Update #48: Definitive Edition! The Final Kickstarter Update

Posted by Larian Studios LLC (Creator)
Hi everybody!

Three years ago, 42,713 of you - our most dedicated fans - supported us and believed in our game when it was still in its infancy. To say that since then the game has come a long way would be an understatement.

As we’re getting ready to release the Definitive Edition this Thursday, we wanted to take a moment to say thank you once again.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Divinity:Original Sin 2 would not be the game it is if it hadn’t been for the community that supported us throughout and after development. You all have been amazing and we’re very grateful for having such a wonderful, positive and supportive community.

Swen returned to the place where it all began to record this final Kickstarter update. He tells the tale of how sometimes drastic measures are necessary if you want to release a game...

Live Stream

To celebrate the release of the Definitive Edition, we’re organizing a massive live stream from PAX West. We’ll be showing the game, answering any questions you might have and hopefully also bringing in a few surprise guests. It should be a lot of fun, so be sure to tune in.

The stream will go live at 10am PDT / 6pm GMT and you can find us directly on our store page within the steam application or on their website.

The Definitive Edition

As Kickstarter backers, you should already have Divinity: Original Sin 2 in your Steam or GOG library. Once we go live on the 31st, the game will update, adding a launcher window that will let you choose between the original version of the game or the Definitive Edition.

You can continue playing the existing version and use your existing saves, but if you want to try out the Definitive Edition, you will need to create a new character.

This update is 100% free and everyone that owns the game on the 31st will receive the Definitive Edition automatically.

You will also get free access to our new mini-companion DLC, Sir Lora.

If you want to know what’s in the Definitive Edition, check out this 53 page document containing all the changes. (Warning: Massive spoilers ahead.)

Our Last Kickstarter Update

This will be the last Kickstarter update for Divinity:Original Sin 2.

We’ll obviously continue to support the game with patches and we are still working on ports to other platforms, but content wise we’ll be moving on to new things. Expect to hear a lot more from us once we’re ready to announce our new endeavors.

It’s been a great ride.

You are all fantastic.

Thank you.

Firstly, thanks for one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had! Secondly, thanks for all the awesome videos and updates on the game as it was in development. Thirdly! Give us a way to fund your next game! Kickstarter, another crowd funding service or one you make yourself, let us help you make the game your way!

Cheers. You did more than enough. Can't wait to see what's next

Absolutely loved the video, but sad to hear it is the last update. This is one of the best KS projects I have backed, and I would not hesitate to back you again. Thank you for having integrity and always over-delivering. While I don't play on a Mac, I know friends who do and are interested in the game if you port it there. Thanks again for everything!

    4. Joel Fox on

Could you please maybe make the launcher window smaller? It's really, really big.

from all the projects i backed and even from all the devs i know, you guys feel more than what my favorite place to buy stuff from feels. you know, you go to buy a couple of coffeebeanbags and since you are a regular and get an additional kilo of apples (or whatever), in exchange you might fix their register or whatever on occasion.

the difference here is, that you treat everyone of your costumers this way. its easy to see you like and have fun with what you do. i appreciate that, so respect for this.

    6. Ian Phillipchuk on

Love the game. My one and only regret is I did not order a larger size of Hoodie. If anyone has a large sized hoodie in good condition I will buy it off you NO PROBLEM. Get at me.

This is the kind of stuff kickstarter should be all about. I paid a good/fair price to help a product get produced and have been appreciated for it and have enjoyed it. It was also released within a reasonable time frame with minimal delays.

Now, don't get me started on 3 of my other (physical item) backed projects...... *shivers*

    8. Boon Jin Tek on

I've been googling and looking for some answers with regards to the port to Mac. I remember that was like a promise... And now, PS4 port is being introduced, but what about the Mac one?

No, thank YOU Larian. You've done your fans and the entire gaming industry a commendable service. I backed this project the moment I saw it because I was a fan of the first Original Sin. I, and undoubtedly many others would back you again a million times over without hesitation.

You did good Larian. Thank you.

    10. Brian Levinsen

Well hopefully not the last update. Hopefully you will let us know when you launch the next game so we can get in and support you as early as possible.

      Mac version, finally!

    15. Logan on

Thanks for the fun final update! I can't wait to see what else you do as D:OS and D:OS2 are epic games and well within the Top 20 for everyone who loves a RPG IMO. Anyways please do share with us what's next even if it's not going to be KS funded, I'm sure many of us will Early Access or per-purchase :)

Thanks for an awesome game and the fun times during and after it's production!

Any other company doing good I'd want them to use their own money to make future games but due to your excellent KS handling I would be sad if ever you make a new game without including us all on the journey.

This is by far the best Kickstarter campaign I've ever participated in. Was glad to be a part of it and sorry it is over. Will be watching to see what Larian Studios does next. Hope to see another project by you guys in a year or so.

Passing by to drop a huge thank you, you're awesome! Please keep making great games like this.

But I still haven't played D:OS2 because I'm waiting for the macOS client :(

If you need more money to make another amazing game don't be afraid to make another update, I don't want this to be the final one I have more money to give you ♡

Thank you for your hard work. It was a privilege to back the game.

Thank you guys for this monumental ride through both games. It's great to see that you got a second chance after your beginnings got so massively smacked off as a D-clone were you guys actually created a solid RPG and not just some hack'n'slash digital crack piece without brains.
It's sad that Kirill Pokrovsky passed but his legacy lives on in those pearls you created.
I look forward to hear from new projects, hopefully with less elves. ;)

Thank you for always providing the classic edition of the game when you do a definitive release, and upgrading the existing users to the new edition. Makes me happy to have backed you as a developer! :)

    29. tarasis on

Does this mean you’ll provide some of the things from the earlier Kickstarter like the design doc and other notes :)

Hi. I backed ages ago. Unfortunately, the backer version of the game was only the Windows version. Any chance I could get discount for the PS4 version?

This is how you do a Kickstarter. It’s been nothing but a positive experience to follow the progress of the game, you’ve done more than right by backers at every turn, and your communication has always been thoughtful and clear (and full of delightful surprises!).

I hope you all get the chance to take a well-deserved final victory lap on the project before moving on. You’ve won a devoted fan and definite backer if you choose to Kickstart your next endeavor!

I am sure this is good news... Sadly, given the system requirements are so extreme I have been unable to play the game leaving me with a $50 waste of my money, a bad taste in my mouth and no desire to support another Larian Kickstarter - unless you post (minimum) system requirements at launch.
      Best of luck to you.

Amazing work. Proud to support such an amazing crew and company. LARIAN rocks.

Larian, I just want to say every update that's been sent out has brightened up my day significantly. When the game was in early development, I was in college. After class I would see an update and it would make my day A LOT less boring. There has been so much interesting information in each update that, even if I never play the game, backing has been worth the cost. Thank you for making my life better with your interesting updates for these past 3 years.
