Divinity Original Sin is an old-school cRPG with new ideas & modern execution, will release this year. Funded by fantastic backers!
19,541 backers pledged $944,282 to help bring this project to life.

A small delay for a good reason: Let there be voice!

If we were very busy last week, we’re even busier this week and we have nightmares about how busy we’re going to be in the next weeks, so please forgive us if this particular Kickstarter update is rather short.

It does contain plenty of news though!

A video summary, featuring the fantastic snowman

In this Kickstarter update, Swen talks about the voice recordings and how they will be implemented in Divinity: Original Sin, the reasons for the (small) delay, how a setback Kirill incurred resulted in this game having one of the biggest soundtracks ever, backer rewards, and more.

The Voices of Original Sin

We had to rob a bank to be able to bring you this news, but our getaway car was swift and drove us directly to a recording studio in London

Right now the studio responsible for Divinity: Dragon Commander is recording voices for Divinity: Original Sin. That means you can once again expect AAA quality voice acting with a fantastic cast.

If you’re not familiar with the voice acting quality of Dragon Commander, check out the following video. It’s bound to get your excitement meter up. We certainly can’t wait to hear the voices of the characters we’ve been working on for so long.

The Music of Original Sin

Over 130 songs are going to be included in Divinity:Original Sin and several of them are now ready and polished. To give you a taste of what’s coming, here’s one of the completed tracks with live instruments. Listen on big speakers, it’s never sounded this good!

June 20th becomes June 30th

Because of the voice recordings (and a few other things which will become clear soon) we have to delay the release of Divinity: Original Sin by 10 days.

This is going to give us the time we need to get everything integrated. We know we’re testing your patience, but you can rest assured that we’re as keen as you to release-- it's high time we get this game out of our hands and into yours!;) Those extra days, are strictly necessary; we promise!

Physical rewards

If you’re entitled to a physical reward, please fill in your address via your Larian Vault Kickstarter account. No address means no goodies (or delayed goodies).

Mark the date!

On June 18th we’ll be doing another twitch stream, showing off some of the later areas in Divinity:Original Sin as well as crossplay between PC & Mac.

This is going to be stuff that you haven’t seen before and by definition it will be slightly spoilerish.

But it will be cool and we’ll be doing plenty of questions and answers.

When: June 18th, 20:00 CET, 11:00 PST, 22:00 Moscow time

Early Access update – changes 49703 to 50719

We’re planning to do another Early Access update later today, featuring once again several things you’ve been asking for in addition to yet another truckload of bugfixes and balancing updates. Since the last EA update over a 1000 updates were done here at Larian. Full changelist coming once the new version goes live.

Expect things like further tweaks to spell specialization, a lobby which allows you to find other people to play with, much needed balancing changes to the surfaces & a fitting rewarding for eating that annoying shell. Coming soon, very soon ;)

Shout out!

We fell instantly in love with this one. It’s called Witchmarsh and it has coolness written all over it. More games need to be made about the twenties. Back it before the bee loses its knees!

voice acting...sweet...too bad you didn't push back the date even longer and add more voice acting. I really think that would have made this game a timeless classic like all your others but its all good...hope kirill feels better soon, he rocks.

*Vault version not too far after....

    7. Creator Darth Trethon - Exile in Torment on June 8, 2014

@Raze Steam has the biggest PC gaming sales that's undeniable but it is always surprising how few actually like Steam.....just saying that name is like a dirty word to many and I wouldn't touch Steam myself. The reason for that is because they've got a poor reputation but they are the least problematic place for PC gamers to get AAA games if they are unwilling to turn to consoles but that's not to say they are anything short of a nightmare for gamers.....which is why now trying to explain that Steam version of Divinity Original Sin is DRM free seems to fall on deaf ears. The sad truth is that most KS backers jump at the opportunity to be rid of Steam and I too want nothing to do with it DRM or not. Fortunately there will still be the GOG version on day one and hopefully a Larian Vault version too far after. And while I agree that this is not a huge deal and yes in this case the Steam version is DRM free I do hope Larian remember not to leave us looking at Steam only in the future because that would be a really bad day for everyone involved. I personally play AAAs on consoles even though my gaming PC can handle them because I don't do Steam's shenanigans or DRM. I move often and I do end up in places with extremely poor internet. I think Larian can help champion GOG and their Galaxy platform so that hopefully we may all look to a brighter future for gaming.

Wow, wow, wow, am I reading this right ? The PHYSICAL version we backed isn't going to be steam-free ? Come on tell me that's a Troll, if it's not there's no word to express my disappointment. What a let down Larian... Hopefully this is not true.

    9. Creator Fritjof - DreamT-WoOS-KC:D-Shadow on June 8, 2014

Everyone just take a chill spell and relax.. Larian is doing good things here. We have gotten most of our stretch goals so we should be thankful, in the end it is their choice of what goes in to the game. Larian has been really awesome letting us choose some really cool features to add into their game.

@darth, just ignore Gonchi, Just because he's shortsighted and plainly just a pain in the ass, he doesn't deserve (y)our attention.

    11. Creator Gonchi on June 8, 2014

@Darth Trenthon; That's fine. I'm glad that you're happy. I'm not though. I expected a completely standalone DRM-Free DVD. That's what they described, that's what I paid for.

    12. Creator Darth Trethon - Exile in Torment on June 8, 2014

@Gonchi It is a one time thing. Beyond that, I rather they deliver a much better game that I have to download, than a much lesser one I don't. They made the best call for the game.

    13. Creator Gonchi on June 8, 2014

@Darth Trenthon; The e-mail I got from Larian says plainly that the DVD version requires an internet connection and Steam to activate it. They said nothing as to whether that means it's a one time thing or it requires a persistent connection. I'm going to assume it's a one time thing, either way, it's entirely unacceptable to me as it directly contradicts what they said earlier.

    14. Creator Darth Trethon - Exile in Torment on June 8, 2014

@Gonchi He made a comment about the DIablo DRM and you reply with "Yes, you need internet to download".....that's not it. Like I said, they are making major and extensive additions to the game so they didn't get to put it on the disc. That's it. Nothing more to it, there's no conspiracy to force DRM on anyone. You have to download the game.

    15. Creator Gonchi on June 8, 2014

@Darth Trenthon; What are you on about now? Not once did I mention Diablo. Requiring to download it defeats the bloody purpose of getting a physical copy, doesn't it? And, as I already pointed out, goes directly against what they stated in their FAQ.

    16. Creator Darth Trethon - Exile in Torment on June 8, 2014

@Phoenixwi No you won't need internet after downloading the game. @Gonchi Stop spewing nonsense, this is NOT like Diablo where you couldn't play the game unless connected to the internet and most certainly does NOT require internet except for the obvious part which is downloading it.

    17. Creator Darth Trethon - Exile in Torment on June 8, 2014

@Phoenixwi & @Gonchi It sounds like they are working on the CE until the last possible minute and they are adding very extensive bits they probably couldn't add through a patch....like voice acting....so you'll likely need to download the game. The disc comes with a Steam installers that will install Steam and then download the game. After download there's no more DRM to it than there is to the GOG version or any other digital version of the game......once the game is installed you can uninstall Steam or select a different version through your pledge management....just select a Vault version if you don't want to create any accounts. No reason to get your panties in a bunch.

    18. Creator Gonchi on June 8, 2014

@Phoenixwi; Going by the reply I received from Larian on Friday 6th, yes, the DVD requires an internet connection and Steam to activate it.

    19. Creator Phoenixwi on June 8, 2014

      @Gnochi and Darth Trethon:

      Fact #1:
      - Online Activation is a method of DRM, don't tell me lies. Old games has cd keys and the installer wants this key, but you can do it without internet, that's not DRM. But if I need Internet to activate game, that is DRM!
      Fact #2:
      - Witcher oder Galactic Civilizations let you play offline, no activation is required. Why not here, if CE is supposed to be DRM-Free? GOG says so, no DRM means no online activation. So the DVD should be installed without online activation.

      Summary:
DRM: - Permamently online like Diablo 3
      - Online Activation like this game (DVD Version)?

    20. Creator dal on June 8, 2014

Does Kirill Pokrovsky need any help?..

    21. Creator Gonchi on June 7, 2014

@Darth Trethon; Not sure what fantasy scenario you've concocted in your mind, but you really shouldn't make assumptions. We wouldn't be having this discussion if the CE didn't require online activation, but it does. They shouldn't have asserted, numerous times, that their boxed copies would be DRM-Free if they weren't sure they could deliver.

    22. Creator Darth Trethon - Exile in Torment on June 7, 2014

@Gonchi Well it doesn't change the fact you have nothing to complain about and your argument is: it doesn't matter what the facts are because your behind is hurt. Too bad so sad, the sooner you learn to deal with it the better. The situation is exactly the way you chose it and that's your mistake. It's not Larian's fault if your internet is slow or you're tight on money or the customs fees and so on....they have plenty of problems to deal with on their end without putting up with nonsense attitudes of entitlement because you didn't think things through and plan accordingly. You're far more likely to get help if you plain state the exact nature of your problem without false pretenses and trying to argue technicalities to try to shift blame.

    23. Creator Gonchi on June 7, 2014

@Darth Trethon; Well, like I pointed out earlier, what you think or believe is really of very little consequence. Thanks nonetheless for the amusement.

    24. Creator Darth Trethon - Exile in Torment on June 7, 2014

@Gonchi I understand your complaint but it's silly at the absolute best. So you have to log in and create an account.....so what, takes a couple of minutes and you can fill in nonsense as there's no payment to be processed and download the game. You should already have an account on the Larian Vault so choose the vault version and get it from there. You're not going to get a refund, go cry to mommy or something. I don't care how crappy your internet connection is. I've dealt with as slow as a max download speed of 30 kilobytes per second and you know what? It will do the job, might take a while but hey if you won't waste time crying when the game launches you'll be able to play within a week or something. If you don't care about physical items you shouldn't have got the CE, actually you shouldn't have got any physical tier at all. You can keep arguing on here about DRM but the fact is very simple it's not. Sure there has to be an account because they're not going to put it up for public download and it's not a free service, they worked very hard and very long hours to make this game and they sure deserve to be compensated for that but they aren't putting any restrictions on you, you don't need an account to play the game, just to download. GOG is DRM free and so is this game.

    25. Creator Raze on June 7, 2014

      @VkBest
Mac release should be the same as the Windows version, AFAIK. I think they pretty much caught up when the Mac beta versions first started, and subsequent updates have been done at the same time.

    26. Creator Gonchi on June 7, 2014

@Darth Trethon; Why are you wasting your time arguing with me when you clearly have no idea what you are talking about?

Also, I didn't point it out before as I didn't want to drag the "whining" out further, but hey, you came back for more so, why not... you know that bit about never saying we wouldn't have to download the game? Go to https://www.larianvault.com/faq.php, scroll down to #7. Oops?

    27. Creator Kris on June 7, 2014

Get better Kirill and know you are in our thoughts!
Please become healthy again, before you continue on your work. Health comes always before the work. We can wait for additional new music, in a later update.

    28. Creator Darth Trethon - Exile in Torment on June 7, 2014

@Gonchi Oh but you are in need of some reasonable advice since reason is the one thing you seem to be in desperate need of. No need to thank me, you are more than welcome. :D

    29. Creator Gonchi on June 7, 2014

@Darth Trethon; You seem to believe there is a debate to be had, there isn't. Online activation is DRM. Period. Also, I don't recall asking for your advise, so what you would do in this circumstance really doesn't interest me. Thanks anyway and take care.

    30. Creator Darth Trethon - Exile in Torment on June 7, 2014

@Gonchi The release schedule is more hectic than anticipated and they've had to deal with a lot of setbacks....that happens, it's called life and it's not their fault. And the disc version of the game is DRM-free....you try to make an issue that you have to download the game but they never said you wouldn't have to download the game, so no promises broken. The fact you can get rid of Steam, play as you want, copy and back up the game as you want really destroys any kind of complaint you might have about DRM. So yes, from that perspective the disc version IS very-much DRM-free. Add to that the fact they're giving you another choice of download from GOG or the Vault to where you aren't even required to install Steam for the duration of the download leaves your arguments with no grounds to stand on. My advice: suck it up cupcake.

    31. Creator Gonchi on June 7, 2014

@Darth Trethon; They have, in fact, done something wrong. They said the discs would be DRM-Free and have failed to deliver on it.

If my whining bothers you, stop prodding for more? Just a thought.

    32. Creator Darth Trethon - Exile in Torment on June 7, 2014

@Gonchi Not for these sorts of pledges. You aren't going to get a refund, that offer was strictly for people who bought the CE when it was announced a few weeks ago thinking there would be dice in the box...that's it. Plus they've done nothing wrong. I'm all for supporting DRM free and I don't do Steam myself but your whining is ridiculous.

    33. Creator Gonchi on June 7, 2014

@Darth Trethon; You're right, Larian does.

    34. Creator Darth Trethon - Exile in Torment on June 7, 2014

@Gonchi Just as it doesn't matter what you cry....KS doesn't do refunds.

    35. Creator Gonchi on June 7, 2014

@Darth Trethon; What, you want a bank statement? You're pretty far off, but ultimately, I don't really care what you call BS on or what you believe.

    36. Creator Darth Trethon - Exile in Torment on June 7, 2014

@Gonchi So you pledged for a physical tier fully knowing you'd pay high customs fees but you are not interested in any of the physical items? I call BS, you're looking for an excuse to cry refund.....either way KS doesn't work that way. You are not, under any circumstances entitled to a refund for a KS pledge. My best guess would be you got yourself in a financial predicament you can't pay for the customs fees and can't receive the package so you're trying to twist it on Larian. Life sucks sometimes but trying to make others pay for your mistakes is not the way to go.

    37. Creator Gonchi on June 7, 2014

@Darth Trethon; I thought I was clear, I pledged at a physical tier because we were told the discs in it would be DRM-Free, under those circumstances I am more than willing to assume the costs involved, just like I've done for just about every other Kickstarter I've backed. I have no interest in it if it requires Steam however, no matter what other trinkets they've decided to include instead.

    38. Creator Darth Trethon - Exile in Torment on June 7, 2014

@Gonchi If you are going to be charged for a package someone else sends you then why did you pledge for a physical tier? That's all you. Clearly at some point you thought the physical items are worth it and you get more of those than you pledged for.

    39. Creator Gonchi on June 7, 2014

@Dark Trethon; Do you want to partially refund me $78 + whatever I might get charged by customs for import fees on their behalf? If so, sure.

    40. Creator Darth Trethon - Exile in Torment on June 7, 2014

@Gonchi So what if you don't use Steam? Just use the download from your selected platform then and don't use the Steam codes from the physical CE. They're not doing it to force DRM on you, they're doing it so they can keep working on the game until the end and they're improving the game massively every single day.

    41. Creator VkBest on June 7, 2014

Is there realease date for Mac version?

    42. Creator Gonchi on June 7, 2014

@Darth Trethon; Shouldn't need Steam for installing Original Sin. Maybe you're alright with that, more power to you, I'm not though. It goes directly against what they told us in their FAQ and in the Kickstarter comments when the subject came up. I pledged at a physical CE level because they specifically said the discs would be DRM-Free. Needing to online activate a physical disc, whether on Steam or anywhere else, is NOT DRM-Free.

    43. Creator Darth Trethon - Exile in Torment on June 7, 2014

@Gonchi So am I. You don't need Steam for anything other than installing Original Sin. After that you can even uninstall Steam completely and your game will continue to run just fine. No DRM.

    44. Creator Gonchi on June 7, 2014

@Darth Trethon; I'm talking about the disc version.

    45. Creator Darth Trethon - Exile in Torment on June 7, 2014

Also the game IS DRM free regardless of what platform you download it from(even Steam in this case). For this game Steam doesn't behave differently than GOG or the Vault, just download the game and never worry about using it again. Not to mention you still have GOG and the Vault as options for another copy of the game in the pledge management page.

    46. Creator Darth Trethon - Exile in Torment on June 7, 2014

You are never going to get emails about the dice because you were never supposed to get dice!!! Check your bloody reward tiers, no dice in there....not to mention the CE already gives you tons more than what you backed for(again, check your bloody tiers). I can't believe the nonsense I'm reading on here. Refund offers only apply to people who bought the CE after it was announced, who could complain they didn't get what they paid for when the dice aren't there.

    47. Creator AuldWolf on June 7, 2014

      @Gonchi

That's been my experience, too. They aren't the most reliable group of people, and after the shenanigans they pulled with Dragon Commander, I'm not sure I can say I'm surprised. My opinion of Larian's good will has dropped steeply and sharply.

    48. Creator Agenttrap on June 7, 2014

Take your time guys. You are the ones who control when the game is released, not us. Make it great, time is irrelevant to me.

    49. Creator Gonchi on June 7, 2014

I also pledged at CE level and didn't receive any e-mails. I am far less concerned about the dice than I am about the CE suddenly having DRM when we were specifically told it'd be DRM-Free. Unlike Brian, I do want a refund, either partial or in full, but communicating with Larian has been nearly impossible.
