Wow- what an honor to know that people really and truly want to see a film like this created.THANK YOU! We met our goal and with just a few days left, you still have the opportunity to make a difference.
What happens if we exceed our goal? Kickstarter allows us to keep the extra funding and there is no limit to exceeding our mark. The extra funding will pay for room and board, meals and transportation expenses while in Haiti.
What can you do by Tuesday April 12th? Contribute if you have not done so and continue to spread the word. Also, if you have buddy passes and hotel vouchers that will help a whole lot!
Until we get the necessary grants and investors, we are starting this project "Gorilla style!" Which means once Kickstarter and Amazon get their fees, we are left with a portion of the funds to pay for equipment needs and airfare (ONLY) for 3. NO ONE IS GETTING PAID and we are in the process of rooming with family and friends to get PHASE I completed. We anticipate that this film will be completed by Spring of 2012.
If you chose to receive a reward for donating, all rewards (with the exception of a copy of the film and the Tabou Combo Meet and Greet) will be mailed in a couple of weeks. . . YEAH!
So please if you have not contributed, please do so today!
Thank you again to all those who have donated.
About La Belle Vie : The Good Life In "La Belle Vie: The Good Life", I will be taking the viewers on a journey by going beyond the surface to expose the “other side” of the Haitian society. By using my family as a case study intertwined with interviews from experts, journalists and historians, this documentary will examine several themes from questioning class and prejudice in Haiti, to dealing with cultural identity in America, to exhibiting the beauty of Haiti’s culture. This film will also explore the invisible umbilical cord that Haitians living abroad and non-Haitian’s have with Haiti by capturing their inspiring stories of hope and their dedication in helping Haiti rebuild. "La Belle Vie: The Good Life" will be a poignant, humorous and important glimpse into a community that has been little understood and much maligned.
Why am I creating La Belle Vie: The Good Life? Many Haitians and people who have a Haitian connection can attest, the dialogue of class, prejudice and race is extremely needed to give the public a telling story that is seldom seen in the mainstream media. Growing up in the 80’s in Harlem, no one believed I was Haitian because of the perception of what they got from the news outlets. “Haitian Booty Scratchers, Haiti is the birth place of H.I.V., H.B.O. (Haitian Body Order) Haitian go back to your nation!!. . .” These were just a few of the malicious taunts that a kid of Haitian descent would battle with day to day living in America. In contrast, it’s been 1 year since the 7.0 Earthquake hit Haiti and although there is great stagnation on the part of the government to quickly rebuild my beloved country, this tragic event has inspired Haitians abroad and non-Haitians alike to come to its aid. It is this undeniable love for Haiti, which has inspired me to create "La Belle Vie . . ."
How We Plan to Use the Funds Just in its 1st phase of production, my team and I will be able to embark to Haiti to bring the story to life. Funds will be used for the production and travel expenses for this film. Again all of your donations are tax-deductible courtesy of FePouLi.org, a non-profit organization based in Miami that empowers and mentors Haitian immigrant kids by promoting literacy through the use of poetry and “conflict resolution” workshops.
How Kickstarter works ALL of the donated money (minus fees for Kickstarter and Amazon) will go directly to the making of La Belle Vie: The Good Life. So what’s the cool thing? You are directly affiliated with the making of this film. I have 90 days to reach or exceed my goal. Once the 90 days are up, all funds (minus fees for Kickstarter and Amazon), goes directly to the production of "La Belle Vie: The Good Life" and I can begin my journey in making this amazing documentary. As producers of this film, you get rewards for donating and will be the first to get a copy of the film once its completed depending on your pledge. You can donate from anywhere (even from Haiti) and no donation is too small or too big! Another cool thing is if I do not reach my goal by 90 days everyone gets his or her money back and no one gets a reward. So it’s all or nothing opportunity!
How do I get my Rewards? As soon as my goal is realized and the 90 day pledge drive is complete , we will send out your rewards except for the film. We anticipate that the documentary will be finished in early 2012. During that time we will notify you about shipping details to send out your personal copy of "La Belle Vie: The Good Life."
My journey only acts as a door to everyone's connection to Haiti and it's contribution to the world. This is a universal story that will touch the hearts and minds of people who can identify how a nation has managed to find hope and triumph in the midst of tragedy.
Word of mouth is powerful . . . so please spread the word to your family and friends. Your support is greatly valued!
