I'm trying to raise $40,000 in order to qualify for a national rollout of my film, The Last Ring Home, on public television stations in May 2017 (on Memorial Day). By creating this documentary and writing the eponymous book, I hope this film can stimulate an international quest for the ring's return.
For the past 25 years, I've been on a mission to find out about my grandfather after whom I was named and who gave his life in WWII. The more I found out about it, the more I felt a pressing need to share his story I discovered a whole chapter of WWII that is barely discussed in history classes in the US, much less around the world, or more poignantly in Japan. Specifically, it concerns what happened to the troops and civilians who were caught up in the Japanese invasion in the Philippines, where 42% of the US POWs were killed in captivity. There was much horror, and yet some incredible stories of bravery and camaraderie. But, the real magic of this story relates to my grandfather's Annapolis ring, the last object he touched before dying. It is a ring that traveled 40,000 miles and exchanged hands 6 times before coming back to my grandmother. But, there was a final twist and the ring again disappeared. I hold out a rather fantastic hope that this film will help bring that ring back home. In these frenetic and rather worrying times, I am also hoping that with this film, we can help bring back a focus on that which is important in life, a focus back on foundational values: honor, courage and love.
The support provided will be going into a sponsorship package with Maryland Public Television (a PBS member station), who will assist in promoting the film to the 380 other public television stations in North America.*
Please look at the different donation levels below and give what you would feel comfortable with. Thanks for your support. Know that everyone who participates will get a mention on the program website.
Even if the ring is never found, I want to sustain the legacy of my grandfather and pay a tribute to all members of the Greatest Generation.
Forever in the search, Minter Dial
*Pending further agreements, Maryland Public Television will act as Presenting Station. NB No anonymous donations are permitted.
Risks and challenges
The full amount of money needed to be raised for the public television sponsoring station programme to get national coverage is a MINIMUM of $35,000. The delta between the amount raised here and the full programme is to be covered by corporate sponsorship. If I am not able to raise those funds, I will myself guarantee the delta. Ideally, I will not have to do so. But that would represent the only real risk to this project as MPT is fully on board with my approach and is excited about this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
