“Honestly, man, I can’t get behind this.  I’ve seen images of the “portraits” that don’t actually look like the people ostensibly depicted…”

That was Bobby Beausoleil’s response to my request to talk about his time at Spahn Ranch and his participation in the Gary Hinman murder. My art was being criticized by a man that plunged a knife into an innocent music teacher and then smothered him with a pillow to make sure the job was done.

The life of an artist isn’t for the thin skinned.

Nevertheless, I moved forward with creating my graphic novel LEAVE SOMETHING WITCHY, the story of the Manson Murders.

Like most who read a lot of true crime novels, I am fascinated by the bizarre story of the Manson Family. The infamous love and murder cult from the 1960s.

One aspect of the Manson story that always fascinated me is how he not only managed to attract wayward youth, but how many of those young people were capable of murder. What are the odds? There were communes all over California and the United States during that era, but none are remembered for murder. Yet a group of hippies at Spahn Ranch managed to have 7 (at least) ready and willing killers.

How did Charlie bring that dark side out of these people? Did he really mold them into killers? Or were they already killers who just needed a push?

It was this question that I sought to answer when I began making LEAVE SOMETHING WITCHY.

Once I started the research process, I realized that the motive, Helter Skelter was so bizarre and unbelievable that there had to be more to it. Turns out there was definitely more to it.

The first time I drew Sharon Tate, I, like most people that have seen her, was struck by her beauty. She's the epitomie of the Hollywood Starlet. When you draw someone, you're forced to really look at them. Eyes being the most important part to capturing life in your drawing. As I drew Sharon's eyes for the first time, I became incredibly saddened. Those eyes watched at Tex wrapped a rope around her neck. They watched Patricia Krenwinkel, knife in hand, chase her dear friend Abigail out of her house. Then they pleaded with Tex and Susan to let her live… to let her have her baby… suddenly I'm not drawing the eyes of a beautiful actress, I'm drawing eyes that would see unspeakable horror.

They say once you travel down the dark tunnel that is making sense of the Manson murders, the darker and more confusing it becomes. Charlie loved to say that “no sense makes sense” and that about sums up the Manson Murders.

Most people start with Vincent Bugliosi’s book “Helter Skelter” when they want to learn more about the most famous murders in the history of American crime. But once you go beyond that book. Beyond Wikipedia and made for TV documentaries. Deep into the world of online Manson Murder websites and blogs, you enter a domain of amateur detectives who are researching murder motives ranging from Helter Skelter to copycat murders to drug burns gone wrong. Each with their own catalog of evidence supporting why that murder motive is the “real reason”.

Six years of researching, writing and drawing about Charlie and the family and I can’t say I’m anymore clear on why those poor people were so savagely killed. I do believe that the “Helter Skelter” motive was not the one and only reason, however, I do think it played a part, tucked into the dark, hazy, LSD damaged corners of their brains.

During my research, I spoke with authors on the Manson subject, friends of Manson himself and former Manson Family members to gather as much information as possible to depict what it was like to be in the Manson "sphere of influence" in the summer of 1969.

The end result was LEAVE SOMETHING WITCHY.

A 219 page graphic novel six years in the making.

The book is completed and ready for printing.

This is where you come in. Thanks so much for your time and hopefully, pledge.

Randolph Gentile attended Pratt Institute and landed an internship in the famous Marvel Bullpen. He turned that into a full-time gig in the now defunct Marvel in-house lettering department. He later transitioned to the Virtual Calligraphy lettering studio. With VC he lettered damn near every Marvel book at one time or another including Amazing Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Uncanny X-Men, Punisher, and Daredevil. After 7 years Randolph decided to leave VC, after which he briefly lettered for DC Comics where his work was seen in funny books like Batman, Detective Comics, Gotham Underground, Teen Titans and Booster Gold.

He has also self-published an autobiographical comic called "NYComix" and a full-length Slasher Comic titled "Viral" both available in digital format on Comixology.

The goal of my project is to print and distribute a trade paperback of “Leave Something Witchy” to backers and comic book shops.
