Last Epoch has a rich world and an engrossing story that is woven into every aspect of the game from environments to items and more. Throughout the story, you will travel to four distinct eras in time and see how each zone changes throughout the ages, each change bearing lore implications that will keep you invested in the setting.
Class identity is reflected in a variety of ways such as dialogue options, class-specific gear and visuals, flavorful skills, and passive grids. At a glance you’ll be able to tell that you are playing alongside a Primalist by seeing their signature animal hide helms and nature based attacks, just like how you’ll know recognize Void Knights by their enormous Void Blades, Necromancers by their armies of the undead, and so on. Each class has well defined themes expressed in both aesthetics and playstyle while still allowing for deep customization.
Through skill choices, ability trees, passive grids, and gear, each character will be a reflection of the player. Each player will have the opportunity to build their character exactly how they want it. We encourage out of the box thinking and experimentation. We give you all the tools to make a character that is truly your own!
Easy to learn, difficult to master. ARPGs are complex by nature and that’s part of what we love about them. Our goal is to make an ARPG that has mechanical depth, gives players lots to explore, while still being easy enough to pick up and learn.
The only Eterra you've known is a world of ruin, a world consumed by the Void. Humanity has been driven underground to escape the all-consuming darkness, destined to live out its final days in the subterranean city of Last Refuge. As one of the few survivors of able body and mind you have been given an impossible task, you must find the sole means of stopping this fate by rewriting the past. You must find the Epoch.
With the power of the Epoch, you will travel through Eterra's history and discover the truth of dark empires, be witness to the glory of long-dead gods, explore a wilderness unmarred by man, and discover the secret of the Void.
Will you dare to change fate once you discover its true nature? Take hold of your sword, ready your bow, summon your magic, and fight to become the hope of your world!
In Last Epoch you will see the story unfold across four distinct eras in time. The Ancient Era, a world unmarred by man, primal and wild. The Divine Era, an age of glory and strife where the gods have come to blows. The Imperial Era, where the dead hunt the living, unwavering in their desire to unite humanity under the Immortal Empire. Finally, the Ruined Era, where hope has been quelled under an infinite tide of Void. Every location will be made so you may visit them in each of these four eras, the changes in time communicated by the rise and fall of competing factions amid the shifting landscape of Eterra.
These eras are only the tip of the iceberg in exploring the possibilities in Eterra. Once you discover the Monolith of Fate you will have access to not only the four eras but countless alternate timelines that can branch from your choices.
Story is not the only way time travel has influenced our game design, certain item types and unique equipment will only be obtainable while in certain eras and even empower them through the mysterious Eternity Caches hidden throughout the world.
You’ll pick between five base classes that each advance into one of two mastery classes that will unlock new and powerful abilities. Characters in Last Epoch all have a deep backstory, are visually distinct, and have access to exclusive skills that can each be customized with their own augment tree. This, combined with our passive grid system creates an ideal toolbox for building characters that play how you want them to, without sacrificing their identity.
Your skills, more than anything else, is what determines the playstyle of your character. Unlike many games where you may use as many skills at a time as you have buttons for, we have elected to restrict players to having a maximum of five skills on their bar at any one time. While this may sound limiting, in practice this will result in a more engaging experience. When a Sorcerer chooses to place Meteor on their bar, this is a build defining decision that separates them from many other Sorcerers playing Last Epoch who have chosen different skills. Over the course of the game, your five skill slots will one by one gain the ability to augment the skills slotted into them by giving you access to the skill’s augment tree, unlocking a vast amount of customization potential. Every skill in Last Epoch will have its own fleshed out augment tree full of exciting ways to modify the skill for your playstyle, even offering unique branches only available to certain Mastery Classes!
With the Passive Grid system, you will be able to increase your character’s attributes and acquire special augments to your character. The Passive Grid of each class will have four lines on a grid, each line granting different stat increases such as increased health or increases to certain damage types. In addition to these stat lines, there will be augments with more impactful effects spread throughout the grid beyond these lines.
Each class will begin at the center of their Passive Grid, as you play you will gain the ability to advance along any of the four lines increasing your stats in your preferred manner. The true depth of the Passive Grid system is revealed once you elect to advance in multiple lines. Doing so creates a shape that connects the furthest points you have achieved along the stat lines, unlocking the various passive augments spread throughout the grid! The Passive Grid system allows for characters to have the opportunity to feel unique and tailored to your own playstyle - even for characters of similar builds and skills.
In Last Epoch, monsters will be memorable and distinct from each other. Certain monsters will spawn as rare versions of their type, with new abilities and attributes that make them more deadly and require a new strategy for their defeat. In addition to these, we want the base types of the monsters you face to be unique so that you're not just mowing down wave after wave of differently shaped enemies. You’ll remember when a Voidfire Husk teleports to you and explodes in your face. You’ll remember that to make Imperial Necromancers vulnerable you must destroy their Soul Cages first. When players encounter a new monster, it will be a new experience.
You will discover equipment and items that you can use to enhance your character with more powerful stats. Nearly every piece of equipment you will see will be different. When an item drops, the base type is randomized along with the number of stat modifiers, the type of stats that are modified, even the exact quality of each individual stat on the item. Between this level of item randomization and our gameplay changing Unique, Set, and Legendary items, there are untold ways to use equipment to customize your experience.
On your journey, you will find special items called Shattering Stones. These items will enable you to customize your gear in a nearly infinite amount of ways. When you use a Stone to shatter a magical item, you have the chance to gain shards, representing a random assortment of the item’s stat modifiers. With these shards, you can improve other items, increasing their power - but beware, the more you add shards to an item, the higher chance you have of causing it to fracture, damaging and potentially destroying the item! Other specialized items can be used to affect these odds, lowering the risk at the cost of potential gain, or raising the possibilities to untold heights with massive risk. With enough shards and luck, any item imaginable can be crafted!
In Last Epoch, you will see and engage with countless stories. From world-shattering champions to lowly orphans, each of these stories leaves its mark in the form of Lost Memories. You will find these Lost Memories in places that are important to the story of these individuals, and assemble them to gain unique benefits.
To illustrate this, let’s look at the Lost Memories that tell the story of Leonus Wyvernbane. You first learn of Leonus from battling the Legionaries of Rahyeh, one happens to drop a Sunspear of particular significance. This is a Lost Memory. This Memory will guide you to hunt the wyverns of the mountain. You go forth and slay one after the other until finally a Wyvern Tail drops, leaving you with one final Memory to track down. You are lead to a time after Legionnaires, where wyverns are long extinct. You track down an old woman willing to sell you a Venom-stained Death Shroud - her last heirloom from a long-forgotten ancestor. This last Memory completes the story.
Leonus Wyvernbane was a Legionnaire of Raheyh who favored coating his spear with the venom of wyverns: he took great pride in hunting them. Alas, that pride would be his downfall as the hunter became the hunted. With this Lost Memory assembled, you have unlocked the ability to strike with the deadly venom of a wyvern in addition to knowing a little more about the history of Eterra.
Hidden throughout the world are Eternity Caches, special containers with the unique quality of being immune to the changes of time around them. By placing an item within an Eternity Cache along with certain rare materials too potent for mundane crafting, a player may return to the same cache hundreds or even thousands of years later to retrieve the resulting synthesis. This is no easy task, for the Eternity Caches lie in places dark and forgotten - places exalted and under the watch of fierce guardians, or worse, places that may have attracted the attention of foes eager to snatch your treasure for themselves.
Player economy is one of the most enjoyable aspects of this genre for many players and we want to do it justice. Last Epoch will have a Bazaar system in which players will be able to anonymously buy and sell items from other players using the gold they've found on their adventures. We are designing this system very carefully to ensure that while the Bazaar can be a fantastic way to find certain items, it will never overshadow the rewards of engaging with the world yourself. Fear not, friends will be able to freely gift items between each other as long as they have been friends for a reasonable amount of time.
Travel through worlds that never were and times that could have been by exploring the Monolith of Fate. The Monolith has been obscured by the Void and it is up to you to rediscover all the possibilities of history and construct new timelines!
You start off with a single timeline zone, accessible via the Monolith, which lets you play through a new questline in the Ancient Era. Perhaps this questline has you participating in the war between the northern God Heorot and the rebellious tribes that follow his corrupted son. The normal series events would be that Heorot prevails and rules kindly over the humans of the north OR you could betray Heorot and side with his son and the rebel barbarians. This makes a new branch on the Monolith, an alternate timeline, and subsequently a new timeline zone and questline to visit.
When you finish this questline and make this choice, you’ve now unlocked an alternate timeline zone for the Divine Era. In this alternate timeline, instead of Heorot peacefully ruling the humans of the north, they are now ruled by his vicious son and hordes of his centaurs and satyrs are sweeping through the world. This new questline in this new alternate timeline would offer even more choices that result in even more alternate timelines, each successive branch growing in difficulty and offering greater rewards.
Travel back to the world of Eterra that you knew, even as its dangers rise to meet your newfound strength. Though the Gates of Memorium bring the recollection of your adventure to life, no memory is perfect, your memory and thus the version of Eterra you find yourself may become fearsome in ways you do not expect. Continue exploring Eterra but scaled to your level with the possibility of augmenting areas of the world to add new challenges and rewards as you search for rare items, Lost Memories, hidden quests, Eternity Caches, and more!
As you adventure through the different times of Eterra, the Epoch will guide you to sources of aberration in the timeline. Creatures that belong to another Era, places that should not exist, even other time travelers with goals less noble than yours. Correcting them will result in valuable rewards that will make you eager to hunt these anomalies down. Even as you explore the Monolith of Fate and traverse the Gates of Memorium, the Epoch will still beg you to heed its call!
We know that many people really want to either play offline or online and not having your preferred play mode available could make a game unplayable. We want you to be able to play the way you want and with the people you want. We are building Last Epoch with cooperative and competitive online multiplayer, offline single, and LAN support. Form a party of up to five players online to take down the biggest baddest monsters in the timeline or face the terrors alone. The online experience will be crafted to prevent cheating of all sorts.
Battle other players lost in the infinite pathways of time by entering the Time-Lost Colosseum. Engage in duels, 2v2, 3v3, 5v5, and free for all combat as you vie for dominance in an arena discarded and forgotten by reality, the perfect battleground for warriors with nothing to lose. Earn cosmetic rewards that flaunt your skill in battle and grow your Pile of Skulls!
We know how much players enjoy seeing their power in relation to others - the sensation of seeing how far you've grown when you see a new player or seeing how much higher you can go when you see a more experienced one. We will have multiple ways to track your progression in the Last Epoch player base and use these tools to foster a strong sense of community.
Stagnation is a threat to the health of any game, and with our Cycles we will keep Last Epoch fresh to players new and old for their entire game experience. When a new Cycle starts, the Ladders that track your progress will reset, your current characters will be moved to a different non-Ladder mode, and most importantly, new quests, items, and even game systems will be added for players to enjoy. With this system of regular updates, Last Epoch will be a game that you can be engaged in for years.
The planned pay model for Last Epoch upon release is for the game to be free to all players until level 20 with restrictions on player interaction in order to deter spamming. To advance beyond level 20, players may spend $14.99 to unlock the rest of the game's content and full social features! These restrictions on free players will go a long way to deter spam and botting accounts, which will help keep the game’s community and economy healthy. This one-time payment will be all that a player will have to spend to have the complete Last Epoch experience and be on the same footing as other players.
The only form of real money microtransactions Last Epoch will ever have are cosmetic, our currency for such is even named Cosmetic Points (CP) to emphasize this point. We will continually add in new exciting armor skins, skill effects, companion pets, and whatever else we dream up that can make your character visually more awesome and unique. No experience speed items, stat boost items, character boosts, or any other source of player power will be purchasable with real money. We do not believe in pay-to-win models.
Eleventh Hour Games is a Dallas-based indie game developer with a heart for action RPGs. Our team is comprised of 20 dedicated developers, videographers, composers, actors, and marketers, led by Game Director Judd Cobler, an ARPG veteran. Our studio is dedicated to delivering innovative and immersive player experiences that will provide gamers with thousands of hours of entertainment.
Over the past year we have made tremendous strides towards bringing Last Epoch to life, countless hours poured into developing core systems, learning how to craft entertaining levels, classes, and more. Even with this progress, we are very far from being able to put the complete Last Epoch experience in your hands, and that’s where your generous support comes in. With funding we will be able to pump out content even faster than we have so far, bring multiplayer servers online, and be able to do everything it takes to make this the next great ARPG.

Risks and challenges
Since we have most core systems created and ready for heavy content implementation, the only large risk we run is the lack of buy-in from our community. As with any game aiming to continue delivering content after release and supporting multi-regional online support, we will rely on the Last Epoch community to continue funding the game through cosmetic microtransactions. If our current community's enthusiasm is any indicator of their future buy-in, we will have no problem continuing support for the servers and the generation of new content to keep players coming back for moreLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
