About

What is this?

Bad Tattoo is a simple party game of drawing bad ideas badly where the worst, ugliest, dumbest, and most disturbing, works of "Art" are the point.

Do your stick figures look like a random spray of body fluid?
This game is for you.

Can you draw a spray of body fluid in the shape of a person?
This game is for you.

Are you sarcastic and/or evil?
This game is for you.

This is Bad Tattoo. The game that turns your horrible works of “Art” into the life of the party.

It's a sexy battleship.
It's a sexy battleship.

Introduction

Don't you hate it when your friends to decide to play a party game and then SOMEBODY always insists on playing Pictionary or some other dumb drawing game - and then suddenly you feel like giving up before you even started because YOU CAN'T DRAW and everyone will just make fun of you and say things like "What is THAT supposed to be?" and you're like "it's George Washington." and they're like "What is he doing to that giraffe?"

This is your game.

Concept

Bad Tattoo is proudly a derivative game. Imagine introducing Telestrations to Cards Against Humanity – then add some tequila and a broken condom and you get this game. It is a simple game of drawing bad ideas badly based on cards where the worst, dumbest, most disturbing, least rational, most unfortunately memorable, works of “Art” are the entire point. “Winners” aren’t made so much as they are chosen by other players... and every use of the terms “Art” and “Winner” is pretty much sarcastic.

Basic Mechanics

Absolutely NO DRAWING SKILLS are required – it actually works best if no one has them or any who do are hindered or inebriated or both.

  • Players: 1 – Infinity (Really.)
  • Time: 15-30 minutes (or forever)
  • Ages: 12+ (with 18+ expansions)

Every player takes turns being a tattoo Client who draws cards with random combinations of Noun Cards and Adjective Cards describing a tattoo that can’t POSSIBLY turn out right – oh, and they’ll also be randomly selecting the body part it goes on from Skin Cards.

EXAMPLE: “I’d like a FLACCID APPLE on my FACE.”

Then all the other players act as “Artists” and attempt to draw this horrific monstrosity. The Client then chooses their favorite and keeps it for scoring at the end of the game and gives the Noun and Adjective Cards to the “Winning” Artist.

When all body parts have been tatted – players can “Win” one of two ways. The players compare the collection of worst tattoos and vote on which Client “Wins” and needs to be placed in the museum of Terrible Tats. The Artist with the most cards “Wins” (ties broken by the “Winning Client”).

Absolutely NO DRAWING SKILLS are required. The point is to not only draw badly – but also do so in a way that completely entertains the "Client". Maybe that particular "Client” loves penises on everything, no matter what the cards say – then you have an inside track on making them happy and “winning”.

Really – there are no losers... except maybe that one player who actually gets one of these Bad Tattoos permanently applied for some reason.

What’s Special About This Game?

Games like Apples to Apples and CAH are extremely popular. Games like Pictionary, Telestrations, Oodles of Doodles, etc. are also very popular. This game takes the best qualities of both themes, by combining edgy humor and non-competitive play with free form expression to make the ultimate party game.

Humorous and friendly, the game has an automatic appeal to artistic people without trying – but the point of the game is to draw badly.... Very badly. Countless people have tried to draw something that inspired them only to have it come out wrong and hilarious. This game celebrates those glorious failures. So consumers with an “I don’t draw” attitude will still enjoy it because they can have fun drawing as someone else. It’s not really “them” as the bad Artist – it’s Butterguts or Old English or Shakey. (Probably Shakey. It’s always Shakey’s fault.)

Best of all – anyone can “Win” simply by giving up on trying to be better than everyone else. It’s art – and art can’t be wrong.... Unless it is just wrong. Really wrong.

Who Am I?

Hello, my name is Lazarus Chernik. You might already know me from many other successful projects on Kickstarter for other people but now this one is my baby.

I've been in the advertising and publishing field for 20 years. I've produced award winning artwork and products for Fortune 500 companies (e.g., WB, American Airlines, GE, Lennar, etc.) as well as products for popular game companies like Catalyst and Calliope Games (e.g., Roll For It! Deluxe and Gen Con Editions). I've been around game publishing for 30 years and after working on everyone else products - I finally have a chance to produce my own.

Bad Tattoo is the first game I intend to publish under the Black Piece Games moniker. Our games will be fun. Really, there is no other criteria. Why do anything if it isn't fun, right?

The Cover

The theme of the game is to have fun with art – no matter how good or bad we think we are at it. The cover sums that up. It’s a well drawn but humorous cartoon of a tattoo scene with additional magnificent and really screwed up elements opposed to each other.

The client has big (often unreachable) dreams of the epic glory that will be their body upon completion – but the artist just “doesn’t get it” and warps those dreams into a nightmare – and hilarious results become: “What the hell is that supposed to be?”

The Cards (Not Final Art)

The cards are inspiring but also non-threatening. The card backs will be illustrated to reflect some the most common typefaces and treatments in tattoos. The cards faces for the noun and adjective cards are clean, legible, and play smoothly. The Skin cards are more complicated because they represent more than the body part mentioned – they form the canvas for the artist – and so incorporate an illustration of the appropriate body part. Whole the original idea of Cartoony body parts is still being considered, play- testing suggested that the more beautiful the rendering of a body part – the more intimidated some artists were as the felt that they were going to be judged by how their art looked in relation to how well the body part was professionally drawn. To ease that – and to add more humor to the game – the body parts will be professionally drawn so badly that nearly everyone will think they could do better... or at least not make it look worse.

Not final art. I'm sure you can do better, right?
Not final art. I'm sure you can do better, right?

The Characters

The characters will be printed on custom cut cardboard (double sided). They are illustrated in a cartoon style that will reflect their personalities. The artists may choose to ignore those personalities or develop their own without impunity – they may even create their own or simply represent themselves.

"Scratcher"
"Scratcher"
  • Scratcher (Male: “I’m the baddest there is, Jefe.”)
  • Babe (Female: "But you’ll still tip me cuz I’m cute, right?”)
  • South Paw (Male: “I only use natural inks – like cayenne and chipotle.”)
  • Butterguts (Female: “I’m gonna puke!”)
  • Old English (Male “¿Como?”)
  • Blinky (Female: “I was out so late last nizzzzz.”)
  • Shakey (Male: “ThisisgoingtobegreatbecauseIjustchuggedadoubleventicafecito!”)
  • and Bloody Mary (Female: “I’m not stabbing, I’m stippling.”)

In reality, the characters are not part of the mechanic at all – they are merely a gateway to roleplaying and a shield for players more fearful of being judged via Metagaming.
