And Update #1 is available here.
What are Chai Dice?
Chai Dice will be a set of eight wooden dice featuring Lea's original full color illustrations of chai ingredients. Roll the dice, fire up a burner, and follow the randomly generated recipe to its delicious conclusion. Chai Dice will be designed so that traditional ingredients like cardamom and ginger appear with greater frequency than more exotic ones like saffron and vanilla bean. They'll encourage creativity, spontaneity, and an exploration of new intriguing flavors. Discover your very own special chai!
What ingredients are on the dice?
Chai Dice are loaded with wonderful spices, herbs, teas, and sweeteners - 30 ingredients in all.
Teas: black, green, rooibos
Spices: cardamom, ginger, black peppercorns, white peppercorns, fennel, cumin, star anise, allspice, bay leaves, coriander, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, saffron, vanilla bean
Herbs and other: mint, lemongrass, licorice root, orange peel, rose petals, cocoa, milk
Sweeteners: cane sugar, maple syrup, brown sugar, honey, agave syrup*
* Don't worry if you're not someone who keeps agave syrup in the house at all times! The suggested instructions will allow for the fact that you may not always have every ingredient on hand.
And there's a 100% Organic Chai Spice Kit...
The Organic Chai Spice Kit is a custom assortment of most of the ingredients featured on the dice, plus a convenient mesh tea strainer. The kit includes ample supplies of 24 different certified organic ingredients (enough to make about 50 cups of chai) including:
- Assam black tea, Gunpowder green tea, rooibos tea
- Cardamom, white peppercorns, black peppercorns, fennel, allspice, coriander, cumin, star anise, cinnamon, vanilla bean, nutmeg, cloves
- Ginger, bay leaves, cocoa powder, licorice root, mint, lemongrass, rose petals, and orange peel
- Mesh tea strainer
While many spice kits feature fancy glass jars or other expensive containers, we'll package certified organic herbs and spices in resealable food-safe bags so that we can provide much greater quantities. Each Organic Chai Spice Kit will then be packaged in a large 8 x 12" muslin sack.
What exactly are Chai Dice?
- Eight 3/4 inch wooden dice per set
- Dice are made of white birch or maple wood
- Illustrations are printed in the USA on water-resistant material (since you'll of course be using them in the kitchen!)
- Packaged in glass jar with screw-on lid and instructions tag
- Assembled by really nice folks in our studio in California
What is chai?
It's tea (literally). They've been making chai in India for 5,000 years and there are nearly as many recipes in existence as there are chai makers. It's often made with black tea leaves, milk, cardamom, ginger, and an infinitely variable assortment of other spices, herbs, sweeteners, and flavors. Served warm, chai is sweet, relaxing, and the perfect beverage for putting your phone away and having a peaceful chat with friends or family.
How will the Kickstarter funds be used?
Your pledge will help fund the initial print run of colorful illustrations, all materials including wood cubes, glass jars, spices, muslin sacks, and the assembly of Chai Dice and Organic Chai Spice Kits. Kickstarter funds will also cover all shipping and postage costs.
When will Chai Dice and Organic Chai Spice Kits ship?
We will initiate the print run upon reaching our fundraising goal and will assemble the dice sets and spice kits shortly thereafter. Rewards will ship in late-October, 2013. You'll have your goods in hand well before the holidays!
Who is Lea? What is Leafcutter Designs?
Lea Redmond is a collector of curious objects and a maker of unusual things and experiences. She is always looking for the poem hiding inside things: a saltshaker, a clothes tag, a hand gesture, a cloud. She is infinitely intrigued by the way experiences can slip from the ordinary to the extraordinary and she endeavors to design things that hold this possibility.
Leafcutter Designs is a creative studio in Berkeley, CA run by Lea and her brother Devin. Leafcutter Designs offers lots of unique and thoughtful gift items, quirky services like the World's Smallest Post Service, and ongoing social art projects.
Risks and challenges
Risk #1: Working with Suppliers
There could be unexpected delays or challenges with the quality of the wood cubes or in getting sufficient quantities. To address these risks, we've approached multiple wood cube suppliers and have approved samples from two different mills. They are aware of our specs and are ready to proceed once we settle on an order quantity. We've previously worked with the suppliers that will handle the print runs for the graphics and the instructions tags and they are on standby ready to proceed if we are successful in meeting our fundraising goal. Lea has already completed the ingredient illustrations and instructions tag design, and they are beautiful!
Risk #2: Execution, Timing, and Shipping
We've successfully completed two (2) prior Kickstarter projects - "Seed Money" and "Retro Punch Boxes" - both of which involved multiple materials, suppliers, and hand assembly tasks. In the case of Seed Money, we delivered rewards to more than 1,000 backers. We'd love to do it again with Chai Dice!
