Welcome! We are the Mint Julep Jazz Band, a Durham, NC-based hot jazz and swing little big band, made up of 8 musicians who love performing the music of the 1920's, 30's, and early 40's for dancing and listening audiences alike. The focus of our band is performing swing dance music and we'd like to release a second album of tunes that will make you want to swing out!
Why Kickstarter? Think of it as pre-sales - you are essentially ordering this album in advance.
We heard lots of positive feedback on our first album of classic swing and hot jazz (check it out at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/mintjulepjazzband); we heard you wanted us to perform at your local/regional/national swing dance event and we have seen you at these events dancing up a storm; we heard you wanted a second album ASAP because you had already worn out the first album listening to it on repeat in your car. We love you all and that's why we're excited about doing another album!
The album, which will be titled "Battle Axe," will feature Lucian Cobb on trombone, Paul Rogers on trumpet, Keenan McKenzie on tenor saxophone and clarinet, Aaron Hill on alto saxophone and clarinet, Aaron Tucker on drums, Jason Foureman on bass, Ben Lassiter on guitar, and Laura Windley on vocals.
Battle Axe is a Jimmie Lunceford tune featured in our book and we are excited about the possibilities of where this theme can go...expect some previously unrecorded favorites to be included in the album, as well as some surprises!
We love you madly!
We could never do this on our own, which is why we are so amazed that you backed our last Kickstarter and and helped us reach our funding goal. We'd like to do it all over again, just for you, to deliver up some great swinging music for your dancing feet and your listening ears!

Stretch goal: vinyl
If we reach a stretch goal of $16,000, we will produce the album on vinyl! If you back our Kickstarter and we reach the stretch goal, we will give all of our backers the option to purchase the vinyl copy at cost. That's only $4,000 over our initial goal to get vinyl copies!
Rewards are awesome!
We've added some great rewards and are revisiting a few from the last Kickstarter - here's some more detail on our rewards that may require photos or more explanation:
HAND-MADE APRON - These aprons are crazy adorable - hand-made apron (1/2 apron that just ties around your waist and hangs from your waist, no bib for the chest), inspired by vintage apron designs and made from reproduction 1930's cloth printed with gray/taupe kittens talking on yellow telephones, sewn by our vocalist Laura Windley's mother, Gayle Windley. Y'ALL - KITTENS TALKING ON YELLOW TELEPHONES!
ORCHID FASCINATOR - This is a seriously gorgeous tilt fascinator made by ChatterBlossom - the fascinator is identical to one owned by vocalist Laura Windley, and is made from reclaimed vintage millinery flowers from the 1950's, in lovely mint green and white/ivory, with a woven ivory base. There are only two of these in existence - Laura has one, but who will claim the other? Let's be lovely together.
CARNATION FASCINATOR - This is a really special fascinator made by ChatterBlossom from late 1920's/early 1930's lavender carnations, very rare by any standards, especially for unused millinery - the fascinator is identical to one owned by vocalist Laura Windley in lovely shades of lavender. There are only three of these in existence - ChatterBlossom has one, Laura has one, and no others will be made because ChatterBlossom has no more of this type of flower.
Risks and challenges
If we are not able to reach our funding goal, we will not receive the money that has been pledged. This means there will be no CD and we will have to figure out if this is the right time for us to record and if a CD is a financially viable option for us.
If we are funded, there are other challenges. There could certainly be delays, since we are using a lot of different services and contractors to produce our CD - this is a multi-step process with lots of components that have to come together to deliver a completed CD project. There could be issues with the recording quality and it may not sound as good as we would like to it sound. There are any number of unforeseen costs. There could be licensing issues that may arise, as we are not performing original music.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
