Annual Ladies of Hip-Hop Festival

This year: July 13th-15th NYC

Starting in 2004, this annual Hip-Hop festival focuses on women and their relationship with Hip-Hop culture. Ladies of Hip-Hop Festival  (LofHHF) exists to develop and provide women with positive roles that are present and represented within the Hip-Hop culture. Traditionally, men have dominated all facets of the hip-hop scene, but Ladies of Hip-Hop Festival changes this tradition and puts women center-stage for the entire event

The festival is an event produced by women, for women. Each year an elite group of female artists from around the world are selected to exhibit work, teach, and perform as part of the festival. The artists have extensive experience and understanding of the Hip-Hop culture and are qualified to pass on the traditions of Hip-Hop culture with accuracy and authenticity.

LofHHF is a driving force that has had an international impact on girls and women in hip-hop culture by producing events for women and girls to create and present their own work. LofHHF offers workshops, performance opportunities, international artist exchanges and public talks. LofHHF trains, educates, and creates the next generation of women in the Hip-Hop dance community.

In March of 2011, After 7 years in existence,  Ladies of Hip-Hop Festival went to Europe! In Partnership with Urban Arts & Culture of Austria, and the KosmosTheater, LofHHF debuted internationally in Vienna, Austria to three evenings of sold out shows, a jam packed panel discussion, and great workshops. It was a tremendous experience for the eight US instructors and performers, some traveling abroad for the first time ever. In the 10 days in Vienna LofHHF director, Michele Byrd-McPhee and dancers created a collaborative piece with Austrian artists. It was overwhelming success!

Continuing to grow our community LofHHF now has a training program, Ladies of Hip-Hop Training Crew Intensive. This program is a  3-month training intensive spent doing multidiscipline training in Hip-Hop styles, funk styles, and other dance styles that influence the culture like dancehall, African, Salsa, and more… This training program will be the springboard for many female Hip-Hop dancers and choreographers.

We are asking for your support for the annual festival to continue the work we do. Please make a pledge and share with your friends!

Thank you,

Michele

  • In Hip-Hop culture as a whole, women are underrepresented, and the representations shown are often are very negative, women are often portrayed as objects that exist purely for sexual gratification. This isrelevant because girls and women are bombarded everyday with an infinite number ofnegative images of women through television, magazine, and almost every form media andHip-Hop culture has fallen subject to the same use of women.Hip-Hop culture was born from the expressive manifestation of the past and currentexperiences as well as the collective consciousness of African-American and Latino-American male youth that has been transformed into a global force. It is being used to sellevery product mentionable from Vitamin water to shoes and clothing. You can referencealmost any MTV hip-hop music video and female dancers are repeatedly shown scantily clad, parading around male music artists.
