If you missed the Kickstarter . . .
- Shooting for Seven! We're double funded! 200% (Thanks!) Now we're aiming for a $7k Stretch Goal. At that point you'll get individual character illustrations for Jokers, Kings, Queens, and Jacks, plus a separate illo for each suit of number cards--and a unique Kickstarter-only cover illo! So please spread the link: www.clashingblades.com.
- We've Got Your Back! We've committed to publishing all three deck back colors. (See below.) At campaign's end you can choose among them. Pledge for more than one deck, and we'll ship whatever mix you like!
- Suit Illustrations Locked! We've committed to printing full-color suit faces. See the illustrations further down this page.
- International Shipping! Though the pledge levels say "Ships within the US only," we can ship to most overseas locations. (See the FAQ at the bottom of this page.)
What's It About?
The Clashing Blades! game is a result of college fencing classes and a love of swashbuckling movies and anime. It distills that thrust-and-parry action into a competition using poker cards. The game is relatively easy to learn (get a PDF of the rule cards here, and watch the video demo below), but there's a surprising amount of strategy involved. No two opponents play exactly alike.
The cards will be printed in the USA and sold through DriveThruCards.com. We've published six other game decks and a booster pack with that company, so we know their quality is good.
Unlike most games there, however, our decks come with rules cards included. No need to download a separate PDF. And for this Kickstarter project, we're packing each deck in a free, stackable, clear plastic deckbox.
Why This Kickstarter?
Popcorn Press has already paid for the card-back illustration. (We'd love to know which version you prefer.) And we've already commissioned special sword-fighting pips for the four suits. So we're committed to publishing the game regardless of how well this Kickstarter project does.
But we'd love to go beyond those pips to lavishly illustrate the card faces. As the Stretch Goals below reveal, we're aiming for a unique illustration for the number cards in each suit, plus unique jacks, queens, kings, and jokers. So the more Stretch Goals we meet, the more beautiful your decks will be.
This is also a good time to mention that your decks will say "Kickstarter Version!" on the cover card, marking you as a hero who backed the game before it became commercially available.
About the Publisher
Popcorn Press is a small publisher that has been around since 2006. We started out publishing books and ebooks. September 2012 saw our first card-game project: Invasion of the Saucer People! , here on Kickstarter. Since then we've published Wolf Man's Curse, Monster Con, Return of Monster Con, Son of Monster Con, and the Monster Con: Cthulhu Pack. We have many more game projects planned for the future. (You might also like our annual Halloween book project, including last year's Cthulhu Haiku, which was launched here on Kickstarter.)
About the Designer
Lester Smith is an Origins-award-winning game designer of Dragon Dice, as well as of the long-running Dark Conspiracy role-playing game, among other things. You can learn more about him at www.lestersmith.com.
About the Artist
Ray Corwell II is a relative newcomer to hobby-game illustration, but his skill and talent are amazing. You can view more of his work and contact him at ronindude.deviantart.com.

Risks and challenges
As mentioned above, we've been through the process with six decks and a booster before. So we're pretty used to getting a deck into publication.
The only risk is that sometimes the proofing process takes longer than expected, meaning shipment is delayed. For this project, we've built in a solid month of buffer by setting a December date. It's likely that we'll actually ship in late October or early November.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
