LVL simultaneously tracks your hydration, heart rate, and activity to help you optimize every workout, training set and race. It then prompts you in real-time, alerting to exactly how much fluid you need ( based off of current levels and sweat rates ) and what type of performance boost you can expect.
Sleep is one of the most important parts of your day. Research shows that people who sleep better feel better and think fast, and that hydration is one of the keys to unlocking a better night’s sleep.
LVL’s simple, clear interface provides the essential information at a glance on a rich full color OLED touch screen, with side buttons for additional input. It connects via BLE to your smartphone, sports watch, bike computer and other devices for a truly connected experience.
Word of mouth goes a long way, and we couldn’t have gotten where we are today without your passionate (vocal) support. So, to show our appreciation, we are going to give a FREE Kickstarter edition turquoise sport band to every backer who shares this project on Facebook or Twitter. Just click the button below to share!
The story of our beginnings is one of equal parts passion and obsession. It was one of those moments that’s terrifying when you’re going through it, but inspirational when you look back on it. The video below is of our founder and CEO who describes his inspiration for LVL and his shocking medical emergency that produced his passion for hydration monitoring.
LVL utilizes the same optical sensing technology that BSX developed for its first product, the BSXinsight, which measures lactate threshold in real time.
We've tested hundreds of athletes in our sweat lab for development of LVL–using gold standards in biometric sensing to refine the algorithms LVL uses to measure hydration.
We worked with frog, a world-renowned design and strategy firm, to translate LVL's technology to the wrist with an elegant design that is primed for mass production.
Unlike traditional devices on the market that use green light to measure heart rate from the wrist, we have spent the past four and a half years developing a revolutionary red light technology (actually near infrared light) that for the first time ever can measure dehydration, while also providing industry leading heart rate accuracy at the same time. Our red light sensor originates from the world of medical devices where accuracy is king. It can measure 10 times deeper into the body than green light can, which allows us to see more and measure it more accurate.
It all started right here with these people—researchers, medical specialists, analysts, engineers, designers and most of all, serious athletes—who set out on a personal mission to make hydration a conscious part of our daily lives.
Risiken und Herausforderungen
We know we can't make a high quality finished product without strong relationships with our suppliers and manufacturing partners. We have already started to build that foundation with the successful launch of our previous product (also launched on Kickstarter) and have spent the past three years nurturing and maturing those relationships along with our own expanding internal team. There will be some differences as we move into larger scale manufacturing of a mass market device and are building a comprehensive team of mentors, consultants, and industry advisors to help guarantee our success.
We are incredibly proud to have shipped our first Kickstarter product on time. While there are always timeline risks with product development, we have fully validated LVL technology in functioning prototypes and are confident that we will deliver a high quality finished product on time and defect free.
Will there be issues and concerns along the way? Yes is the only real answer. Our supporters will continuously be informed on the progress we're making towards delivering their order. If an unforeseen issue poses a potential delay to our timing, then we will be transparent and timely in our communication to the people who are making our growth a reality.
The passionate supporters who support LVL on Kickstarter are our most important asset. Thank you for believing in us. We will do whatever it takes to exceed your expectations. Thanks!

FAQs
-
Yes. LVL is BLE enabled, allowing it to communicate with phones, tablets, watches, bike computers and other connected devices.
This allows LVL to transmit real time notifications to the phone when it identifies important body trends as well as continuously stream heart rate and hydration data to other devices, such as watches.
-
Yes! LVL comes with a free mobile app (for Android and iOS) which provides a rich user experience of your current hydration level with real-time recommendations as well as the ability to see historical trends and patterns. The mobile app will be available for worldwide download.
-
LVL comes with on device memory to store your important data even when your phone is not nearby. This allows LVL to track and record on its own so that a phone is not required for real-time use. Once LVL detects your phone, it will automatically begin transmitting your stored data to the phone and syncing to your cloud-based account at onelvl.com via the free mobile app.
-
Yes, LVL has an IP67 water resistance rating. This means it is ok to exercise, sweat, shower and even take it swimming for brief periods of time (up to 30 minutes at 1 meter of submersion).
-
Yes. LVL will include a developer API to be able to integrate LVL data into third party applications. This includes hydration, heart rate, calories, steps and basic sleep quality data.
The SDK includes a library and multiple examples on how to communicate with the BLE interface of the LVL and will be available for mobile platforms (Obj-C, Swift, for iOS, Java for Android).
By being an early adopter of the SDK you will have direct influence on its feature set and evolution.

LVL directly measures the water content in the body using our proprietary and patented red light technology (NIRS). This red light is shined into the body using specialized and consumer grade LEDs. As the light passes through the body, each wavelength is absorbed and reshaped in a unique way that allows us to generate a spectrographic 'picture' of the water content and other physiologic activities happening in the body at that point in time. It is very similar to what happens when visible light hits our eyes, allowing us to see.
For example, as light from the sun hits a flower, it is either absorbed or reflected back to our eyes in a unique way that is characteristic of the pigments in that flower - its stem, leaves, petals, etc. These pigments either absorb the visible light or reflect it back to our eyes to create the perception of blue, green, purple or any other color. While our eyes produce photographic images of this pattern, the LVL creates a spectrographic image that contains information of water content and location, heart rate, blood flow and characteristics, etc.
For a more in-depth discussion of how red light technology works and the difference between the red light we use and the green light used in other optical watches, please read the following post on our blog. http://bit.ly/2cFz0Up

The optical technology used in LVL has been extensively tested and validated. It originates from the medical device industry where NIRS systems are FDA approved and used routinely in the Emergency Department, Operating Room, Nurseries and Intensive Care Units. In 2012 we spun this technology out of the hospital and into BSX Technologies with the goal of creating a consumer electronic device with similar performance and accuracy standards.
We have conducted thousands of clinical subject trials since that time to develop the technology insides LVL and validate its accuracy. The first product we developed using this technology, BSXinsight, included over 850 subject trials and has been independently validated by numerous third party research and performance institutions throughout the world.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18214811The technology used in LVL is a continuation and refinement of the same technology used in BSXinsight and is the result of the past 4.5 years of intense scientific discovery. We continue to conduct hundreds of clinical trials every month in our laboratories in Austin, TX. All of our hydration validation studies are conducted with and compared against medical gold standards. This includes blood measurements (serum osmolality, Hemoglobin / Hematorcit, Electrolytes), urine measurements (urine osmolality and urine specific gravity), and body weight changes. For heart rate we validate against EKG.
We have partnered with the Korey Stringer Institute at the University of Connecticut to conduct independent validation studies of LVL this next spring once beta units are complete.

Yes. LVL is safe to use for continuous, 24/7 wear. The red light technology in LVL stems for the medical device world where it has been used for decades in hospital applications. (think of the red light on patient's fingers that are widely used for measuring pulse oximetery) Many studies have been done demonstrating safety.

This is a great question, worthy of a several hour long medical discussion. The simple answer is this: you should always drink when you're thirsty. But the absence of thirst does not mean that you should stop drinking. Numerous studies have been done showing that the vast majority of us (over 75%) are in a chronic state of dehydration. This goes up to 90%+ in elderly populations where the thirst drive is not as strong and access can be more difficult. The presence of fats and sugars in our diet can significantly depress the thirst drive. Even athletes are not immune, where recent studies have shown that during exercise, athletes who drink at will only consume 30-70% of the actual volume lost. Furthermore scientists at Purdue have shown that people seldom drink then they're thirsty, instead they simply drink when they eat.
Why this happens is a more difficult question and many very good theories exist. But due to the complexities of the hydration equation (gender, body mass, age, BMR and sweat rate, temperature, altitude, humidity, exercise, amount of fluid consumed through food, etc) it is a very difficult and individualized questions to answer. This is why generalized recommendations of 8 glasses of water per day are so inaccurate and real-time measurement is so important.
