Maybe you love the look and feel of the L.A. River Brewing Company – we can’t blame you: we love aesthetics too. Maybe you’ve been lucky enough to corral a taste of one of our fine brews, and you couldn’t believe how awesome your mouth felt afterward. Maybe you’re a fan of local products created by local people….we’re for that, too. And maybe….just maybe…you’re loaded and extraordinarily philanthropic. To be honest, it doesn’t really matter to us why you ended up on our kickstarter page – we’re just happy you’re here.
Trying to open a brewery is difficult. It takes a lot of capital to get a big project like this moving. We realize we're trying to raise a TON of money....and truthfully, our Kickstarter campaign only gets us part of the way there. But during our search for investors, we have run in to many people who are excited about what we're doing and want to be involved, just not to the degree that our full-fledged investors are. We honestly believe everyone should have the chance to help build this with us...we're all about championing the little guy, and about local people creating a local product.....and we sure as heck can't do it alone. But we're also not interested in half-assing it. We're going to work HARD. But we're not going to cobble together a fledgling operation that fails to live up to expectations. We value your contributions too much for that. We value the ideas behind our company too much for that. We're big thinkers...big dreamers....we believe that the best results always come from aiming high. We'd like you to aim high along with us.
Dreamers? Yes. Dream-ING? Not a chance. By backing us on Kickstarter, you're becoming part of our team, and we take that very seriously. We've been working hard over the last 18 months to ensure that by the time we launched our Kickstarter campaign, we had positioned ourselves to succeed. We have an outstanding brand. We have an extraordinarily strong (and sleek-looking) business plan. We have an awesome website. We have a large network of friends and followers on Facebook and Twitter. And most importantly, we have a plethora (yes, a PLETHORA!) of awards from brewing competitions across the west coast, validating that we make a great product. So it's not a matter of "if" for the L.A. River Brewing Company. It's a matter of "when."
So, what will your pledges do to help L.A. River Brewing Company get off the ground? It's pretty simple, really: our end goal is producing our first "commercial" batch of hand-crafted, quality beer by opening our doors at a brewing space in Culver City. Your pledges help us purchase the space and equipment necessary to achieve that goal. But the cool thing is that while the goal is finite ("Open doors. Produce batch one."), the life of the company is not. Your pledges may help get the inaugural kegs of L.A. River Brewing Company beer out the doors to our local bars and restaurants, but they will also continue to be recognized long after the actual monetary value of your contributions has been exhausted. We don't think it sounds too weird to say that by contributing to our Kickstarter campaign, you ensure that there's a little bit of you in every product that leaves our brewery.
Actually......eeew. That did sound gross. But you get the drift.
Risks and challenges
Once we've reached our goal on Kickstarter, there's still a lot to face: locating a suitable facility to house our brewing equipment (and most likely, some construction to bring it up to code), the actual manufacture and delivery of that equipment, and tons of regulatory paperwork at both the state and federal levels. As these steps will necessarily require us to depend on collaboration with others (manufacturers of equipment, contractors) and wait for government agencies to approve our plans, unwanted delays are entirely possible. We're already doing what we can to speed these processes - filing the paperwork we can file, researching local real estate and zoning, vetting contractors for the type of work we'll need. And the most important step we've taken is getting out there to befriend our community and find mentors within our industry. We've fostered great relationships with other brewers around Los Angeles, and they've been instrumental in offering guidance as we tackle each new challenge.
As we mentioned, our Kickstarter campaign will only take us so far. We're exploring every avenue we can (outside of taking on copious amounts of debt) - private investors, grants, and alternate fundraising sources like Kickstarter - to raise the $1 million we need to make our brewery and taproom a reality. A million bucks sounds like a lot of money. Heck - a million bucks IS a lot of money. But building a brewery - particularly a brewery and taproom in the heart of Los Angeles - is an incredibly cost-heavy goal. We firmly believe that our idea is a great one, and we also firmly believe that no matter what you've heard, L.A. is a city full of great people and big dreamers and beer-lovers. A community that supports local products made by, and for, local people. The ONLY place that we want to open our business, knowing fully that this community will support us and propel us toward success.
We can't guarantee that we'll raise all of our capital as quickly as we'd like. Or that constructing our brewery and tap room might not take a while. But we CAN guarantee this: we'll raise the money. We'll open the doors. We'll be successful. Because there is no back-up plan for any of us. And there's nothing we love more than brewing beer and sharing it with our friends and neighbors. We'll meet challenges head-on, and tackle them with tenacity. We'll be transparent when those challenges arise. But most importantly, we'll find success because we have a unique vision and create a quality product. However anxious you are as a backer for us to open our doors, rest assured that we're exponentially more so. We invite you to come along on the journey with us. Help us spread the word. Will it be challenging? Yes. But is it attainable? Absolutely.
