My name is Leslie Odom, Jr. Most everyone who will visit this page will be someone that I know. We've known one another for a short time, a very long time, or forever. I've asked you here because I am embarking on the next chapter personally and professionally. It has already been encouraged by so many of you for so long...my debut album.
Some of us text each other every so often to say hello. Or you reach out on Facebook or on Twitter when you see me on TV or in a movie--especially when you don't expect it. You tell me how proud you are (Thank you.) You congratulate me for achieving some of the things I may have dreamed about when we were growing up. Maybe we've never met in person but you've still been thoughtful enough to send feedback about the work after you watch. Some of you consistently write a kind word after I post wedding pictures, a career milestone, or candids from the set. Some of you don't reach out at all but you still follow along. I appreciate you too.
I get that it's just a computer connection but it keeps us closer in ways that we might not be if we had to call all 2000 of our friends once a month. I value that. I love hitting the "like" button under the picture of your newborn or your engagement ring. It's a blessing for me to hear about your triumphs in business, love, and spiritual awakening. You're also good for a laugh. I am really grateful for the relationships that we've been able to maintain. It is my privilege to be a part of your community. You hold so much of the history of who I am. Thank you for your support over the last lifetime. I am ready to make some art about it.
This page is to raise the money for the recording, mixing, mastering, and printing of my debut album--a project that is being released independently in the Fall of 2013. Your investment ensures that "independent" does not translate into any lack in quality. I have aligned myself with some of the brightest and most talented young producers, writers, and other creatives in the business who are going to see to it that your $30,000 dollars sounds like a million.
Imagine the album that Nat King Cole or Sammy Davis, Jr. might make today.
There isn't really a black male Traditional Pop vocalist visible enough on the contemporary music scene for me to draw a comparison to. That is where I come in...Our sound will be lush, full, and emotional. We want strings where appropriate, a horn section when needed, and we won't be afraid to strip everything down to percussion, piano and voice on a track if we find it most affective.
I've waited my entire life for this moment and I am ready to put all of my heart, and hurt, and love, and disappointment, and joy, and great joy on this record for all of you to see and hear and experience. We're deconstructing songs and building arrangements right now. It is so exciting! Traditional Pop Vocal albums open the door for brand new arrangements of some of the greatest songs ever written and even original tunes, written by or for the artist, arranged in ways that fit the sound of the project. I hope you will support it. I hope you'll ask your friends and family to support it. I hope it will touch you. Maybe encourage you to stop waiting and get started on that thing that you'd like to create most.
I hope you'll listen at the gym. Maybe one of the songs will lull your baby to sleep. Maybe you'll find on it the perfect song to underscore a private moment or an independent project of your own...or even just the perfect song for the drive home...
I want to inspire you. I want to inspire myself. Please give what you can. Please spread the word.
We will not let you down. ~Odom, Jr.
Risks and challenges
Potential obstacles to a Fall 2013 release include Leslie being booked to a major show contract during the recording process. If this happens, we will still release the album as soon as possible, however it may be a few months behind schedule.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
