About the Project

QUEERPOWER is the Leslie-Lohman Museum’s annual public art installation celebrating queer artists working at the intersection of arts and social justice. Using the Museum’s façade as a platform for public dialogue, artists have the opportunity to create a public work of art that addresses issues affecting the LGBTQ community in New York and beyond. The installation covers the windows of the Museum and is seen by over 300,000 pedestrians a year, and thousands more online. In 2017, the SILENCE=DEATH Collective, creators of the iconic poster used by Act Up during the AIDS Pandemic in 1980s, created the inaugural installation. This year, the Museum is giving the wall to fierce pussy, the legendary queer collective whose work is rooted in celebrating lesbian culture and elevating persistent barriers and queer issues. With your help, we can make this project a reality for all New York City to enjoy!

Why is this project important?

Every summer, we invite a selected artist(s) to transform the Museum’s façade creating a visual message addressing contemporary civil rights issues faced the LGBTQ community, and they are honored at the Museum’s summer benefit, Live Loud Now. This summer, guests will gather at the Leslie-Lohman Museum on Wednesday, June 6, from 6-9 pm, to celebrate the work and legacy of fierce pussy, the all-female artists/activist collective that brought visibility to lesbian issues at the height of the AIDS pandemic in the 1990s. The collective will recreate their original work addressing lesbian identity and visibility with their signature low-tech guerrilla aesthetic wheat pasting posters and transform it into a message that is relevant today. The work will be on view for almost a year!

About fierce pussy

fierce pussy is a collective of queer women artists that formed in New York City back in 1991. The collective was deeply invested in AIDS activism during a decade of increasing political visibility and mobilization of gay rights. Through their work, fierce pussy brought lesbian identity and visibility directly into the streets of Manhattan. Working low-tech and low budget, the collective responded to the urgency of the AIDS epidemic using any and all readily available resources: old typewriters, found photographs, their own baby pictures, and the printing supplies and equipment accessible in their day jobs. One of fierce pussy's more well-known projects was the use of wheat-pasted posters and crack-and-peel stickers that were interspersed throughout New York City.

About the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art

Created to preserve LGBTQ identity and build community, the Leslie-Lohman Museum aspires to reclaim scholarship from a queer perspective, provide a training ground for queer artists and cultural workers to examine the connection between art and social justice in ways that provoke discussion, while acting as a cultural hub for LGBTQ individuals and their communities. We promote and support artists that speak to the LGBTQ experience and provide space for underrepresented LGBTQ artists.
