Our Kickstarter may be over, but you can still play the game at extrasolar.com!
In Extrasolar you send directions from any Web-enabled device to a rover on another planet. But instead of stock, pre-generated imagery, your rover sends back photos of an incredibly realistic 3D landscape, complete with oceans, weather, and an ever-changing time of day. Each is completely unique, and looks something like this:
Extrasolar isn't just a game -- it's an entirely new way to experience a story. That's a big claim to make, but if you're skeptical, you can play it yourself, right now, for free. And we're not the only ones who think we've created something remarkable.
The story thus far
Extrasolar is about more than just exploring a new planet, there’s also a dramatic story of mystery, conspiracy, and scientific discovery that unfolds while you play. Everything takes place over the Web -- through written messages, live action videos, websites, terminal systems, and a custom interface for directing your rover and analyzing the photos that it takes.
For Extrasolar season 2, we want to invite you to play an even bigger role in the project's development! We always intended for the story of Extrasolar to continue beyond season 1. Our own funds have gotten us this far, but we need your help to complete this vision.
It may seem strange for us to be here on Kickstarter even though we've already launched an award-winning game. Initially, we set up Extrasolar such that the first season is free with optional upgrades for an expanded experience. Quite a few players choose to upgrade their season 1 accounts, but it's barely enough to keep season 1 up and running -- nowhere near enough to fund development of new content.
Kickstarter is the perfect fit. It gives us a chance to let you, our fans, play a more active role in the game’s development, and it allows us to finish the three-season story arc we always planned.
What will be new?
Extrasolar season 2 will take place on an entirely new island -- an all new landscape, biosphere, and new lifeforms to discover. Season 1 ended with several unsolved mysteries, and we have lots to reveal about their origins and more questions to explore about the history of Epsilon Prime. We'll be continuing the stories of the characters from season 1 and introduce some new characters as well.
Like season 1, season 2 will have about a month’s worth of new content, if not more.
Who we are
The Extrasolar team is made up of a dedicated group of seasoned developers. We’re experienced industry veterans with a lot of games under our collective belts. You may recognize our studio name from our previous indie hit Cogs or the Bioshock Infinite tie-in game, Bioshock Infinite: Industrial Revolution.
We have a high standard of quality which has earned us awards and success in the past.
Entertain, inspire, educate
To our small team, Extrasolar isn't just a game. This is an opportunity to inspire. Yes, Extrasolar is a story about conspiracy and secrets, but it's built on science to the very foundation.
If you've read our studio blog, then you may already know that Jane Van Susteren, the biologist who sends you messages in Extrasolar season 1, is actually a real person. After all, what better way to inspire young scientists than to write characters based on real scientists?
Though we designed Extrasolar for a broad audience, it’s a hope of ours to inspire the next generation by putting them in the shoes of a planetary explorer. We like to think of Extrasolar as the Oregon Trail for our generation. We believe in this so strongly that we've even launched a special educational version of the game on the Edmodo platform.
Notes on Rewards & Schedule
Extrasolar is platform independent. Practically any device can play it as long as it has a web browser. No downloads or plugins required.
We expect that season 2 development will take until summer of 2015, but don’t worry -- if our campaign is successful, we’ll send you your account upgrade codes within 2 weeks of the end of the campaign. You’ll be able to use your code to immediately upgrade a season 1 account to a premium tier, giving you more abilities and shorter wait times than the normal, free version. If you pledge at $15/20 or more, season 2 will be immediately available on your account upon release.
If you can’t wait that long, or want to help with the campaign but have already upgraded your season 1 account, no worries -- all of the codes that we send out will be gift-able.
There will be no free version of Extrasolar season 2. The only way to play Season 2 will be to pledge to this Kickstarter, right now, or pay through the in-game UI when Season 2 is released.

We have such a tough time describing Extrasolar to new players, that we often find it easier to let our current players do the talking. Here are a few excerpts from the press and testimonials from fans.
"This narrative element was brilliantly sprung on me, involving me in the game before I was even in the game, so to speak." —Killscreen
"So, a clever thing happened before I’d even started playing the game..." —Rock, Paper, Shotgun
"...they don't want to just immerse you in another world, they want to overlap it with your everyday reality." —NextPowerUp
"...it feels like you might actually be vicariously wandering a new world, uncovering a place no human eyes have ever seen." —GameFront
"It's not really like anything I've played before... it's pretty much the highest compliment." —Salle Pierre Lamy
"It is not often I get to say this, but Extrasolar is something genuinely new in the video game world. A different pace, story, interaction... different everything. It is so new and strange it is difficult to know how to describe it." —@jim_unwin
"Extrasolar is the kind of game there should be more of. It takes a simple idea -- science drones on an alien world -- and develops it perfectly. It's not a familiar game with an alien-planet theme; it's the mechanics and interface that the idea needed. It's an experience you haven't had before. It's also, by the way, completely gorgeous." —Zarf
"Extrasolar is an experience of exploration and imagination. Your rover has just landed on a new world, and you're sending it out to explore this new planet... What is that in the distance? If you find the Mars rover missions exciting, give Extrasolar a try. It's unlike anything else, and it had me hooked for over a month." -- fartheststar
Legal tax stuff about the $55 and $75 tiers: Since EIS and NSS are non-profits, if you back at the $55 level, then $20 of the purchase that will go to EIS is tax deductible. At the $75 tier, $27.50 of the combined EIS/NSS transaction is tax deductible.
Risks and challenges
Pioneering a new game genre is hard! Thankfully we already have the most challenging pieces in place and we have a pretty good idea of what to expect.
The toughest challenge will simply be staying on schedule and on budget. With the budget we're asking for, we're confident that we can create a story experience that is on par with, if not better than season 1. If we surpass our goal, every extra dollar means that we can add that much more polish -- more species, more lovingly crafted scenery, more time with our actors, and more features.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
