Kickstarter Update #26: Early Access Announced - 15th September!

Posted by Larian Studios LLC (Creator)

You look around the tavern. It's getting crowded in here…

In one corner you see a dark-haired stranger, sharpening a blade. You've heard whispers about that one. They say he lost something. They say he's a lone wolf on a rampage.

By the bar, a tall, crimson lizard in regal armour is demanding a sherry. He'll be disappointed; in this place you're fancy if you ask for your water to be rat-free.

Sitting by the fire, a young girl's staring at the flames. She's talkin', but there ain't no one else there to hear her. Whatever she sees in the flickering light, it's beyond you.

And by the door there's a tall, beautiful elf entertaining a line of suitors. But through the strands of her hair, you can see her mark. A mark that twists and moves - a living scar. Beautiful she may be, but she smells of trouble.

You take another sip of your beer, and notice the fifth stranger. He's been staring at you through all of this. You nod as you meet his piercing blue eyes, and he stalks over to your table. You shift on your stool as he pulls up a chair, leans in close, and whispers-

Welcome to Kickstarter Update #26! We’ve had a hectic couple of weeks, but it’s all coming together today. Here’s Swen to tell you what we’ve been up to, and what’s coming next.

Early Access is Coming!

We are incredibly excited to announce that you’ll get your first taste of Divinity: Original Sin 2 on the 15th of September. We’re giving all Kickstarter backers access to the first act of the game: Fort Joy.

We’re going to level with you - it’s not a nice place. Think Alcatraz, but if Alcatraz was a leper colony. And the island was haunted. And the bay around it was full of sharks. With tentacles… It ain’t pretty, is what we’re saying. But we’re sure that a resourceful Sourcerer like you will be able to find some new friends. Or useful enemies…

We’ve been working on this for a very long time, and seeing it go out into the world is an amazing experience. We’ve already had some incredible feedback from the press but of course it’s your voices that we can’t wait to hear. You were all here with us when we started this journey, and we can’t wait to show you how far we’ve come. And we’re not done yet!

So how do I get my hands on Divinity: Original Sin 2?

You won’t be able to play the game until the 15th September, but we will be sending out instructions on how to claim your game codes later this week. However, if you want to get ahead of the game, you can always link your account to the Larian Vault. To do this:

1. Log in or create account on
2. Click on "D:OS2 Kickstarter" (Make sure it’s the D:OS 2 Kickstarter, and not the original D:OS Kickstarter)
3. Fill in the email address you used to log in to Kickstarter or Paypal when you backed D:OS 2 and click the "Link" button.

You won’t be able to claim your code just yet, but you’ll get a great overview of your pledges. And once the codes are available: that’s where they’ll be.

We’ll have more information later this week, but we do need to stress a couple of important things:

  • The key that you claim is going to be the same key that applies to your game. You can’t play Early Access on Steam and then get the game on GOG.
  • We can not swap Steam keys for GOG keys in the future.
  • We’re working with GOG to get let people who claim GOG codes get early access ASAP, but for now early access is available through Steam only.   We'll let you know once the GOG versions are available.

So, if you want to play your copy of Divinity: Original Sin 2 using GOG, DON’T claim a Steam Key just to get into Early Access faster. We can’t swap it for a GOG key later.

Gamescom: A whirlwind week in Cologne!

As you’ll have seen in the video above, Swen and the gang had a jam-packed few days showing our game to the press last week at Gamescom. You can read some of the wonderful feedback we’re getting by following the links below:

Rock Paper Shotgun

“The smartest twist on cooperative multiplayer that I’ve seen since Dark Souls... And what characters there are in this game. From the superbly pompous Red Prince, an aristocratic reptile, to the rambling host of a hundred demons, a possessed lady who explains her attractiveness to demons by comparing her mind/soul to a pleasant inn that they’re all spending their vacation time in. The writing for all of them is fantastic, skipping between world-building and witticisms with ease, and sometimes within a single sentence..."

PC World
“Divinity: Original Sin II is horrifically funny, in co-op... Original Sin II raises the potential for mayhem. It seemed like no matter what Avellone and I did, hell was bound to break loose.”

PC Games N
“[It] feels more ambitious and inventive than any other RPG out there right now ... After having played a good few hours of it, it’s hard not to be as excited as a kid at Christmas about it. Thankfully you won't have until Christmas though, as Divinity: Original Sin 2 goes into early access September 15.”

… and there are many more articles across lots of languages! If you speak German, be sure to pick up the latest issue of GameStar, as there’s a 7-page spread on Divinity: Original Sin 2!

Not to mention the bastions of RPG knowledge online: RPG Watch and RPG Codex, who both enjoyed their hands-on time with our game:

Up Next: PAX West

Our next big engagement is PAX West, where we’ll be showing off the game to as many of you as we can. We’ll have a great booth (#6011), competitions, goodies, and our team will be on hand to answer your questions about the game. And of course, we want to get as many of you sitting down and playing it as possible ahead of Early Access.

Shout Out

While he was at GamesCom, Swen found a great way to enjoy all the fun of crashing your drone into a tree at 100km/h without making his kids cry: LuGus Studios’ Liftoff. This program isn’t just a fun game that lets you customise your own drone, and fly it through a variety of courses - it also perfectly maps the way real drones react in the world. It’s so accurate, one quarter of all real drone pilots use it to practice their skills.

So if you don’t have several hundred dollars to invest in expensive drone equipment, maybe throw a few bucks their way on Steam Early Access!

No, just Windows. Other platforms may be announced later in development, or after release.

Will early access be available to Mac?

    3. Steven Dillon-Erickson on

Wow, this is freaking awesome! A day after my birthday! What a fantastic Gift! Thanks Larian Crew (and of course Swen)!

    4. Raze_Larian on

Not if you want to play exclusively on PS4. If you want to play on PC first, if and until it is released on PS4, then check it out in Early Access (or GOG's Games in Development, once that is available).

    5. Nic Pegg on

If I want to play on PS4, is it worth getting early access?

    6. Daivid Sanchez on

NO!!! Early access is available through Steam only. I'm sad now, but hopefully you'll get it to work in time with GOG. I guess I must wait a little longer. :-( Besides that, congratz on the EA!

    7. deonast on

Nice I got the double dips tier so I can redeem on steam and later on GOG when that rolls along

    8. Tovarah - Weresheeptiger of Sin [DOoD] on

So long University, Original Sin 2 has already claimed a place in my schedule from the 15th!

It's brilliant news and I can't wait to play it.

    9. Jito463 - WoOS, LofUT on

I honestly find your method of deciding when to release it, completely believable. :D

    10. Raze_Larian on

There will be a Kickstarter update about stuff like that as things are getting organized, and again as deadlines approach. There was an email sent out already about the portraits.

You can email a picture to, with "Portrait of a Fan" as the subject (preferably larger than 1000x1000 pixels, but as long as the quality is reasonable it should be fine).
Also include the name you would like in the game (will appear as "Portrait of [Chosen Name]"), which is subject to approval (to make sure it is consistent with the game world and lore).

    11. Salvatore on

Good news. But I have a question. When the rewards will be delivered? I'm not asking about physical rewards. More interested about portraits and others like that. Beacause I still don't know where to send my picture.

    12. Raze_Larian on

The designs are not final yet, but there should be a preview (and size charts) in a future update.

The Early Access keys are the game keys, so it will just update to the full game at release.
      I don't know about achievements.
Beta saves will not be compatible with the release, and depending on the changes made, may be incompatible after updates during the beta.

    13. Turk

      Hi team

any designs or previews of the Hoodie? :p

    14. June

@Michael No problem! Glad it worked :)

    15. Jinx on

Aha, I see what happened. I had apparently already done this a while back (I guess they must have sent an email once and I just followed instructions and forgot it). I did a "forgot password" thing and just went through the process on my Michael Bantz email, and it worked out. Thanks, June.

    16. Jinx on

Well the Larian Vault e-mail isn't the same, but it didn't say it needed to be. I entered in my kickstarter e-mail in the link thing, and it just said it wasn't used to back it.

    17. June

@Michael Bantz Is it the same as your Kickstarter email?

    18. Jinx on

I made an account on Larian Vault and tried to link my e-mail, but it says it wasn't use to back the kickstarter. Clearly that's a mistake. What the heck?

    19. Purrmaid

      omg! this is amazing news!

Will this be a proper steam early access? Meaning one game one install, and not duplicate games in my steam library (like left for dead 2 and left for dead 2 beta).

      Will early access have achievements?
I don't know where I got this idea, but I was imagining beta testing this, where I'd loose my characters and my progress. But.. with the new steam early access system. Do you guys plan a character wipe? Or is it "Play early access with x character, and continue x character in the future chapters"

Or is it more of a closed beta but using the steam early access tag?.. okay now I'm confusing myself D:

    20. Dawn_

I guess that in 3 weeks i can goodbye to ùy social life T_T (800hrs on the first)

Awesome sauce! Or is that the blood rain spell...

    22. Nedda Ren on

      @ms, happy birthday!!!!

    23. Nedda Ren on

So excited about the news!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!

    24. Logan on

Hopefully you get it sorted out with GOG. I use to roll Steam, but the purely DRM-free option of GOG is a must for me now (plus I can backup my game offline and go back and play it in 20 years even if GOG is gone).

    25. Marilyn on

Early access right on my birthday, yeah ^^

    26. Ryan on

is it possible for you to make a kickstarter / steam profile image?

    27. John Parkinson

Hey Loopan! My birthday's the 15.09.1978, so I'm getting a great birthday present too :)

    28. Loopan on

My birthdate is the 15.09.1968 !!

I couldn't ask for a better birthdaypresent than this!!

      Thanks a lot Larian,
I'm proud to be a backer of this amazing game and I was also a fan from the first hour of divine divinity!

      greetings from switzerland

    29. Helena on

Good to hear that Early Access is coming to GOG as well, even if it will be a bit later.

    30. Fade_to_Black on

So Alpha access is now Early Access??

    31. tarasis on

Oh and that drone thing looks damn good.

    32. tarasis on

*chuckles* I think for the next KS your best forgetting the Alpha/Beta access being part of a tier :)

Anyway looking forward to seeing what its like.

@Markytheoz - as greenjf says this is more something for GOG than Larian. GOG have only recently started even doing Early Access, and as they are doing a more curated approach for it its entirely up to them when its allowed (that said given that GOG backed D:OS II I think there is a fair chance they will)..

For @larian will the 4 multiplayer (and later DM mode) be totally cross platform where those on GOG and Steam can play together? (and later console versions too)

    33. Nakano

Good that you remember that @Jesse. But does Larian wants to support it during a few weeks? If yes, I probably claim the copy on Steam - otherwise on GOG. Technology is definitely there.

    34. Jesse Roberge

GOG connect will allow free-add in GOG when the game is in the steam library. Requires publisher/developer participation though.

    35. J.L. on

Will you post an update or send out emails when it is available on GOG? (c:

@Over - I agree, did try to play the first with my hubby but it is easier said than done, so hopefully it is as much fun/polished/elaborated/etc solo (sans obvious co-op specific entanglements, obviously).

Always good to see you guys at Larian being so positive and upbeat. (c:

    36. Over on

I just hope the single player part of the game didn't suffer from this higher focus on co-op.

      greenjf on

@Markytheoz Steam and GoG are different distributors with separate rules for publishing. Steam has made it easier for Indie games to release early access games. Allowing small companies to use it as a alpha/beta platform. I believe GoG is working on that but it's not Larians fault.

If you want to be upset, place it at GoG. Enough input they might make it easier for Larian and others to use it as a public test platform. So until then just wait till its on GoG and don't waste your Key.

    38. June

@Markytheoz I don't think it's intended as punishment. GOG has their "In Dev" games too, which are basically the equivalent of Early Access. That’s probably the GOG option that Larian is working on providing.

    39. Markytheoz on

This is not cool. Punishing people who prefer GOG over Steam sucks.

    40. Matt M. on

Very exciting! GOG recently started working on GOG Connect, which lets people link their Steam account to their GOG account and get some games they own on Steam added to their GOG list for free, if the devs of those games have opted to participate in the program. Any chance of investigating this option for the future so we won't need to choose one service or the other?

    41. Larian Studios LLC 2-time creator on

@Dwelfusius, no, savegames won't be compatible (for a lot of technical reasons).

    42. Dwelfusius | Were-axlotl of Original Sin on

brr shudder, I mean Early Access ofcourse :) not that other EA

    43. Dwelfusius | Were-axlotl of Original Sin on

Were you able to implement the so called "alert levels" discussed at the EAX, which were an absolutely brilliant idea?
