Project Orion has started almost 2 years ago. After 2 decades of abstinence I begun to rediscover my love for tabletop and roleplaying games. That comes with the need of painting miniatures, what I did in my youth with joy and passion.
After a while I was able to improve my painting skills but I was unhappy with the common technique to mount the model on something like cork or an old color pot. At this time I worked as a packaging developer and my job was to improve or invent packaging solutions. Without a thought I started to develop a solution for better miniature painting. I had no idea that it could be this challenging. After almost 2 years and dozens of ideas, CAD files and 3D printed prototypes the perfect painting tool was born. THE ORION!
But that was not the end of the road. As I´m convinced that I invented something great I decided to produce and provide it to the gaming an painting community. Therefore I had to develop a mass production because 3D printing is too slow and too expensive for more than prototyping. That was a challenge on its own and sometimes I had to go back and start the whole CAD work from zero. But at the end I managed to find a good solution and it allows me to keep the production in my own hand. I am independant from external suppliers.
The Orion is 100% made in Germany.
The holders are designed to work with models that are mounted on a metal plate. This allows you to move or change the models fast and easy. You can use the holder directly with putty but this is less comfortable and you will miss one moving axis. Every holder comes with a strip of poster putty and 3 metal plates.
The Orion miniature holders are lightweight and ergonomic shaped. They fit naturally in your hand and you can hold them a long time without stressing your hand. With the holder between your fingers you are able to reach almost every part of the model very quick, easy and intuitive. For precise painting you can easily move the magnetic mounted model to the best location and the bar stabilize your brush or hand all the time. If you need a rest or have to clean your brushes the holder just stands on its own.
The holders have a base plate with a strong magnet in 15mm diameter. It is strong enough to hold metal miniatures but it is still easy enough to move them around. The holder comes "ready to work" with three metal plates and a strip of poster putty. If you have to paint an army you can also use something like a 5 €cent coin to prepare your models for magnetic mounting.
Unfortunately shipping of products containing Neodym magnets to USA, Canada and Japan is not allowed. Thats why I can only ship to EU countrys.

The Callisto holder is the big brother of the Orion.
During the work with the Orion holder I discovered that I need a solution for bigger models or special tasks like washes and brushes. The solution is "Callisto". It is 13mm bigger, one side provides you free access to your model and the other side a bar for steady and precise painting.
This is a small bunch of samples originated during the development process over the past 2 years.
I was asked by the comunity about colors or a nice, more visual, design. But I decided to keep it as plain and simple as possible. A coloured holder can influence your perception of colors you want to use for your model.
"I was sceptical at first but now I am suprised how good this thing is! It is well made and feels good in my hands. Now I can color my figures in a new and practical way."
"It changes the way I am painting"
"Nice, but I prefer the old "stickonemptycolorpot" way"
"Not for all paintings. In combination with the standard way very useful"
I will start shipping as soon as possible after the campaign has ended but latest in August
Shipping is offered only to Countrys in the European Union!
Shipping costs are 4,50 € for Germany and 7,50 € to other countries
Backers will be responsible for taxes and duties based on their local regulation and shipping address.
Mass production of a new product could be a big risk. Molds, tools and raw materials are expensive. I´m convinced that my product, the Orion miniature holder, is excellent. In the first place I developed it for my own use and I am using it for my gaming hobby a lot. But it is still possible that it is just me. I would like to have feedback from the community, and after the long and already expensive development phase I want to reduce the risk that no one exccept me likes my invention. Before I start the even more expensive production.
Risks and challenges
The production molds and the assembling process is developed and tested. So the only real risk is that shipping could be delayed for some reason.
I am personally handling the shipping so I can ensure that it will be my highest priority when the campaign ends. Backers will be responsible for taxes and duties based on their local regulation and shipping address.
100% Made in Germany. The production is to 100% in my hands. Ordering raw materials and tools can cause delays if I have to produce more than one thousand pieces. What I honestly do not expect. But I´m able to scale the process so If this project goes to the sky I can handle this too. The Timeline is calculated with spare time for unexpected delays. So I´m certain to start shipping as planned.
