale. As you can see from the pledge levels, we want to give you the most bang for your buck. Popcorn Press stakes its reputation, and its future, on customer satisfaction.
Risks and challenges
DICE PRODUCTION: This will be our first time working with Q-Workshop. But they have a great reputation, and we have previous experience with other dice manufacturers on other projects. We've built in extra lead time for communication between our offices in the US and theirs in Eastern Europe.
SHIPPING: This will be our biggest Kickstarter to date, with thousands of packages to be shipped. But we do have experience dealing with worldwide shipping. And again, we've built in some extra lead time to allow for the extra work.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
