Topography-inspired watercolor paintings that highlight the beauty of your state - our homes.
When I started my business, Washed in Watercolors, trying to paint a state silhouette was just a neat idea. One night I ran back to my studio with a few inks and some paper and the rough outline in my mind of a state and it's topography. That night, the Virginia State Gemstone painting was created, and it jumpstarted my business. To this day I have sold more state topography paintings than any other type offered in my shop. Soon I was getting requests for other states, and that inspired this project. I would love to see all 50 states completed, with their own topography and beauty embodied in gemstone colors and shimmering details.
But I can't do this without you.
What will this project fund?
The money raised in this campaign will provide for the inks, paints, and paper needed to paint these, as well as the printing fees to make them accessible to you all. Any additional funds will be poured back into my business so we can pursue the next great idea and support growth.
What is in it for you?
Beyond joining this incredible community of supporters and getting updates on where we go from here, you also get some awesome take-home rewards. All of the options involve a print of at least one of my state paintings (the $6 backing option will get a digital download of a print.) All my prints are done on metallic paper which add even more depth and brilliance to these already shimmering pieces. For reward levels that offer multiple prints, you will be given the option to select any state for each print.
There are a variety of sizes, bundles and "mosaics" to choose from. Here is an example of a mosaic region:
There are so many things we would like to be able to do, but right now they are a little out of reach. If we blow past our $800 goal, here are the exciting things that await!
$1,200 - Free Mosaic of all 50 states - 5x7 print for all reward levels $55 and above.
$2,000 - Get the option to have your states printed on metal or mounted on styrene for sleek, modern displays. This will be an add-on option at the completion of the campaign. Surveys will be completed through BackerKit.
$3,000 - We will paint the topography of the Great Lakes (this has been a very popular request). We will also paint Canada and Mexico, and you can then choose any of these in place of a state in any of the rewards or bundles. You can also add any of these on at the end if you don't want to tweak your original selection.
*NEW* $4,000 - Up to this point, we made a mosaic of all the states, then I will paint Canada, the Great Lakes, and Mexico. Now let's put them all together! I will make a mosaic of the entirety of North America, from Alaska to Mexico, with the Great Lakes included! This will be an add-on option in various sizes.
[Oh, and shipping will open up to EVERY COUNTRY! Shipping costs will vary depending on destination. Your total will be calculated at the completion of reward surveys.]
$5,000 - You have helped us paint the whole of North America, now let's paint the world. If we reach $5,000 we will paint a map of the whole world and all reward levels $8 and up will receive a Free 5x7" print.
$8,000 - WOW! We can barely keep up with you all! Thank you so much for getting us this far! To say thank you we want to give you some fantastic upgrades. Since we will be sending all of you a world map, why not make it even better? We will upgrade the 5x7" print to a Styrene print for reward levels $55-$149 and a Metal print for reward levels $150 and up.
$10,000!!! - If we make it there before the campaign ends at 2pm EST on Saturday(4/1/17), everyone at reward tiers $8-$99 will get a $5 credit, and any one $100 and up will get a $10 credit to use in the BackerKit store that will come with your reward surveys. This means that those upgrades and add-ons you've been eyeing may just be in reach!
Differences between framed and unframed metallic prints:
I printed my favorite piece for myself and had it mounted on styrene. I love it because you don't lose the pearlescent sheen of the metallic paper behind the reflective glass. Obviously, it's fine either way, as demonstrated in all of the customer review photos who put them behind glass. But if you're leaning toward styrene and want some clarification on the benefit, here are some photos.
If you can tell, without the frame, the leaf image only has pearly reflections but you can still see the sheen of the metallic paper, which is totally lost in the frame. Obviously, I can't sit this 5x7 print on a shelf, so that's where the styrene comes in. Here's another example of the difference in reflections:
If you don't want the reflections, and you're fine with not framing it, but you'd like to have the option to frame it later, this is what one person did. She has a 5x7 custom map of OBX mounted on styrene, and she put it in a glass-less frame. It feels finished but she didn't loose any sheen.
More About the Process
This is a very fluid technique, and can be very finicky, but challenge just adds to the fun! Here are some photos of paintings in progress:
Why do people love them?
Well, since I have sold the states I have done up to this point, why don't I let the reviews speak for themselves?
"I loved the prints from the moment I opened them. They are absolutely gorgeous and I hung them as soon as I could get them in a frame. The colors are vibrant and just as they appear in her shop. The prints were on metallic paper and are stunning. I can't say enough great things about how gorgeous these pieces are. I absolutely love them and will definitely be buying more in the future! Thank you for everything!" - Courtney L. [West Virginia, Custom Kentucky, Custom Argentina, and Virginia for a friend.]
"From the moment I saw these pieces of art on Instagram until they arrived at my home they have brought such fascination and wonder. They're even more stunning in person and are such unique and mesmerizing creations! The artist is extremely professional and did the California state for me upon request." - Makenzie B. [Tennessee and Custom California]
"I am so happy with my 5x7 Virginia print! Not only does it bring life to my bare walls, it also represents a place I call home. My only thing is, I wish I had bought a bigger print! If you are a traveler, like myself, this is the perfect little present to give to host or friends along your journey. I know that's what I will be doing for my next trip :)" - Emma K. [Virginia]
"Absolutely love this! The beauty of her artwork cannot be put into words." -Tiffany F. [Tennessee and Virginia]
"I received my watercolor print in the mail and I immediately wished I had bought a bigger one. I was SO pleased with the quality of the image and the way it was shipped. The photo is absolutely beautiful and is currently sitting in my "favorite things" basket. I plan to order a much larger one in the future to put on the wall. Amazing artwork!" - Megan D. [Virginia and Tennessee for a friend.]
"I love everything about this watercolor! Kyra has an incredible talent that is visible with everything she does. This brings joy to my heart every time I look at it. It has a special place in my home reminding me of where I'm from. Couldn't be more pleased! Thank you, Kyra!" - Leslie K. [Indiana]
Where will we go from here?
I love this technique, and I have so many ideas of how to implement it. I would love to do the topography of national parks in the silhouettes of leaves from that park, like this bur oak leaf:
So if anyone has connections to the National Parks Service, and want's to connect us, hit me up!
I could also do a similar thing with certain beach or island satellite images in sea shell silhouettes. These are projects your support will fund!
But sometimes I get tired of prints and digital media. Sometimes I want to get my hands dirty and make an original piece for someone's home. I recently discovered resin art, and I think it would be a good fit with the current direction of my business. Here is a piece I completed last week:
If you choose the Queen or King reward levels, you will receive a resin and wood piece of your own.
I'm so excited for this journey with all of you.
Let's go make beautiful things.
Risks and challenges
Once the project is funded I will be working many hours a day to research and accurately paint each state. Upon completing the paintings, I will be prepping them to print, creating the mosaics, and ordering all of your wonderful rewards. On top of all that, I am still completing and fulfilling custom orders from my Etsy shop. All this while taking care of a toddler will be our family's biggest challenge.
