Post-project update #1

Hey again you guys!!!

Well, I took all of your advice and I got some good rest Wednesday and Thursday.  So now that I'm well rested, what do I do?  I'm back at the office at 1:25am catching up on the 302 unread emails from the past 2 days.  Ugh.  LOL

Anyway, I promised you guys I'd keep posting here so I'm doing my best.  I'm literally having to pry my eyes open while I write this since I'm pretty exhausted but I told you I'd do it, so I'm doing it, gang!!

Now, let's get down to business!  Since all 14,000+ backers made it past the $650k mark you guys get more rooms, another girl, and all new dialogue in the game (from hitting the $550k tier too!).  The bad news is, this has serious ramifications on our ship date.  We were originally planning on shipping in October but since we have to pretty much design a TON of new stuff (which I think is extremely positive), there is no way in hell we're going to make October 2012.  We MAY be able to make December but honestly, I'd rather launch the game after the holiday season and put a lot of polish (no, not Pole-ish...I said polish!) on the game and make sure we have beta tested it enough to release.  There is nothing I can't stand more than a game that was released "to make Christmas" that is just riddled with bugs (anybody remember some unnamed PC games that would ship super buggy in hopes the patch would come out before the game hit the shelves?).  So anyway, that's the bad news.

The good news is that I've created a blog!!  I have never blogged in my entire life but I feel that now is a damn good time to start.  You guys motivated me by asking for constant updates so the way we're going to deliver them to you is via the Replay Games forum.  So far we have 2 sections:  "Announcements/News" and "Paul's development blog".  Here's the link to the READ ONLY section of the forums:  Replay read only forums.  I suggest you bookmark it since I plan on blogging pretty much every day on what's going on.  I'm not saying I won't post here (like a lot of you guys want), but it just makes sense to keep things in one place.  If you don't feel like going through the multiple forums to find what you're looking for (and reading reply after reply after reply) then you're going to love those 2 sections.

Ok, it's 2am and I seriously need to get to bed.  I haven't been skydiving since before the Kickstarter campaign and I really need to relieve some stress so I'm taking the weekend off (please don't hate me) and am going to jump out of a perfectly good airplane as many times as I can between tomorrow and Sunday.

Until next time, your humble servant,

      > We've waited for so many years, a few months aren't that bad.
Well, you're right. Put that way...

Take your time, guys. I don't mind waiting. Just make sure the game comes out bug-free.

    2. Brian L.B. on

Don't worry one bit about not making an earlier release window. If Leisure Suit Larry is to be revived as a franchise it's initial release needs to be as technically perfect as possible. One of the perks about being an indie developer, no pesky publisher breathing down your neck.

    3. Kari Salminen on

Take your time, I think a good product is much more vital than releasing for xmas. Hopefully Larry doesn't come prematurely ;)

    4. Duncan Sluijter on

Hi Paul, Grasshopper here. Hope you enjoyed the skydiving! Waiting "patiently" for another update. LOL.

I admire this statement: "There is nothing I can't stand more than a game that was released "to make Christmas" that is just riddled with bugs"

And I agree. Totally :) Take your time!

HEY... paul buddy (and everybody else involved in this game)!
we know the pressure is high, but please take a few days off. just tell us officially: WE NEED A WEEK OF VACATION and take it. Everybody will understand it.
There is no need to ruin yourself. Your health and your family lives shouldn't be at risk, so please take down a gear and take a deep breath...

    7. Bram van den Berg on

I dont mind waiting a few months or even a year longer, as long as the game gets perfect. I want NO patches. Because with good programming and proper testing of the game and a good eye for quality, patches are not needed. Thats how i think about it. Just do your thing, make it worth while for all of us. HD graphics, high quality sounds, loads of fun and LOTS and LOTS of Larry :D

We will wait, just do your best!

    8. I and I

why make it it a DLC Lee?
We've waited for so many years, a few months aren't that bad.
I'd say: just take your time and deliver a kick-ass game without too many bugs (none are preferred).

    9. Lee Chong Yew on

Well, here's an idea: how about getting the base game out the door first, then putting the extra girls, rooms, dialogs, etc in as a DLC pack later on? It adds replay value to the game, satisfies the "purists" first, and most importantly, you don't have to move the dateline too far ahead from planned if at all! Sure, it means that the extra girls will probably be released slightly later, but hey, much better than to delay the entire game, right?

Game development is always a lengthy process, so I'm not surprised by this announcement. Guess we'll be reading Paul's blog for all the details as development unfolds.. Besides, giving Larry that new Asian stripper should take up more time. :)

    13. Matthew Mather on

You guy take as much time as you need to finish the game. Just make sure to budget for the additional time: you don't want to run out of skydiving money too soon! :)

Good thing Paul is letting us know now that the game might be a little off the planned release date but if this becomes like another Duke Nukem Forever (that is taking like 13 years to finish development) then I am going to be so super pissed off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    15. S. van Hengel on

Paul i command you to stop skydiving untill this game is finished.....go fishing instead or something :)

      Larry Rocks! on

How many blockbuster adventure games have managed to make the original posted deadline? I think I speak for everyone concerned with this project that we would much prefer a quality undertaking over a proposed first deadline. What I would like to see is an adventure game that will take me back to the Sierra-On Line franchise that so many gamers have adored through the years.

    17. Dylan on

Buggiest game released to make xmas... King's Quest 7. Come on everyone was thinking it

    18. ShotGaming on

Hey if you guys delay it long enough, maybe you can put Duke Nukem in the bar!

    19. Justin

For Heavens sake do not let Larry come too soon!!!!

What if you get the "goodies" shipped out by October and just keep pluggin away at the game? That should keep the grumpies in a good mood. Besides a lot of us will be playing with the beta anyway.

    20. Serena Nelson - Hero of the AGRM

As I mentioned on the forums, I have absolutely no problem with the extra couple months delay. In fact, I kinda expected it once we hit the magic $650k number. Extra content means extra time. So, take all the time you need to make it the best Larry game it can be.
On a side note, don't forget to get the knife from the resort restaurant, the bobby pin from the "blue pate special", and the "insurance" from from the airport terminal or you won't be able to go skydiving.

    21. Devin Egan on

Everyone seems to be taking this first missed ship date really well... and this just got funded. Congrats, this much enthusiasm for a missed ship date is only going to encourage them to miss more dates. Why not just ship the game with the original content in October and then send out updates like DLC when it is ready? This isn't 1987, distribution and updates should be a lot simpler.

    22. fluffy on

I'd much rather it be great than soon! We've already been waiting what, 20 years? What's another few months?

Regarding the blog, how about posting it on an actual blog system with an RSS feed or whatever? I don't like having to check yet another site every day for updates.

    23. Bobracha on

That's not bad news. Releasing an unfinished game because your publisher forced you to is bad news. It's done when it's done, and done doesn't mean releasing a buggy game, then making your fans download a patch half the games size a week later.

I'd rather have it good than tomorrow, sir. I haven't forgotten the Christmas Sierra damaged by releasing (almost) finished games just to make sure they were out for the holidays, so that the fourth game in the Quest for Glory series was unplayable as released.

Do it right is much better IMO than do it over.

    25. Keyrock on

I don't mind the delay at all. I'd rather have a better, more polished game a few months later. Take all the time you need to make this game the best it can be.

    26. Glenn Ngo on

Paul, please take the extra time to add as much polish as possible and release the game when the team feels it's ready. I believe many of us backers are not just backing LSL but the whole Adventure game genre in general. I really miss my Sierra/Lucas Arts adventure games. Personally, I backed this project over triple the price I usually pay for 1 game because I was hoping to contribute to a game that might add to the revitalization of the genre.

    27. Palindrome Bob-XSF-I'm in AGL589-BG5.22

Another delayed game: "The Silver Lining" (previously known as KQ IX). Having overcome two 'Cease & Decists' they managed to start releasing the game in episodes last year after + 10 years. Don't think "Cognition", from the same company, also got funded on Kickstarter, will take that long. Jut to say, I don't mind one bit about delays. Besides, this one probably means I'll be able to beta-test during the Christmas-season. :-)

    28. Mark Clarke on

Blizzard pushed back Starcraft 2 almost an entire YEAR, Diablo 3 has been pushed back numerous times to ensure that the game is good in story gameplay and graphically, and just as importantly to make sure that those games are bug free, as much as is possible, before release.

I fully support this Replay games and I'd like publishers to know that meeting a deadline for release is something that detracts from said gaming experience. Meaning we may not come back for the sequel.

To kill this point even further, Half-life 2 took a long time to be released for the same reason, they wanted it to be truly an excellent game. For this reason people were absolutely blown away by the game, and to my knowledge it's one the recent games that barely has any bugs and looks
      +plays beautifully.
Half-life 3 has been kept quiet and behind closed doors, avid fans almost kicking the doors down they want to hear about it so much. It is obviously in development, they just have the same approach of not saying anything about the game or mentioning it's release date at all, I feel that they are doing the right thing. Half-life 3 will be excellent and just as innovative to it's genre as it's previous two decendants. Becuase they took their time.

It helps that they have a powerhouse like Steam to fund their way, but their principles are where they should be.

Again, take as long as you like Replay Games.

Nobody expects a Leisure Suit Larry game to make its ship date! :) We've waited about 15 years for a new real Larry game. Another few months won't matter. Looking forward to all the updates on the blog!

    30. Marcio Araujo on

Dont rush, take all the time you need. This game is not just important for us, but for the adventure game genre too. We have to prove that kickstarter games can be good games!!! That publishers were wrong!

    31. tagdancer on

Bad news? No! This are only good news!
Quality and contents is preferred! Not any lousy, buggy ,"lowcost" game that needs tons of patches to run.
I love to have a wonderful, "perfect" Larry Reloaded with lots of fun, gags, content.
Take the time you need to make it brilliant.
      btw: happy skydiving!

    32. DarthDavy on

I don't qualify getting the game later because of new and extra content in the game as bad news. That's actually good news and it's normal the game needs more time to develop now. Take all the time you need and just make the best remake of LSL1 possible!

      Fredrik Lundgren on

I agree. Spend the time you need and make the game polished. No need to rush it.

When parachuting please focus on *not* dying. We kinda need you for this game. :)

    35. eXoScoriae on

are you going to blog every day about how bloody tired you are?

    36. Gary Beltz on

No problem Paul just be careful we want you back in one piece. Be careful with your parachute jumps!

    37. Frogacuda on

I thought October was a little ambitious to begin with. 2013 is the year of the adventure renaissance anyway, so join the party.

    38. Shoganai on

lol - SERVE no wine, before its time... -.-

    39. Shoganai on

Take a page from Orson Wells, and "server no wine, before its time"

We've waited how long for another Al Lowe/LSL game? A couple extra months isn't going to hurt :P

    40. Jonathan Krarup on

Don't rush it. In the words of Shigeru Miyamoto: A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever.

    41. Sean Jordan on

Enjoy your skydiving, Paul! You've earned a weekend off!

    42. Scott Clark on

Do what you gotta do to make the best LSL game possible. I highly doubt anyone expected to see it released on the estimated release date with all of the extra content added. If they did, then too bad. Great games take time to make a great game!

    43. Zebra3 on

New release date is nothing. The most important thing is that the game is as good as it can be. So take all the time you need. :)

    44. Stargazer on

I'm all for the new release date as well. It is done when it is done. No need to rush, just take your time and get things the way you want them. :-)

    45. Kevin Behrendt on

Totally fine with me this new release date, I didn't really thought October could be hit anyway. Getting it this year would be great but only if it is bugless.

    46. Ein_Freund on

I have a idea buy a slave driver, who gonna hit you every minute, with two lash. With the save money for the 2 months you can pay him. Or more "Larry like" a dominatrix but that will cost a bit more money and probably don't help the productivity. At the end all a happy the slave driver, we and you cause the slave driver are went. XD

    47. Missing avatar

      DazzL on

Well that's fine with me. Better a quality product than a product full of bugs. At least we have something to look forward to after the holidays. So don't worry Paul

    48. folk on

I am a bit torn, to be honest. Personally I'd prefer a finished game at a later date (even Q4 2014 would be fine by me!), but at the same time I want LSL to succeed and there's no doubt that strategically it's better to launch during the PGP (Primary Gifting Period)!

I just wish that there had been somewhat more affordable access to the alpha and beta versions of the game in that case.

Don't worry about the holidays let's just focus on quality.
