Note: The Beta/Demo here is separate from being a Beta Tester under the tiers. If you pledge and become part of the Beta Testing Program, you will continue to receive an updated game client bi-weekly or as needed for bug fixes and added content up to release!

Legend of Lotus is a Steam-Punk-esque, JRPG, that takes place in the world of Genos. Sentient life was spawned by the arrival of a powerful stone known as the Lotus.
As humans and elves matured as species and societies, they became enamored with ideas of utilizing the stone’s energy to improve their quality of life. Despite advancing technology spurred by their human counterparts, a subset of elves began to experiment with the dangerous practice of magic – utilizing the Lotus’ energy to alter the very fabric of space-time.
Due to a deadly accident, the Lotus exploded, destroying the shared capital of the elves and humans, scorching much of the land, and separating the two groups, eventually inciting war.
Ren, a new graduate of the human Officer’s Training Academy, is assigned a secretive mission. During the course of his mission, he comes to find things are not as simple as he’s been taught. He must put aside all prejudices, all preconceptions, and find his place in history.
As nerds and fans of old school RPGs - you know... the kind we'd run home from school to play - we wanted to make a game in the style of those nostalgic works like The Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, and the classic Final Fantasy games. While we love the game play, style, and memories of staying home sick from school (when really we just held our thermometer under a lamp so we could finish the latest quest), all we dedicated fans of the genre have probably played our favorite entries a hundred times over. We know where every chest, secret room, and big boss battle will take place, and exactly what we need to do to get there.
Legend of Lotus fills that nostalgic longing for the retro-styled JRPGs we love, while bringing a fresh new story with a new cast of characters - and a few new technological developments that don't detract from the game play we miss but that enhance the storytelling. These include character portraits, animated battle scenes, and a relationship system with your friends, enemies, and two love interests.
You control Ren, a recent graduate of the Rangers Training Academy on his first mission - one for which he was hand-selected: to track and capture an elvish specimen. However, when the mission goes awry, he begins to uncover the true reason for the war and forge his own path.
Axel is Ren's hometown best friend, and who follows him to the Training Academy in Everwinter. He is one of your first party members, and stands by you no matter what - even when Ren starts to have "dangerous ideas" like trusting an elf.
Taya is one of two love interests, and among the first characters introduced. Though shy, she can speak her mind when pressed. She has a deep distrust of elves, as her Uncle Auhn disappeared during a dangerous mission in Elvin Territory.
Arinnel is the second love interest, met along your journeys. She is carefree and cheerful, always looking on the bright side of life, living from moment to moment. However, she does want to bring lasting peace to Genos, a goal that Ren comes to share.
Confident, cocky, but with skills to back it up, Kai is either your toughest rival or a strong comrade in your team.
Adin is an older, wiser warrior with plenty of battle experience but a mysterious background.
Bron is an old friend of Taya's Uncle Auhn, and was part of the mission when Auhn succumbed to enemy attack. Laden with guilt at leaving a party member behind, Bron hasn't achieved the level of success that some of his peers have. He accompanies your group as a sort of guide, having been part of similar mission to Elvin Territory before.
Jeth is a Plains Elf, who comes to assist your party through Elvin Territory, during your investigations into your findings. He is cool, confident, but, when all is said and done, he's still an elf.
The Acolyte (AKA "The Dark One" or simply "???") is a shadowy figure who claims that he is not your enemy, but whose actions don't support it.

Another option for the tiers including character portraits is for my rendition of your character to appear in our game, just like Petula from You Are Not the Hero!
This is the kind of quality that you can expect when you pledge to one of the appropriate tiers! Send us a picture of you (or your cat, if that's appropriate), and perhaps a little bit of detail - like a Genos-ified name, and eventually meet yourself in the world of Legend of Lotus!
Another option allows you to be memorialized somewhere within the game, just like Shane!
And speaking of cats, the "MEOWZERS" reward tier promises that your pet can appear in-game as part of a quest to gain a legendary item. Here's a sample of how your pet can appear:
When you pledge to the appropriate tier or above, you receive the Limited Edition Legend of Lotus SNES-style controller for PC (USB). Remember the good ol' days of classic SNES RPGs while enjoying a brand new story!
The Origins Comic offered as an incentive is currently in the works, looking to be about 20 pages of original art. It defines some of Genos' mythology, as well as some of the backstory to the main villain and the explosion of the Lotus. Much of that will be alluded to or explained through the course of the game - but seeing it directly from his point of view, as the catastrophe happens, will bring a new level of depth to his motivations.
Legend of Lotus follows in the classic style of 16-bit RPGs, while also displaying unique character portraits for the lead cast and all NPCs. The video above has some gameplay footage, but take a peak at some screenshots:
Justin Fales is a gamer, musician, and all-around good guy. He is taking on the brunt of world-building, coding, and event creation.
Danielle Fale Murray is a manga-aficionado who has been drawing and creating stories since she could hold a crayon. Solid plots and good character development are her main concerns in any creative endeavor.
With all the custom scripting and tilesets we're already using, we need money to buy the licensing to make this a commercial venture. In addition to that, thelotuswar.wordpress.com is an out-dated, and overly-long URL; it would be fantastic to have the money to buy a domain name, and perhaps even hire a graphic designer to create a user-friendly site from which we can sell our game and keep you updated on future ventures.
In addition to that, while we already have a pool of beta testers, anyone who buys the game will also have the option of getting a "preview" of sorts by being able to test out our progress. Those who provide feedback will have a special listing in our end credits.
In addition to Legend of Lotus, we already have lots of ideas for future games; in one, new technology has made it possible to explore the depths of the human mind as a virtual reality; in another, a race of artificial organic humans have been enslaved - three rotating protagonists will fight for their future; in another, you are a dog who has lost his boy - journey wordlessly but with "smell vision" to find him and bring him home.
While new games would be years in the making (Legend of Lotus has been an on-going project since April 2013), a successful Kickstarter for our inaugural entry will heighten the chances of these future projects getting the green light.
If we can meet at $2000 goal, the game will finally be able to come to life. This is where your support comes in! Everyone contributing $15 and up will be awarded an early copy of the game, digital media accompaniments, and our eternal gratitude!
$2500 - Expanded world, 30 new quest lines, more characters, towns, and secrets. We will also be able to create a more... well... cinematic opening cinematic.
$3000 - DRAGON FIGHT!!!! - Legend has it that when the Lotus erupted, a terrifying beast was born in the depths of Genos. An animated battler, a portrait, and a cut scene cinematic will chronicle your epic battle! We will also ensure that there are 10 unique animated monsters for Ren and company to fight, plus the malevolent humans they will need to fend off!
*NOTE!* This Stretch Goal has been updated! Formerly, it included "+3 enemy battlers and +6 legendary items." These promises still remain in tact!
$4000 - ADDITIONAL LOVE INTEREST - We have the Girl Next Door and the Forbidden Love Interest, but if we meet this stretch goal, we will add the potential for a Tsundere relationship in the mix.
*Note!* This Stretch Goal has been updated! It formerly included an animated Dragon Battler and a quest line leading up to your battle! As that tier was lowered to the $3000 tier, that promise still holds true! This goal was formerly the $6500 goal, which has been dropped so that you gracious funders have a greater chance of seeing this recognized ;)
$5000 - 3 secret party members/battlers will be included in the narrative, upon the completion of secret quests.
$8000 - SHIPWRECKED! - A new island will be discovered off the coast of Genos, adding three additional hours of gameplay, and loads of new quests - as well as a new branch in the narrative, more characters to meet, 3 additional types of animated enemy battlers, and 1 legendary quest item.
Risks and challenges
All long-term projects are subject to obstacles and potential roadblocks - but with Legend of Lotus already a year and a half into development, several of those challenges have already been overcome.
We are all familiar with system failures that might befall computers - but we have already taken preventative measures (such as frequent file back-ups on remote drives, and cloud storage) to ensure that any such set-back will not irreparably delay our game for you, the player and backer.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
