TenState is a comic book series about a fictional TV reality show called "The Ten" that goes terribly wrong. It will be told in ten separate 10 page black and white installments. We are asking for money to fund the first three issues of the series. If we make the initial goal, we will add stretch goals for five issues and finally, the whole 10 issue season. Tom and I have sketched out a basic story arc for season one, but we have fleshed this out to at least four seasons. We are treating this comic as an episodic television series in the vein of Lost, The X-Files and The Walking Dead, but with the bite-sized presentation of a webseries.
We have completed a teaser issue of the story to give you an example of what Tom and I are going for. Go ahead and download it and read it for yourself:
We are looking to fund the first season of content. Our hope is to release the digital issues of TenState as they are completed. Back us, and you'll get the first three issues as downloadable PDFs or as an actual hardcopy physical 35 page comic book. If we meet our initial goals, we would love to be able to create the whole season of TenState - 10 issues total- comprising a FULL SEASON of content. So the best case scenario will be a full-size graphic novel with over 100+ pages of content!
Now, putting together a full comic book is A LOT of work, especially since I am doing all the pencils, inks and layout for each issue. For the past year, I've been working diligently on the Bill Corbett (Rifftrax/MST3K) written graphic novel "Super Powered Revenge Christmas" and I've learned the ropes about what it takes to design a great book. It's a daunting task and we need your help to make this happen. Tom and I are thrilled to be able to work on this project together, and we feel we have a really great story to tell, but we don't want this project to get lost into the "to-do" pile.
A LITTLE BACKSTORY:
After the November election, I was sitting in my car, listening to the news reports and looking at the landscape of the country and realizing just how divided we are. The chasm between us seems to widen overtime and I found it all rather unsettling. I started thinking about what it would be like if our differences were really put to the test, if we were all forced to work together and it was made mandatory to cooperate. I thought that perhaps there was a story in there somewhere, but I'm not nearly adept as a writer to figure it out or to make it happen.
So, that's about as far as it got for me.
That's when I called my friend Tom Merritt. Tom and I have been wanting to work on a project with one another for awhile. But we never really got one going because of our schedules.
I called Tom on a Sunday afternoon with the basic premise I had in my head and within an hour, Tom had a basic structure laid out. What if these diverse elements of our current society were forced to work together in a reality show format? What if these people were furthermore fighting some other unseen, all-knowing forces? And what if they were utterly alone?
That's how TenState was born.
In order to meet our goal, we've created a lot of really cool backer rewards for this project which includes exclusive sneak previews, of the comic as it's being made, variant covers, original art and of course your chance to be added to the TenState mythology, either as an ancillary character or just a mention on a poster or plot point. There's even an opportunity to be listed as an EXECUTIVE PRODUCER of the project, if you're willing to back us at the $10K level. Phew!
Another great reward we are hoping to offer is a variant cover version of the book painted by the ultra-talented comic artist Dave DeVries. Dave has been a friend for a while now and he was the first person I thought of when I thought variant cover versions. We met though his project The Monster Engine and I've always admired Dave's visceral, engaging style. He's been a cover artist for Marvel and DC and he has also worked on various video game projects, comics and trading cards. We're so excited to have Dave on board. Check out some of his work here:
We are also offering 8.5 x 11sized prints of the original TenState concept art that I created for the project. These were the very first drawings I ever did for the project and they include my scrawled notes to Tom. Take a look:
Still not convinced? Here are just a few words about our teaser issue:
ADVANCE PRAISE FOR TENSTATE:
"I seriously love it." - CJ Harrison
"GREAT premise! Super art, well-paced...left me wanting to read an entire graphic novel! I WANT MORE! NOW!" - John Kovalic, Dork Tower
"TenState is really compelling.... I look forward to reading more." Storm DiCostanzo, Paul and Storm
Obviously, Tom and I are extremely jazzed to be able to tell this story and I am personally excited to create this amazing new world and mythology for these characters. Please consider backing us so we can bring this comic series to life.
Thank you for your support!
Risks and challenges
Both Tom and I have been involved with several different successful Kickstarters. I personally have run and fulfilled three of my own. I've learned a lot of fulfillment and promises and I know how important it is to stay on top of all of it. The printer I have chosen for this project is stateside and someone I trust. It may cost a bit more, but I know their quality and I can trust the phsical rewards will look stunning.
Last year, I was involved with a very successful comic-based Kickstarter with Rifftrax/MST3K's Bill Corbett titled "Super Powered Revenge Christmas". I've learned a lot about creating a traditional comic book by fulfilling that project (I am currently working on completing that graphic novel.) Working on Bill's project has taught me that I love working on comics and I'm anxious to work on more.
I have shared my knowledge with Tom on creating a comic and I feel confident that he and I could shepard this through successfully.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
