Last night in Sweden – The true story
SEK 355,019

Plenty of 'alternative facts’ about Sweden have been shared recently, most notably when, in February, Donald Trump mysteriously referred to ‘what happened last night in Sweden’ in a sinister tone. Many of the opinions being shared about Sweden in recent months are fuelled by ignorance or hidden agenda, and come from people who have never even been to Sweden.
We want to set the record straight – telling the true story of what really happened in Sweden last night.
To do this, we have gathered the best photographers in the country to document what happened. A collection of brilliant, award-winning photo-journalists, will be commissioned to document everyday life all over Sweden. Taking pictures on a series of days between 6pm and midnight, the photos will encapsulate true and candid Sweden, and all the little moments that rarely make the news.
A jury will then select the best images – which will be compiled and presented in a unique book, the first copy of which will be sent to Donald Trump himself.

About the book
This photojournalism book will be produced by Max Ström, Sweden’s premium publisher of photography books, and designed by the award-winning Patric Leo. The accompanying text will be written by well-credited Swedish journalists and two separate language editions of the book will be published (English and Swedish).
It is going to be a book that is both serious and emotional, as well as filled with a healthy dose of self-awareness…
• Extent: 144 pages
• Format: 21 x 24 cm (8,3 x 9,4 in)
• Approx 80 pictures
You can support the project by pre-ordering the book now. If you would like to contribute further to the project, you can pay a higher price in order to be included on a supporter list in the back of all copies of the book. You can order a collector's limited edition, a copy of which will be signed by all the published photographers (this edition is limited to 50 copies), and your name will also be published in the book together with the other supporters.
Goals
Funding goal
With your help, we will send out nearly one hundred photographers to document everyday life in Sweden. By doing so, we want to share a message of reality to the world, and of defiance to those who wish to misrepresent our country.
The first copy of the book will be sent directly to President Trump. We will also create a digital photo exhibition, for international distribution.
Stretch goals
SEK 150,000 Not only will President Trump get his copy – all members of the US Congress will receive their own personal copy. This support also covers packing and postage.
SEK 200,000 Every member of the European Parliament will receive their personal copy. This support also covers packing and postage.
SEK 350,000 A major traveling exhibition will be created, consisting of the very best images.
Why?
Because we think that lies should always be challenged (especially when they come from a sitting President!). Because we think that the people who live in Sweden are better equipped to tell the rest of the world what’s really happening here. Because we cherish everyday life, with all its nuances, challenges and happiness. Because we think this documentation can serve as an antidote to the mainstream news agenda that reports on conflict, disaster, and celebrities. Finally – because we believe in the power of documentary photography!
About the organizers
The project is initiated and managed by the non-for profit foundation Expressions of Humankind (registered in Sweden, 802426-5772). The foundation has initiated and managed documentation projects like A Day in the World and 50 Ways to Save the Baltic.
Risks and challenges
We don't know what the outcome of each photographers assignment will be. But given the fact that so many award-winning photographers are participating, we are convinced the result will be magnificent. The selection of images is always a challenge - we fear that many darlings will have to be killed. On the other hand - the remaining images will be extraordinary!
