SO WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT? 🤷♂️
Birthday Boy will be a short film about a Transgender teenage boy named Alex.
He chooses to celebrate his 16th Birthday with digital friends within an online game. It's there where he feels that he can be his true self.
Although he has come out as Trans to his family, who embrace him, he still attends an all girls school that they have invested their savings into.
At the school Alex is severely bullied. On the day of his birthday things take a turn for the worse.
He ultimately overcomes this and finds acceptance in an uplifting narrative that positively portrays a Trans character.
It’s very rare to see a story that showcases a female to male character. Or one that doesn't just focus on their transition.
We hope to shed some light on the universal theme of bullying which affects so many young people.
Gaming has become very popular in our culture and is a way to escape for many. This aspect of the film also allows us to create some extremely exciting visuals.
The character is inspired by someone very close to one of our writers, James Bell, and is written from experience with a great respect.
As an LGBTQ+ team we feel that we can responsibly tell an authentic story that creates a positive, educational impact!

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? 🙋
For too long Transgender people have been portrayed as Serial Killers, Sex Offenders, Predators - so many negative associations that are just not true. The story of Birthday Boy doesn’t rely on stereotypes or solely focus on a Trans character’s transition. It’s a snapshot into a normal teenager’s life who just happens to be Trans.
There are few positive films about Transgender people and even less about Transgender men. As an LGBTQ+ team we all understand the importance of true representation. For this reason we will also be casting a Trans actor to play the role of Alex.
This is not only a film about Trans people but also about the bullying that Teenagers are experiencing in schools.
Research continues to uncover the devastating and very real impacts that bullying has on young people. 60% told the charity Ditch The Label that it had seriously impacted their mental health, with 1-in-2 telling them it made them feel depressed and 11% attempting to take their own lives as a result.
This is an extremely relevant story that brings more awareness to various issues young people are experiencing. By joining us on our campaign you will become a part of making a positive impact on many young lives.
AND WHY KICKSTARTER?👨💻
We are honoured to have been selected over many other brilliant projects to represent The NFTS Platform! x KickStarter. It's an initiative to help young filmmakers like ourselves to create ambitious short films. The National Film and Television School is one of "The Top Film Schools In The World" (Hollywood Reporter) and will support our film each step of the way, we just need to raise the money!
We see this Kickstarter as an opportunity to start a discussion on the important topics surrounding our film, a fantastic way to collaborate with you the audience, and a chance to create some unique fun rewards!
OKAY, SO WHO'S INVOLVED?🕵️♀️
BBC LGBT Correspondent Ben Hunte has joined us to film our casting process (something we are currently working on)!
WHO ELSE? 💁♂️
We saw this platform as unique opportunity to raise further awareness! We reached out to five Transgender people to join us as Ambassadors for Birthday Boy. They shared with us their own experiences on growing up as Transgender.

SO... WHERE IS MY MONEY GOING? 💰
Your money goes towards helping us to tell an important story. We have tried very hard to keep the costs down, however we still need to raise the amount of £12,500. All of this goes towards :
- Lighting and Camera equipment
- Production design
- Cast members
- Kickstarter fees (10%)
- Other production necessities
The NFTS will offer support to us in terms of equipment and facilities but we need these funds to truly bring Birthday Boy to life.
WHAT DO I GET OUT OF IT? 🎁
Let's face it, people work hard for their money! We are excited to have you on board and have tried to give you some great rewards for joining our story!
We have collaborated with Queer Graphic Designer Xavier Segers. As well as the logo for the film Xavier has also designed a range of Merchandise exclusive to our Kickstarter. Each design reflects a moment in the film, the overall uplifting vibe and the sassy, witty personality of our Birthday Boy Alex!

Risks and challenges
A lot of us are full-time students and this project is outside our curriculum. For this reason, we have worked out a shooting schedule that doesn’t clash with any of our university commitments. We are very excited and 100% committed to making this film happen!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
