UPDATE (5/2/12): We have just surpassed our goal! Big THANK YOU to our backers and generous supporters! Since we have a few more days left to raise more funding, we'd like to throw this out there: Whatever extra money we can raise over our initial $2000 goal, will be applied to our teen outreach program!
The Louisville Cartoonist Society would like to help inspire the next generation of local cartoonists. By working with Jefferson County Public Schools (Louisville, KY), local Community Centers, and libraries across Louisville, we can sponsor art classes and storytelling workshops with experienced members of our group and other local artists. Students nominated by their high school art teachers would attend a series of classes and lectures hosted by the LCS at no cost to them. Students would be assisted in developing their own comics and zines, and building connections among each other as a community of writers and artists. The project would culminate in the publication of an original anthology of local teen comics (maybe a future kickstarter project to get a book printed), with concurrent art shows at sites around Louisville, including the libraries. So we are basically talking about raising funding to pay for an instructor's time and art materials for a few workshops, with the future goal of raising enough money to eventually print and display the teen group's work. Let's do it!
Our Initial Goal:
The Louisville Cartoonist Society (LCS) is a Louisville, Kentucky-based independent comics group, formed in 2009 by a group of artists who all shared the same passion… making comics. The society members focus on sharing ideas, drawing panels together, critiquing each others’ work and the larger task of promoting and selling our own self-published books. We encourage the creation of new comics and help local artists connect to their audience. Our group is made up of amateur cartoonists and aspiring artists who all work *real* jobs, have families and stay up late drawing and creating comic books!
We are seeking funding to print our newest anthology collection of comic book stories, that features the work of 16 local creators. The anthology, entitled "The Future", features stories of science fiction and futuristic themes. It will have a full color cover and black-and-white interior pages. Our cover illustration was created by up-and-coming artist all-star, Alex Wilson (recently illustrated 3 "John Carter" book covers for Disney, now in their second printing). All funds raised will go toward the printing costs, distribution and promotion of the book online, at local comic book-related shows and various art festivals and events in Louisville, KY and surrounding areas.

The LCS has also started a youth outreach program, to help encourage young comic book artists to create and collaborate with other like-minded individuals. If we can get our book funded and off to the printers, we'd like to use any additional funds to help grow the youth program... more details on that once we get the Future book out the door!
