The main difference is the Domination Points system (60 to win) has changed to a Victory Point system (5 to win). Victory points are gained by having more relics on the board than your opponent at the start of your turn. Relics act to symbolise the equivalent of controlling a location in the digital game. This decision was made for two reasons. Firstly the counting of Domination Points simply wasn’t much fun and secondly we believe that placements or removals of tokens should be a gameplay decision, not an automatic one like in the digital game. Therefore the Victory Points system adds an important new strategy to the game where you have to decide which tiles to place relics on and when to remove them.
A second difference is that cards now have a value for Health in addition to Power. We found this way of playing was much more enjoyable in combination with Power and Damage tokens than replicating what the computer does in the digital game.
Finally we have what isn’t so much a difference but actually an exciting addition to the game. Now the battlegrounds (game board) can be chosen and constructed by the players and there can also be more than 2 players! It is possible to play with 3 or 4 players and so there can be more than 2 strongholds on the battleground at once and there can be more tiles than the maximum 5 x 5 grid in Cabals: Magic & Battle cards.
Overall however the essence of the game, overall tactics are exactly what we all love from the digital game!
