LOOP is a new interdisciplinary performance that examines the unique alchemy of collaboration between myself, dance artist, musician and choreographer, Laurel Snyder, dance artist Emma Judkins and musician and composer Adam Schatz. Using movement, voice, saxophone, microphones, synths, samplers, loopers and a variety of other sound-making devices, we continuously devise original physical and musical scores live in performance, resulting in a completely spontaneous set of occurrences.

I am excited to work with the folks at The Footlight in Ridgewood, Queens, to bring my work to their intimate space. The performances will take place November 30-December 2, 2018 at 7:45pm, with a DJ set following each night. 

Why Now?

This work presents a serious turning point for me and my artistic growth, as it is my first experience self-producing an evening-length work. I have spent many years honing a practice combining voice and the body, but haven’t yet been able to activate how those physicalities play out with others in an improvisational framework. LOOP presents the opportunity for me, Emma and Adam to not only work in continuously shifting collaboration, but also to create distinct relationships with our audiences.  

What We're Doing

In this project we are using repetition, harmony and layering as tools for evolution and synergy across disciplines. I believe there is incredible value in this form of layered expression. It not only prevents the performers from being pigeon-holed into one artistic category, but also reveals the true ever-evolving nature of humanity and our reliance on contact and feedback from our fellow man in order to continue that process. 

In a more theoretical sense, LOOP carries with it ideas on the self and other, and how those understandings manifest in circular ways. When alone, cyclical thinking for example can be dangerous, leading to stress or a distorted sense of self, but devising a variety of circular patterns in collaboration with other individuals inspires growth, change, reflection and ultimately a sense of community. 

While each community as a whole may look different or hold varying beliefs, there is an underlying sense of agreement, trust, support and willingness to compromise. All of these factors ring true in collaboration as well…

Who I Am

A bit more about me? 

I strive to generate a symbiotic relationship between movement and voice, utilizing one medium to release the other in a method I call embodied songwriting. Rather than compose melody, lyric and movement separately, I vocalize in motion, allowing my body to shape the character and rhythm of the song and in turn, the quality of the song invigorates my physical choices. The rich aural and physical result of this practice provides a wealth of choreographic material to work with; be it transposing songs to instruments or solely performing the accompanying movement. I record these vocal experiments, supplement them with collected personal recordings, and create unique sound designs to interact with in live performance. 

I am a dance artist, educator and musician based in NYC. Since graduating from Tisch at NYU in 2009, I have performed with artists Faye Driscoll, Tere O’Connor, Tatyana Tenenbaum and Kendra Portier at NYC venues such as BAM, the Chocolate Factory, Danspace Project, and the Kitchen. My choreography has been presented most recently by Triskelion Arts, Center for Performance Research (CPR), Chez Bushwick, Movement Research at Judson Church and the Tank. I have been an artist-in-residence at the Denmark Arts Center (ME), EarthDance (MA), Threes Brewing (NYC), Dragon’s Egg (CT), The Living Room (ME) and was a recipient of Exploring the Metropolis' 2017 Choreographer+Composer Residency and the 2018 Queens Council for the Arts New Work Grant, where I was able to develop the early stages of LOOP.  I am hugely passionate about teaching movement and vocal practices. In addition to my current work as an adjunct professor at Rutgers University, I have been invited by local and international organizations such as Colby College, Leviathan Studios (British Columbia), Gibney Dance and Dance Exchange as a guest teaching artist.  I have also acted as a vocal consultant for choreographers Nadia Tykulsker and Ivy Baldwin.

Creative Team

I am working with Adam Schatz (performer) and Emma Judkins (performer). Both artists have been longtime collaborators and dear friends. The performance couldn’t exist without the ways in which we find joy, conflict, challenge, and relief in our collaborative developments. This process has allowed us to grow our trust in each other in order to push past our previous artistic categorization and discern a new skillset. There is bliss in discovering our commonalities; negotiation in disagreement; and the question of compromise that keeps LOOP growing and able to discover new things with each performer. 

Each collaborator is an experienced performer in his or her own right. I am super lucky to work with Emma and Adam to locate newfound ways of creative negotiation and giving in to the stickiness of live performance.

Risks and challenges

LOOP presents a unique set of risks and challenges in live performance. Its pure improvisatory nature, coupled with the expectations it places on its performers to straddle medium, imagery, form, narrative, and physicality leaves much room for failures and flatness.

Furthermore, the existence and interaction of an audience creates a crucial, and ethereal, layer of this performance. There is great importance not only on the presence of an audience, but on their ability to engage with LOOP explicitly and fully.

My hope is that our collaboration, one that values acceptance, listening, questioning and compassion models a community that we wish to uphold. We embrace ‘not knowing’ as a way to ‘know’ something else. This is a risky proposition, but one that a work like LOOP is prepared to enact.
