So why are we jumping on the Kickstarter bandwagon with LEISURE SUIT LARRY IN THE LAND OF THE LOUNGE LIZARDS?
It’s simple. We love Larry…Larry Laffer. We were there when he was born, in 1987. We were there for his last adventure, LOVE FOR SAIL, almost exactly 10 years later.
And we’ve long wished for a version that would combine the characters and game play we already love with:
- The freedom to play on mobile devices
- A modern point-and-click/touchscreen interface
- Updated, ultra-high res graphics
- Fully voiced characters
- Even more of the humor that’s made Al Lowe a household name…like “Borders” and “Enron”!
So we’re making it. From scratch. And we want YOUR help.
Do you remember Lefty's Bar from the original? Did you know it's famous?
We've already accomplished THREE of the hardest tasks (and one easier one):
- Prying the Leisure Suit Larry license out of the hands of Big Software. DONE!
- Convincing Al Lowe himself to come out of retirement for this top-to-bottom re-imagining of his 25-year-old creation. DONE!
- Reaching our initial funding goal ($500,000) so that we can lock in the project. DONE!
- Setting ourselves a new goal of $750,000! so that we can add vastly more content and loads of incredible new features. Al, Josh, the Replay gang and Adventure Mob have a laundry list of bonus features, all aimed at adding length, breadth, and 500,000 new laughs to the original game. Some of the features we'd desperately love to add are: animated intro and cinematic cutscenes, maps, dialogues, more speech, foreign languages, Easter Eggs, minigames (in the LSL tradition: fun to play, easy to skip), new puzzles, new girls, new locations...and that's just the top of the list.
What’s in it for you? That depends on what you pledge in Larry’s Kickstarter campaign!
Take a look at the list of rewards we’re giving to Larry’s supporters. They include everything from a copy of the game to actually being PART OF the game – as a character! -- to actually going to Las Vegas with your very own private limo and villa on top of the world's coolest hotels with Al Lowe and writer Josh Mandel!
Those rewards are cumulative. Pledge at the $100 level, for instance, and you’ll not only get the $100 reward, you’ll also get the rewards given for $50, $25, and $15 pledges. So your sack of goodies can fill up VERY quickly.
Now, these rewards have never been available before, and will never be available again. They’re strictly for this game, for this campaign, and every single one has been approved by Al Lowe. They are collector’s items to commemorate YOUR partnership in gaming’s biggest comeback EVER.
So please help us make LEISURE SUIT LARRY IN THE LAND OF THE LOUNGE LIZARDS: the 25th ANNIVERSARY EDITION a perverted, hilarious reality. Kick in now, and stake your claim in gaming history.
The team that created Leisure Suit Larry 1 has been reassembled to create a 2012 "Reloaded" version. Al Lowe, Josh Mandel, Sabine Duvall, and Leslie Balfour have teamed up with Replay Games to form what we call "The Dream Team" of adventure games. We'll be making Leisure Suit Larry 1-7 and keeping you guys informed every step of the way. If this game is successful then we can bring you guys the rest of the Leisure Suit Larry games (and maybe even Leisure Suit Larry 4: The Case Of The Missing Floppies)!
We couldn't do it without you, the most loyal fans in video game history!! We get all of your fan mail everyday and reply to as much of it as we possibly can. This is what drove us to create this Kickstarter campaign. Had we taken this idea to a publisher, they would've turned us down cold since they think adventure games are dead.
So, please help us make this a reality and bring Leisure Suit Larry back to his dad, Al Lowe, like he was intended. We promise to keep you laughing and wetting your pants all the way 'till the end of the game!!!
What happens if we exceed our goal?
Depending on how far past our goal we get, here's the list of things we'd like to do with the extra development effort:
- Fully localize all the voice overs in to as many languages as possible. We will start with FIGS (French, Italian, German, Spanish) and then branch out from there.
- We will shoot Leisure Suit Larry on to additional platforms: XBLA, PSN, and of course: Linux!
- The game will come to life with a live orchestra performing all your favorite Leisure Suit Larry tunes.
- We got game! When our funding goal is exceeded we plan on adding more rooms, more girls, and more lousy pick up lines. We're basically making it bigger, badder, and uncut (that came out wrong but you know what we mean)!
Al, Josh, and the guys behind the scenes that are making this a dream come true for all of us!!!
p.s. we have 2 extra reward tiers but they are a bit too......"outlandish" to put in this official Kickstarter page so go here and we'll let you know what they are.
This must be the #1 question asked all over the internet today! We announced in October that we secured the development and publishing rights to the original Leisure Suit Larry franchise (series) of games. We showed a 1-room "proof of concept" that helped us secure the rights, so we showed those images in our press release at the time. We originally planned on getting VC (venture capital) funding so we can re-make the entire franchise from scratch for all the new platforms with the best graphics style, voice overs, orchestrated sound, etc. The response we received shocked us. This is what they literally told us "we like your company but we want nothing to do with Leisure Suit Larry since it will tarnish our good name". So it took us a few months to re-think our strategy and when we went to DICE to do the interview with Spike TV, we saw what amazing success our friends at Double Fine had and Tim convinced us to do the same.
How come it's costing you $500,000 to do a re-make of Leisure Suit Larry and it only cost Double Fine $400,000 for a brand new game?
This was another really popular question today. I (Paul) just got off the phone with Greg, the producer over at Double Fine and asked him how it was possible to make a full fledged adventure game for $400k when it's costing us $500k to re-make Leisure Suit Larry. He told me that they initially only planned on making a small iOS game with 3 people on the entire team: 1 artist, 1 programmer, and 1 producer. That, plus they already had a game engine they spent millions of dollars making for a previous game whereas we're using the Unity engine and we're starting with the PC English version, which is a huge, huge difference!! The only thing we can re-use is the original design. Everything else we need to create from scratch: characters, environments, animations, engineering, and even sound effects.
I love the game but I would pledge more if you guys made a brand new Leisure Suit Larry game instead of a re-make of LSL 1
We would LOVE to make a new version of Leisure Suit Larry!! We thought about making LSL 4 (the missing floppies) or 8, or even 69!! The problem is, when we licensed the title from Codemasters back in October (you guys probably saw our big press release), we only licensed the re-makes. So we're doing that to fulfill our obligation. What we REALLY want to do is to make Leisure Suit Larry 8. To do that, though, it costs a hell of a lot more money than $500,000. To put it in perspective, LSL 7 cost about $2mm back in 1996 which is about $3mm today. The reason why we're re-making the original 7 versions is so we can bring them up to date, up to speed, and make enough money to build Leisure Suit Larry 8 (maybe even 4 but Al is a bit reluctant on #4). We really want to hit #8 out of the ball park so being 100% honest here, that means we have to save up enough money from the sales of 1-7 to make #8 which we see costing roughly $5 - $8 million dollars.
OK, had a LONG ASS talk with the programmers and this is what we're able to give you guys with the $500k Kickstarter pledge. Ready? 1) PC 2) Mac 3) iPad 4) Android tablets. Once we surpass our $500k Kickstarter goal we can talk about additional rooms, more girls, Larry getting in to more trouble, and yes, even a version for you hardcore Linux users out there!!
TOTALLY!! Al, Josh, & Paul were on the phone tonight discussing how we can implement new rooms, new girls, new puzzles, and new ways for Larry to get in trouble. So the short answer is yes, if we exceed our funding goal additional game play is in the plan. BUT, it needs to be designed and we don't plan on doing that until we hit our first milestone of our $500k Kickstarter budget.
Are you kidding? How could we possibly get rid of the famous Leisure Suit Larry age verification? As a matter of fact, if you donate at one of the higher levels your name will be featured in the quiz and will be part of Sierra history....FOREVER!!!
Our good friends over at Tell Tale have licensed King's Quest from Activision. If we do our job right then maybe, just MAYBE we'll be able to partner with them and ruinite the Space Quest team, King's Quest team (go Roberta!!!!) and Police Quest team for re-makes or new versions of those (Space Quest 7 anybody?).
Yes!! You can pick between PC - Steam, PC stand alone, or Mac stand alone. If you chose the Mac version, however, you can not get it through the AppStore. We will need to send you a link to download the Mac version directly to your computer.
Yes please! But also know, you'll only need to do that once. So if you pledge at the $40 dollar level, adding $15 dollars will allow us to ship the T-shirt to you. If you pledge $100 and you live outside the US, you'll need to add $15 dollars to get everything from that tier down sent to you. The rule is, if you are getting items shipped to you at any level, and you don't live in the US, adding $15 helps us get your items to you in safe and secure packaging.
No way. We'll value the package we send to you at the cost of the items in the box, not how much money you donated to the Kickstarter campaign. This should help keep customs fees low for our non-US backers.
