About this project
After five years and over 200 screenings and multimedia events, the Long Beach Cinematheque is excited to announce our greatest project yet - the opening of a new arthouse theatre in Santa Ana, The Frida Cinema!
We'll be applying our renown spirit of community collaboration and innovative programming into a two-screen, 650-seat cinema in the heart of downtown Santa Ana's cradle of art and culture, and already have some exciting screening and events on the horizon:
* The 4th Annual OC Film Fiesta
* The Southern California premiere of Valo5.
* The Orange County premiere of the South Eastern European Film Festival (SEEFest)
* And the return of our popular midnight series, Mondo Midnights!
Of course, we won't stop there! We're already working with educational organizations, film societies, event and art curators, and community leaders in exploring programming and series ideas, and welcome anyone to reach out and share their ideas and vision for a community arthouse with us. Our aim is to be experimental, creative, and free with our programming, and we are so extremely excited about the flexibility that having two auditoriums will provide.
In order to make this vision come true, we are reaching out to our fellow lovers of film, art, and community in our effort to obtain a digital projector for The Frida. The theatre currently houses two 35mm projectors, and don't worry - we'll be keeping both of them, and using them to screen films on classic 35mm as often as we can! But as our mission is to screen student, independent, festival, foreign, documentary, and other such films that are often only available digitally, a digital projector is integral to that vision.
We have lined up an assortment of goodies for our Kickstarter supporters, all of which are tailored for people who love cinema as much as we do (and popcorn and soda lovers, too!). Please watch our video, learn a little about our history and our mission, and support our cause!
Thanks for reading, and keep watching!

Risks and challenges
We are extremely fortunate to be moving into a space that has been screening first-run films, so there's no need for a major closure or construction. Our digital projector will complement the 35mm system that is already in place, and should our project fund, we have been assured that our digital installation should be complete in time for us to have our Grand Opening as scheduled in early September, 2013!
Should we collect any funds above and beyond what is needed for the digital projector, they will be applied in full towards upgrading and beautifying The Frida.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
No! This is an Expansion, not an Exodus!
The Cinematheque will continue to program diverse multimedia events for the Long Beach community, and continues to foster new relationships with Long Beach organizations in the effort to launch exciting new collaborative projects! This year we are excited to announce two new event partners - Friends of Bixby Park, and University Art Museum at CSU Long Beach - and together we will be bringing the Outdoor Cinema experience to venues throughout the city. The Guts & Bolts Short Films Festival is an exciting new project in partnership with Toaster Music and the Arts Council for Long Beach, and will bring short films to the HOPA district this September. And of course, our Long Beach Zombie Walk will return this October!
Whereas The Frida needs a digital projector first and foremost to serve an arthouse audience, it needs SO much more. We have some pretty lofty dreams for the cinema, and your continued support will be matched by our continued resolve to make it a premiere destination for lovers of cinema. Every dollar raised on this Kickstarter campaign will be dedicated to the improvement, management, and/or programming of The Frida Cinema.
That would be the most awesome Hong Conner Che. Thanks Hong!
