Laughing Mother's goal is education through empowerment. We believe in our own capacity to provide for each other through accountability and responsibility.
The farm will be the site of workshops and intensive food production geared towards charitable organizations and low income community members.
As an all volunteer staff, we hope to cultivate the space necessary to maintain a healthy and productive collective of farmers and activists; working together to assess our local needs from many viewpoints and collaborate towards their fulfillment.
The initial donation of capital needed to begin this project will greatly relieve the financial burden on the farmers, allowing more time and energy for production and organization.
The 3,000 dollars will allow us to build a fence to maintain pasture/ production space separation, build a greenhouse in which compost can be produced year round in addition to vegetables, and a tool library which can be used to facilitate large work parties, all benefiting our community at large.
Powered by hands alone, this land will rely on perennial design and extensive volunteer participation to one day become a low maintenance, high production farm.
As an enterprise we have already received an overwhelming amount of community support and direction. We hope to take these gifts and do justice the power and potential of people.
Risks and challenges
We face a number of hurdles.
We are renting the land, and as such have a four year lease (which will be renewed barring catastrophe). However, the project has always entailed organic expansion into the community to create a more vibrant and resilient local foodscape which is not contingent upon one central space.
We are very young farmers. Though laughably foolish at times, our core team of volunteers is supported by a very strong and knowledgeable community of elders who help guide us in the right direction.
We are volunteers. Though there will obviously be many perks to being volunteer staff, there will be no end to the amount of work and no beginning to the amount of riches. As a collective of individuals we have come to terms with the realities of holding multiple jobs, working long hours, and getting little in return, but now we are free farmers looking to exercise our right to a dignified and realistic relation to the land and each other.
Too much support. In the event of literally overwhelming support we are prepared to help in the cultivation of these spaces in perpetuity. It is time to do what we all know is right, take care of each other.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
