Update #47

Silverglen, Method to the madness, Learn Russian, Font check, Shout out!

Why do RPGs take so much time to develop? And how do you try to quantify the quality of what you are making? These and other questions are things developers like ourselves often think about, but seldom agree upon. That's because the answer to these questions is very complex, and cannot be summarised easily. In this latest update, we reflect a bit on on the metier of making RPGs. And we do a shoutout! And we want you all to learn Russian! And we found back a cool movie! And you need to tell us what you think of our new font. And there's also another Larian-leak, through which it is revealed that there exists such a place as Silverglen!

The implicit revelation of Silverglen

It happens from time to time, more than often in fact, that the implementation of a quest takes much more time than a designer originally anticipated. Typical reasons are the game engine not supporting everything the designer wants to do or there being much more possibilities that need to be handled than originally assumed.

In this latest update video, Bert, our resident scripting guru, explains how Björn and Mara's problems caused him multiple headaches, and how regular exercise, healthy food and a strict lifestyle helped him through this particularly difficult period in his life.

He also discloses one of our closest guarded secrets - the existence of ... Silverglen!

Method to the madness

Swen updated his blog today, explaining what he thinks is important in role playing games. It shouldn't come as a surprise that he cares a lot about character development - really a lot! So much in fact that he considers everything else to be subservient to it when it comes to making RPGs.  He somehow managed to drag in Ultima VII too, again.

"And so it came to be that my youthful self invented the FUME paradigm, a pattern against which one can evaluate the likelihood of Swen falling in love with a RPG, or not. If it scores low on the FUME scale, statements you can expect from me include such gems as “it sucks” or “that shouldn’t have been made”

If you want to know what makes Swen fall in love, check it out. It's not hard to see how universal appliance of his rules would lead to better RPGs, but it's also not hard to see why universal appliance of these rules is pretty hard :)

Font check!

It's that time of the year again - we need to make final decisions about our fonts! Thomas has been diligently testing out various fonts on unsuspecting bunnies (see from the archives) and tell us that the following font is good for our eyes. While judging, take into account that it is none other than Jan writing the dialogue - meaning, expect many many many lines. Let us know if it's too big, too small, too ugly, too whatever, for once decided, it's going to stay for a very very long time.

From the archives

The last game we made that featured two main protagonists was Beyond Divinity, and though we're pretty sure DOS is going to be a vastly superior game, Beyond Divinity spawned some great ideas that even led to some pretty impressive fan efforts. Check out this gem about the special soul forge relationship between a divine paladin and a very surprising death knight.

Does it have anything to do with DOS? No, but we thought Plowking's movie deserved another mention, because it really is cool. And don't worry - there is no soul forge between our two protagonists. Far be it from us to pull the same stunt twice. We figured out a fate far worse for our two heroes ;)

DOS does Russia

The latest show we did was in Russia - to be specific - in Moscow - to be more specific - In Russia in Moscow at the Igromir show. Because of that, we can only bring you media news from Russia. Like this clip for instance - the only thing you need to understand is "One of the most interesting and promising Igromir' games wasn't available to general public" :)

Shout out (2X)

These guys are in Belgium. Reason 1. They have a fantasy strategy card game. Reason 2. And they promised us 5% of all their proceeds. Reason 3. Faeria. It rocks! And they only need a few thousands more, as in less than 2000US$. (*)

Furthermore, for some reason, somebody in our office developed a soft spot for Beeswing. Have a look and discover a world of intertwining stories in a handcrafted game set in rural Scotland.

(*) Obviously, reason 3 really is that they have a very cool rooster. (**)

(**) Obviously, we're not really getting 5% of all their proceeds.

I personally like the font. Simple is best. Perhaps vowels could be a little less..."round", but I like it.

I'm not so keen on the font. Something about the vowels really grates me, and the curves in letters like d, g and m just don't work for me. I'd much prefer some kind of font scaler and selector, since others seem happy with this but I couldn't see myself reading this the whole way through; even just on a short passage I find it difficult.

I like the font, readable... I don't want something too fancy... when you do fancy on fonts... tends to become unreadable.

I like the presentation of the dialog, very nice!

Don't jump to conclusions.. lol. You guys are so funny. :-)

You know, for a while I was questioning why your logo was a solider getting shot with a suctioncup arrow.. seemed too silly for the games you've made. But... with the intro music and the videos you guys make... it fits.

Keep up the great work! I am very excited for this game!

The font is slightly less readable than I'd like for big blocks of text. It looks alright, but I can see my eyes getting tired after reading it for a while. You might try Prociono; it has a larger x-height, which will help legibility, and the glyphs are inspired by blackletter, so it still has an old-world feel.

Is there some reason we can't have a font size we can adjust or at least have a few sizes of them? The font itself looks fine.

It's funny now whenever I hear INXS' Original Sin I think of the game.

I hadn't realized it at first but what Tomáš says is quite true - the thickness is inconsistent. It would seem the renderer is to blame; if you look closely at the word "recharged", the first 'e' is visibly narrower than the second one.

    16. Fb_profile_picture.small

"a" and "o" are indeed too similar. You may not notice if you don't understand how brain works when reading and English is your native/very familiar.

As for the rest.. Generally, the font is acceptable. I would not prefer it on my E-Book, but ok. It fits the game. (Serif fonts are not meant for monitors. This discussion don't have it either.) However I see some problem (just a small one) with thin/thick of different letters. May be render problem but it hardens fast reading. "Source" for example. "o, c, e" are much thinner then "u, r". It makes the text a bit "rainbow-ish" and makes it a bit harder for me to read. (Also "E" is missing serif.)

But it's big enough to be well readable.

Agree with most that font should be adjusted. Dunno if it's size or what, it's just not easy to read--I shouldn't have to concentrate to read! Love the example that ThomasN posted. I totally get the desire to be "atmospheric" but the quality of the dialogue is much more important than the font :) As long as it's not Arial or Times New Roman :)

    21. Missing_small

Creator Flump - the flying turtle on October 29

I'm not in love with the font;t he spacing and shape of some of the letters (like 'a') make it a bit hard to read (not sure if it is the spacing or the lack of distinction on the 'a'). Also does the font scale (say the same size) on high resolution screens? If not then it might be a bit small...

I like the font, and I like that it seems to be typeset (?) more like a book and less like a website or Word document -- I think I see ligatures! -- which is good. Of course, there is always room for improvement.

Is there a particular reason you can't make font size configurable? People have different screens at different resolutions at different distances from their very different eyes. As it is, it may be a bit small for playing on the TV, for instance.

    24. Missing_small

      Creator Domme on October 29

The font in itself is easy to read, but in some words the letters could use some space between them, "process" for example.
The style of the font fits to the theme, I think.

    25. Missing_small

Creator Tor Andersson on October 29

The line spacing is nice and loose, which is very good! The letter spacing feels a bit tight though; the characters are unevenly spaced and bump into each other making it a bit difficult to read.

I would recommend using fonts designed for legibility rather than looking fancy: Gentium from SIL is a very nice font which would fit thematically as well. Bitstream Charter and its derivative Charis SIL are some of the best fonts out there for screen use. I suggest you try using those font families before making a final decision.

The font rendering could be improved as well: use floating point metrics, render the glyphs without hinting at a floating point location (multiple renderings per glyph, for different sub-positions in a pixel) for more even letter spacing. Don't forget kerning. Do the alpha blending in a linear color space (or gamma corrected) to reduce the "blur" from anti-aliasing.

Really, the number one point here is to use floating point arithmetic for text layout and rendering. Snapping glyph widths and positions to integer coordinates results in the typical uneven text spacing you see almost everywhere. It can look so much better, so why not go the last mile?

Feel free to contact me at tor at ccxvii dot net if you want to talk more; font and text rendering technology is what I do professionally, and I'd love to help improve your game!

I like the font just as it is in the screenshot.
I can sort of see why some people would want it bigger, though I have to say it looks just fine to me at that resolution. If it were to be bigger I'd hope it wasn't by too much.

I agree with the others saying the font is too small. Providing an option to change the font-size would bee ideal.

    29. Stasisavatar.small

Creator jorlinn on Linux on October 29

About the font, hmm, two words stick out like a sore thumb, "scare" and "cuddle". The kerning seems to be a bit too tight between the c and the a in scare and between the c and the u. I agree about the size. This should be a bit bigger. The anti-aliasing makes the letters appear muddy on the sides. The space between certain letters could be a bit bigger. While sans-serif is certainly better readable, I think that this setting requires serifs to fit in with the style. A resizable UI would be great (as an option in the menu, no handles on the screen please,,,), but can quite hard if it is a mix between vector and raster images.
The background image makes the letters hard to read when the contrast between background and lettering becomes too low. I generally prefer fonts that have longer ascenders and descenders. This font feels a bit cramped in more than one way.

The font is too small. I don't typically sit with my face ultra close to the monitor.

    33. Tuscanybacker.small

Creator Serge Meynard on October 28

Font preferences can be very personal, and I admit I'm a bit picky here... The font size seems OK to me, and although I'm not overly fond of the look (especially the crooked 'e'), it's also not that bad. As others have said, I think the kerning could be improved, especially after the 'r'; and the text would look much nicer with improved anti-aliasing - look at the slants in the letters "MAvw' for example, or the curve in 'O'. Maybe I'm getting too used to my iPad retina display :)

    34. Missing_small

Creator Mark L on October 28

As yet another older gamer with not-so-great eyesight, I would have to say I don't like the font very much. Lower-case a & o are too similar, the letters are spaced far to close together, and it is too small. In general I agree with the comments by Mark231.
I also think either a sans-serif font, or one with better kerning and increased spacing, would be preferable. There is a really big difference between the way a font looks at 1920x1200 and the way it looks at 1280x720 or 800x600. It may not be easy to find one font size that works well at all different resolutions...
Adjustable font size would be a real plus, but might be impractical, depending on how difficult it would be to implement..

    35. Babos_fan.small

      Creator Yuoaman on October 28

I would definitely recommend allowing the user to decide on a font size, I'd probably also go with a slightly larger one as the default, though, as that could be difficult to read on a 1080p monitor.

Thanks for the update. I always enjoy them and really appreciate learning more about what you do and gradually meeting everyone at Larian.
As to the font: If it can be read in DOS as easily as in this picture, than that font is just fine. San serif would be even easier to read. Does it mess up menus and dialogue boxes too much to give us a a couple of choices? It wouldn't even have to be different fonts, just a "bold" or a couple of point sizes or line spacing. I don't know if that would make things too complicated on your end or not.

As for the font, it seems fine–although I agree with mark231 that the kerning/hinting could do with some work (especially when using small letters/glyphs). And I guess a scalable UI would indeed be nice.

About Bert's quest - Swen suggested Bert add a dual-dialogue about whether to heal the pack animal or put it down. Since it was already said that killing the animal in front of the owners would turn them hostile. I'm a little skittish about having that kind of thing left up to a dice roll. I suppose having that kind of dangerous decision might be a regular occurrence in the game, though.

So long as you have a scalable UI (Larian has been very good about this over the years), that font size looks fine.

You guys make my favorite Kickstarter updates, by the way. Maybe. It's close!

    49. Missing_small

      Creator mark231 on October 28

The small text needs at least slightly more space between the letters, or maybe even only much better kerning. (the "ri" in curious is especially bad).

To my eyes the it looks quite restless, I wouldn't want to read a longer text in it as it is.

I think you're running up against the physical resolution for the small text, so increasing the size may help.

If you have designed this font yourself, you may have done too little kerning and hinting. In that case you may want to buy instead of building - find a similar looking font with full kerning and hinting from some font foundry, and implement kerning and hinting your text renderer if necessary.

In a related note, check out the character portraits: The mana bar is gone. They've replaced a mana-based magic system with a cooldown-based magic system.

On one hand, it seems a bit odd for a turn-based combat system, because a turn-based cooldown can only be expressed in number of turns. On the other, it's possibly a more reliable way of balancing out powerful spells besides "cast Armageddon, drink mana potion, cast Armageddon again."
