From the makers of the acclaimed, multi award-winning feature film The Legend of Ben Hall comes a new chapter in their ongoing bushranger saga, The Legends Anthology... and who better than the most iconic bushranger of them all.
Let's be honest. We have yet to see a big-screen adaptation of Australia's most iconic outlaw told with historical accuracy and free of the fictional tampering of previous versions.
With your support, we are going to produce the most epic, emotional and most importantly accurate motion picture on Ned Kelly - ever. This will be a grand, sweeping Revisionist Western that will explode onto the big screen and re-introduce the world to one of the most controversial tales in Australian history - like they've never seen before.

If we don't reach our target of AUD$2,500,000 by June 30th, the film will not go ahead.
That would be a very sad reality, so we ask that if you want to see this film, please make a pledge and share this project as much as you can.
We have 38 days... we can do this!
Every pledge is important, and no amount is too small. Consider it an investment in your future entertainment and in Australian culture.
For the cost of a trip to the local cinema or buying a new release DVD - you could make a vital pledge and make this film happen!.
This is the most ambitious crowd-funding campaign for an Australian film ever attempted. Let's show the world we can achieve it and break some records!
MAKE A PLEDGE. MAKE HISTORY.
The Legend of Ned Kelly will be a gritty, cinematic and spectacular motion picture depicting the life of Edward 'Ned' Kelly, from his troubled childhood to his time riding with bushranger Harry Power; from his 3-year imprisonment to his eventual rise to a bushranger and the country's most wanted outlaw, culminating in the infamous showdown at Glenrowan.
Filled with heart-wrenching drama, heart-pounding action sequences, warm humour, powerful performances, breath-taking cinematography and stirring music, The Legend of Ned Kelly will finally give audiences what they have been demanding for decades - an accurate depiction of our most infamous Australian legend.
We want to create a world that you can smell and taste; characters you fall in love with and care about. This will be a tantalising portrait of a complex and conflicted man whose legacy still endures and whose name has become a cultural icon. The Legend of Ned Kelly will be an engrossing Australian Western that sheds light on this dark chapter of colonial history.
Our commitment to historical accuracy and authenticity is unmatched in Australian cinema, with The Legend of Ben Hall proving to be the most faithful adaptation of a bushranger story ever committed to the screen.
What we care most about making a highly-entertaining, emotionally-impacting motion picture destined to become an Australian classic.

The Legend of Ben Hall began as a highly-successful Kickstarter project in 2014. Check out the original campaign here.
FilmInk: "...The Legend Of Ben Hall comes thundering over the cinematic hill in a sweeping, glorious surge worthy of a cash-pumped mainstream epic... an impressive feature bold in its sense of ambition and rich with character-driven intimacy..."
Cinema Australia: "From the costumes to the production design, props and set construction, 'The Legend of Ben Hall' will please even the most hardcore historian. It’s breath-takingly captured by cinematographer Peter Szilveszter."
The Reel Word: "A must-see for both history buffs and anyone in the mood for a uniquely Australian Western... the film is as smoothly produced as any Hollywood blockbuster and the cinematography is simply incredible, encapsulating the unforgiving beauty of the Australian landscape."
Jim Schembri 3AW: "...impressive, ambitious, incident-packed feature from writer/director Matthew Holmes... with authentic production values and fine cinematography... this is a solid film that sticks as close as it can to the history of one of Australia's least known bushrangers."
Deadline Magazine: "The film does not lack action, but Matthew Holmes doesn’t just deliver shoot-out after shoot-out; instead he manages to deliver story and drama to fuel the appetite of people who aren’t necessarily fans of the genre. Combined with the wonderful images of the Australian landscape, Matthew Holmes has delivered one of the most unique and impressive Westerns of the last years."
- All funds raised will go toward the production - cast, crew, sets, costumes, props, horses, coaches, cameras, lighting, visual effects, armoury, editing, sound and music - the list just goes on!
- Making films is an expensive process, but our team has proven their ability to maximise every dollar and make an indie film look like a Hollywood blockbuster.
- By privately financing the film, we have 100% control over the script and production, which allows us the creative freedom to make this film exactly the way it needs to be.
- Raising this money via Kickstarter goes on to unlock even more money for the production, including the Australian Tax Offset and private investments which will double our Kickstarter amount!
Every dollar raised goes into producing the film.
And what's even more exciting - if we raise beyond our target amount, we can make the film BIGGER, BETTER and BOLDER! Check out our 'Stretch Goals' below!
A 'Stretch Goal' is an additional one in case we exceed our initial funding goal. Wouldn't that be amazing? This additional finance will be used to add or enhance another aspect of the project.
STRETCH GOAL ONE - $3,000,000
If we finance $500,000 over our initial goal, we will be approaching a major Hollywood star for the role of Ned Kelly. (Don't worry - he will be an Australian actor with the right age and look) We already have him in mind, but for legal reasons we can't say who it is. But having this bonus money will allow us to make him offer he can't refuse!
STRETCH GOAL TWO - $3,500,000
We will now add a major sequence into the story that we initially were going to leave out due to the huge expense involved... but now we can include it! This scene requires a very large outdoor set to be constructed... and that extra $500K will make it possible!
STRETCH GOAL THREE - $4,000,000
Now the production will be seriously punched into OVER-DRIVE! We can now increase the scale and spectacle of the film beyond our wildest dreams! From aerial photography shots, bigger sets and increased visual effects - The Legend of Ned Kelly will become even more legendary.
STRETCH GOAL THREE - $4,250,000
We are now going to make a special half-hour movie about Harry Power entitled Harry Power: Dead Man Walking as a special feature on the DVD and Blu-Ray, so you can learn more about what happened to this amazing historical character after his time riding with Ned Kelly!
How can you be assured that backing this project will lead to a completed product?
1. Because we've done this before. Our 2014 Kickstarter Campaign for The Legend of Ben Hall began as a short film. What we finally delivered was a 139-minute feature. So not only did we deliver what we promised - we over-delivered.
2. We know how to make movies in today's climate. That means delivering a world-class product on a modest budget, making the final film look HUGE. We always maximise our resources and our work reflects that. Every dollar will end up on the big screen, which is exactly where it should be.
3. We are professional filmmakers. This film will be made with all the protocols and legalities of a professional film production, including insurances and a completion guarantor. Every one of our Heads of Departments are film industry professionals and our collective experience spans decades.
4. We're passionate about what we do. This project is our passion and it means everything to us. There is no way we would let ourselves down or let those down who have supported it by not completing it. We simply cannot wait to start!
Raising money for independent films is challenging these days. We want our audience to be the financiers for The Legend of Ned Kelly because we want to make this movie for our audience with no compromises.
To produce this film within the traditional Hollywood system, or even via government funding bodies, would mean we would have to lose our creative independence. That would mean we could not deliver the film as promised. Here's why:
1. THE SCRIPT. We care about the accuracy and integrity of the Ned Kelly story. Financing this film independently gives us 100% creative control over the script, and we can avoid having any third parties forcing us to compromise that history in any way.
2. FINAL CUT. This is the industry term for who has the final say on how the movie will be edited and what the running time should be. Hollywood films often require that the financiers have Final Cut - not the director. This can be very destructive, as they often force the director to make changes that go against the integrity of the film and the director's vision. We believe a film should always be seen exactly the director intended and should deliver exactly what the audience is expecting.
3. CASTING CHOICES. Traditionally, in order to secure financing, a director will often have to choose from a list of pre-approved actors willing to make the movie and there may not be the right actor to play the part in that list. Basically, you have to cast who they want, not who you want. We want the right person for the role, and being independent - we can choose them.
On The Legend of Ben Hall, the filmmakers had 100% control of the script and final cut - which is why it remains an authentic and uncompromising adaption of Ben Hall's story.
Quite simply, the history.
Just like 'The Legend of Ben Hall', our film will be based on the historical accounts taken from a wide range of available research and resources. Adapting history for a film is always challenging, and there will always be some aspects of a historical story that will be unknown and we have to use some creative licence to fill in those blanks.
Script writers Matthew Holmes, Aidan Phelan and Steve Jager are not only massive Ned Kelly history enthusiasts, but are 100% committed to delivering a movie that is as faithful to the real events as possible to create the most unbiased and balanced portrayal to date.
Our script will not be based on any fictional Ned Kelly novel either.
The Legend of Ned Kelly will be classified a Drama, Action, Biographical Western.
The Legend of Ned Kelly will be much like The Legend of Ben Hall in tone and style - an historically-based, character-driven drama with some dynamic action scenes and a solid, emotional heart. This will be a serious film, but one with warmth and humanity that looks at the story from both sides of the conflict. It will be complex and controversial study of Ned Kelly himself, his family and the people around him.
It will also be a vast and epic Australian Western, filled with action, betrayals and romance. It will be filmed in stunning locations across regional Victoria.
It will not be a slow, depressing gothic Western, nor will it be campy, shoot-em-up melodrama. Nor will be a generic 'Robin Hood' tale or an exercise in police bashing.
It will be 100% produced in Victoria, Australia.
Production will take place throughout Victoria. It is our intention to shoot most of the film in 'Kelly Country' so the landscapes are a correct representation of the regions that Ned Kelly lived and roamed.
This project will provide job opportunities for hundreds of Victorian filmmakers, artists, technicians and workers.
Casting will take place after the Kickstarter campaign.
If this Kickstarter campaign succeeds, we will have the financial clout to make offers to major Australian film and television stars in the leading roles.
We have our eyes on several fantastic actors - but we can't say who until they are officially signed on. But trust us, we will have a great line up of Australian talent, both familiar and fresh.
We understand that opinions on Ned Kelly are vastly polarised.
To make the most balanced film possible, our film will not take sides on the issue of 'hero' or 'villain'. Rather, we will present Ned's story as factually as we can and let you decide for yourself.
Hear what the screenwriters have to say in the video below:
The film will be told primarily from Ned Kelly's perspective, so naturally there will be a degree of empathy and understanding given toward him as the film's central protagonist. However, the film will not shy away from the more controversial and questionable aspects of his life.
The same goes for the police; we want to portray them with empathy and understanding also. All characters within this story are extremely complex; this is not simply a 'bad guys vs good guys' film.
We do not wish to define Ned Kelly in simple terms as hero or villain. The portrayal of bushranger Ben Hall in The Legend of Ben Hall will give you a good idea of how we plan to achieve a more neutral perspective. Perhaps the best way to describe our on-screen Ned Kelly is that of the anti-hero.
An anti-hero is a central protagonist with a major, or fatal, flaw that often leads to their downfall or destruction. The anti-hero is a typically flawed character, yet not an evil one. Unlike the conventional hero that works to overcome his flaws and achieve victory, an anti-hero is usually motivated by deeper personal problems and their morality is not as easily defined as the traditional hero (Superman, Captain America). Good examples of cinematic anti-heroes are Jesse James, Henry Hill, Billy The Kid, John Dillinger, Wolverine, Michael Corleone, Tyler Durden and William Munny.
We don't believe any character in this complex history can simply be defined as good or bad. Bushranger or police, everyone exists in many shades of grey, not black and white. We are not seeking to glorify criminals, nor do we want to demonise the police.
We want our film to to be a study of the Ned Kelly and not a judgment. We want people to know why this story happened, so we are going to portray it to the best of our abilities using the historical information we have.
WILL NED KELLY SPEAK WITH AN IRISH ACCENT?
No. Our Ned Kelly will speak with a 'native' accent, meaning a formative version of the Australian accent. There is a great deal of evidence to suggest that Ned did not speak with the broad Irish accent that most film adaptions have depicted. We will develop an accent that closely resembles the Australian accent of the time.
There will be two versions of the film, so you can choose whichever version you prefer. How cool is that?
The 2 hour version will be made for Theatrical Release. This version will require many scenes to be cut in order to achieve a running time that cinemas will accept.
The 3 hour extended version will be the Definitive Version of The Legend of Ned Kelly with no compromises.
Both versions will be available for you to choose from.
FIRST OF ALL - THANK YOU SO MUCH!
You clearly want this movie to happen - but there is so much more you can do to ensure that it does and we need your help!
Remember, if we do not reach our target goal of $2,500,000 the project will not go ahead. Let's not allow that to happen!
The best thing you can do now is SHARE and PROMOTE!
- Post this project regularly on social media. Post about it on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Reddit, Tumblr and Google Plus at least once a day! Social media is the best way to spread this project far and wide. We need to get the word out!
- Encourage your friends and family to pledge. Get them as excited about it as you are. Don't let up, we only have 38 days.
- Share this campaign with your work mates, team mates or people at your social club, church or organisation.
- Send emails to those who might love to see this film.

All it takes is your BELIEF, your PLEDGE and your SUPPORT.
- If we achieve this, The Legend of Ned Kelly will be amongst the Top 10 crowd-funded films of all time!
- If 1.5% of Australia's population pledged just $1.00 each toward this film we would exceed our target - that's how achievable this is.
- If every person who pledges shares this project with just ten people, we can reach thousands of people within days!
We have 38 days and counting!
Let's tell this Australian story properly.
Risks and challenges
Non-completion is a very minimal risk because our production team has done this before. Our 2014 Kickstarter Campaign for The Legend of Ben Hall short film was highly successful. What we finally delivered was a 139-minute feature, so not only did we deliver what we promised - we over-delivered. All pledgers received their rewards.
All films are challenging to make, but we know how to make movies in today's climate. That means over-coming each problem professionally and swiftly to deliver a world-class product on a modest budget. As proven by our first production The Legend of Ben Hall, we maximise our resources and every dollar will end up on the big screen - exactly where it should be.
The exact completion date of this film is dependant on factors we cannot possibly predict at this time. Our best estimation is late 2018 or early 2019. But due to future distribution deals and other such unknown factors, the release date may shift earlier or later. We will keep all pledgers notified well ahead of time on our progress in that area.
OUR PLEDGE TO YOU
We are professional filmmakers. This film will be made with all the protocols and legalities of an professional Australian production, including insurances and a completion guarantor. Each of our Heads of Departments will be film industry professionals and our collective experience within the industry spans decades.
Our Kickstarter Pledgers are our primary support and as such - we will treat every one of our pledgers with respect, importance and transparency. Updates on the project will be frequent and in the unlikely event of any serious problems faced by the production, all will be explained and worked through swiftly and professionally.
We live to make movies. This project is our passion and it means everything to us. There is no way we would let ourselves down or let those down who have supported it by not completing it. We simply cannot wait to start!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
