On September 16, 2004, Hurricane Ivan roared ashore at Gulf Shores, Alabama, and ravaged the Gulf Coast, wreaking destruction and shredding lives from Florida to Mississippi. The eye of Ivan glanced upward from the Gulf of Mexico and on toward the small town of Magnolia Springs, where local, Roberto Acosta, planned to ride out the storm in his home.
Now, staying home during a hurricane is a dangerous and harrowing proposition, but, when the calm of Ivan's eye looked down, Roberto braved the moment, and encountered...a hummingbird...right there, in that brief respite from tropical chaos...a hummingbird...alive and flitting...
From there, Roberto's imagination took flight on those buzzing wings, envisioning that hummingbird as messenger for a tiny people in need of shelter during that storm, a people who would teach him of matters beyond hurricanes, even beyond life itself...
Luckily for Roberto, his next door neighbor is one Amanda Rachels, artist extraordinaire of Inverse Press' Clown Town and Flesh of White and Arcana Studios' The Book. As part of his reward for backing Clown Town on Kickstarter, Roberto was due FULL ART (lines and color) on a story, and he chose the story of that hurricane-harried hummingbird and its imaginary handlers as the basis for that comic story.
Inverse Press partner - and writer of Clown Town, Roadkill du Jour and Last Ride for Horsemen - Kevin LaPorte, was tapped to adapt the story to a comic script from Roberto's memories and notes.
Thus was Eyes of the Hurricane born! It is a 20-page, self-contained comic featuring an inspirational tale of meaning found in a most unexpected circumstance.
Kevin LaPorte is the Mobile, Alabama-based writer and co-creator of genre comics with a horror bent - Last Ride for Horsemen, Roadkill du Jour, Clown Town & The Blind Eye! The worlds Kevin creates range from dark carnivals overrun by killer clowns violently avenging abused children (Clown Town) to dying frontier towns in the Old West beset by Steampunk versions of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (Last Ride for Horsemen) to the bayou territory of a lone motorcycle gangster seeking vengeance for his cursed appetite for street meat and the slaughter of his brothers-in-arms (Roadkill du Jour)! Kevin also contributed poetry and lyrics to Ancients & Warriors: The Sketch Art of Gavin Michelli, featuring the figure work of collaborator, Gavin Michelli.
Amanda Rachels' love of horror has been a heavy influence on her recent work, Clown Town, a tale of killer clowns with a twist, and Arcana Studios' The Book, which explores the dark side of traveling off the beaten path. She is a frequent contributor to Grayhaven Comics'The Gathering anthology (including several covers). Currently, she is adapting William Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus to graphic novel form with Kevin and continuing the Flesh of White series with writer, Erica J. Heflin.
