Breaking Barriers & Enhancing Unity: A project to increase love & understanding among all Jews through the power of music and song.
A Couple Practical Points: 1. Donations to this project are tax deductible in the USA (Kumah is a 501c3). 2. Credit cards are never charged until we reach our total goal. 3. Reward examples are shown below.
THE HA'AM SHELI (MY PEOPLE) STORY
Israeli guitarist singer/songrwiter Lazer Lloyd wrote "Ha'am Sheli (My People)" and performed it to create the Jewish Unity Project video with guests Shlomo Katz, Aaron Razel, Gad Elbaz, and Naftai Kalfa. The video has just passed 280,000 views after the first week.
Lazer together with nonprofit Kumah have launched this Kickstarter Campaign to take the song around the world to break barriers, share the knowledge that every Jew is precious, and enhance Jewish unity with LIVE JEWISH UNITY CONCERTS that will be filmed and made into a DVD with highlights of the live events, the original video, behind the scenes footage, photos, and music, to spread the ripples of Jewish Unity and create memories for a lifetime.
Lazer says, "I try to bring people together that I meet all over the Jewish world. Words like "ultra-orthodox" and "secular" are an obstacle to the Jewish people getting to know each other. They are descriptive but create walls between people. One of our closest held beliefs is that a Jew is a Jew period. I use music as a way to build bridges and create new relationships."
A generous sponsor financed the cost of recording at SuperSonic Studios in Jerusalem with Lazer on electric guitar and vocal, plus the great voices of Gad Elbaz, Shlomo Katz, Naftali Kalfa, and Aaron Razel, a full band with string section (composed and arranged by Aaron Razel). The song was mixed and engineered by Amit Golan at SuperSonic studios. The video was produced and directed by Ora-le-Nehora productions TV and Film pro Eldad Eilat (videography and editing by Yoav Landau and production manager Tal Cohen). The video takes the viewer on a moving journey to meet the real folks that make up the loving face of the Jewish people.
QUESTION: How will a song, "Ha'am Sheli" (My People), heal divisions and conflict between the Jewish people?
STEP #1: When people gather in an effort to dispel sources of tension between them, nothing smooths the way like music and laughter. Lazer Lloyd and Kumah (an international non-profit organizing this campaign) bring together diverse audiences at "Ha'am Sheli" (My People) Jewish unity events in Israel and beyond.
Lazer Lloyd will lead these events with diverse Jewish guest musicians performing "Ha'am Sheli" (My People) together with a full program blending musical styles, traditions, and stories on one stage, involving the audience in singing and discussion, and show the special "Ha'am Sheli" video (which has subtitles in 5 languages to use for different audiences). Each event will be followed by a reception with refreshments to encourage dialogue and new friendship.
The song "Ha'am Sheli" will be played on TV and radio in Israel (from religious to secular stations) starting in mid-October (Cheshvan) via a campaign conducted by an Israeli PR firm in Hebrew and funded by a generous donor. Outside Israel, people will hear about the song and see the video as a part of the lead up to the live "Ha'am Sheli (My People)" events later this winter and into the spring.
Our basic goal of $18,000 will make it possible to produce and promote live events in Israel, the USA, Russia, and Canada. One of our stretch goals - meaning we raise more than $18,000 - will allow us to take "Ha'am Sheli" live events to Europe and Australia.
STEP #2: We will produce a "Ha'am Sheli Live" DVD using video highlights from the events series described above, plus the full "Ha'am Sheli" original video, behind the scenes footage, music and photos. The DVD will make it possible to share the joy and unity experienced during the live event series with the largest possible audience to generate additional ripples of inspiration for Jewish unity.
QUESTION: WHAT WILL THIS CAMPAIGN FUND?
The objective of this Kickstarter Campaign is to pay for some of the many costs of producing and promoting the "Ha'am Sheli" (My People) live musical events series. Costs include: international and in-country travel, sound equipment, venue costs, graphic art and printing, advertising "Ha'am Sheli" live events in major Jewish media outlets, and video and camera work to capture live event footage, and post-production of the "Ha'am Sheli Live" DVD (editing the video, designing and pressing DVDs, covers etc).
The funding raised will make "Ha'am Sheli (My People)" live events affordable to hosting communities and campuses but "Ha'am Sheli" event hosts will also pay a portion of the costs. Everyone involved, local hosts, local Jewish media, visiting event presenters, and guests, will participate in organizing the event and making it a success, that is part of making unity real. Yocheved Seidman, the Chief Operating Officer of the Kumah non-profit running this campaign, will manage the musical live event arrangements to ensure diverse participation in each location.
The first round of musical events will take place during the winter season in Jewish communities and on campuses in Israel, the United States (in Boston, New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Miami), and in Moscow, Russia. In the spring and summer of 2014 (5774) "Ha'am Sheli" (My People) events will be held in New York and New Jersey, California, Florida, Washington DC, and Canada. If we exceed our goal of $18,000 we will add more cities and also add on European and Australian cities.
Production of the "Ha'am Sheli Live" DVD will take place after the concert series is completed and will be ready for distribution at the beginning of 5775 (2014/2015) during the yom tov (high holiday) season (Tishrei). This will allow for maximum impact of the entire "Ha'am Sheli" project by conducting events throughout the year, building excitement from the events and news about them, and finally gathering the highlights into the DVD and distributing it with media coverage during the peak period when people are looking for inspiring Jewish content.
WHY LAZER LLOYD?
The natural leader for a musical unity project based on live events is a musical, story telling ambassador singing and traveling between the sometimes conflicting parts of the Jewish people, seeing the beauty of all and seeking to connect them to each other. Lazer Lloyd fits that bill perfectly.
Interacting with different groups of Jews, creating new relationships, conducting dialogue, and dispelling misperceptions comes naturally to Lazer. He currently lives in the heart of Beit Shemesh (an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in Israel) but he grew up in a different world, forming and playing in rock bands along the Connecticut shore. Lazer earned a degree in music at Skidmore College and his hard work and natural talent earned him a contract with Atlantic Records.
An encounter with inspirational musical Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach changed Lazer's life and convinced him to move to Israel. Lazer met and married Elana, the daughter of a traditional Jewish Moroccan family living in Yavneh, Israel. Lazer spent his first years after marriage selling watermelons with his father-in-law and connecting to the people in his new community.
As he started a music career in his new country, his family, neighbors, and performances put him in close touch with all sides of Israeli society and culture on a daily basis. Lazer continues to see all sides as he and his guitar play a packed schedule ranging from blues and rock at Israel's popular night clubs and outdoor festivals, to folk and meditative niggunim (Jewish tunes) at yeshivas, to studio guitar parts on records spanning the styles in the Israeli music industry. Adding to this experience, at home in Beit Shemesh, Lazer and some friends founded and grew a synagogue that welcomes people who have been aggressively negative to other Jews simply out of a lack of exposure to those beyond their group. The result has been overwhelmingly positive with new friendships dispelling fears and distrust.
"Ha'am Sheli" is one of a group of inspirational songs that Lazer has written that will be featured at live events along with music from guest performers. Here is another song from this group entitled "We Are All". And of course there will be dancing ...
Lazer asked our Kumah non-profit (founded by CEO Yishai Fleisher who manages Kumah together with COO Yocheved Seidman) to work with him to build a unity through music project based on live events. We thought this was a great natural partnership because the "Ha'am Sheli" (My People) Project draws on Kumah's extensive experience:
- Creating all sorts of live events with a focus on opening the hearts and minds of a diverse Jewish audience to new ideas and new relationships;
- Producing video from start to finished product, a skill set needed to produce a "Ha'am Sheli Live" DVD using footage from the live musical events; and
- Conducting a similar music project through the Aliyah Revolution CD and accompanying events to distribute the CD and discuss the ideas behind the music. The Aliyah Revolution CD even includes Lazer Lloyd on two songs and a song by Aaron Razel who sings on "Ha'am Sheli" and wrote the strings arrangement for the song.
We are proud to support this amazing inspiring work as part of the Kumah mission to connect the Jewish people to their heritage and their history. A key part of that connection is getting to know and love all the different shapes and sizes of our own people. We cannot do it without you! Your support for this project, both financial and using all of your communication skills, will make sure the Jewish people and their friends everywhere hear that love song to them. A great love song not only melts the hearts of the one who is loved but everyone else who hears it, let's get to work and spread light and love together.
Kumah is a 501c3 nonprofit in the United States and donations made by Americans to this project are tax deductible in the United States. If we do not meet our $18,000 goal your credit card will not be charged. Also, you will not be charged until the entire campaign is completed and we are successful! With your help we will go way beyond the goal which has been set to be the minimum necessary to complete the project.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
First, live events are complicated. Our challenge is producing smoothly run, well attended events with the diverse audience we need to reach for project success. We have addressed this by bringing together a very experienced live performer who has appeal with all parts of the Jewish spectrum (Lazer Lloyd) with an experienced Jewish events organizer (Yocheved Seidman for Kumah). Events will be organized to ensure maximum diversity and community participation.
Second, video and camera work at the live events is an area where plenty can go wrong and mistakes can never be fixed because the moment has passed. This aspect of the "Ha'am Sheli" project will be handled by professionals (including some work as a donation to the project and some paid for by the project) and doubled by experienced volunteers with good quality equipment to ensure that the footage needed will be captured with high quality sound. This will ensure that the "Ha'am Sheli Live" DVD will look and sound great and provide an inspiring experience ultimately enhancing Jewish unity.
Third, launching a unity project with the theme song in Hebrew has some risks because not everyone speaks Hebrew among the Jewish people. One step we have taken to address the risk is to organize volunteers to translate the song into Russian, Spanish, French, English, and Portuguese. All of these languages now are displayed on the song video as sub-titles. So a large portion of the listeners around the world can hear the song and see the translation of the lyrics right on the screen. Second, special musical events will be held in different countries including Jewish musicians who speak and sing in different languages. So the experience of the Ha'am Sheli (My People) Project will be multi-lingual and will get everyone involved in his/her own language while relating back to Hebrew (the mother tongue of the Jewish people) on the original recording of the theme song.
