It's finally time. After more than 10 years since my last recordings, I have been preparing to release my songs in a year-long project that will push me on every level as an artist. For years I have been patiently waiting for the right timing to share my music. Recently I've had a burning desire to assemble my best songs, finish them (musically, lyrically) and record them with a full, professional sound. Most of you who know me probably haven't even heard many of my songs! It was never because I was afraid, lazy, or a perfectionist who couldn't settle on something that I could be proud of. It was really just about timing. One of my mentors taught me that authors often publish their books prematurely, unaware that their book could have made a bigger impact if they had waited for the right season. So I've been patient to share my songs - they have to go through an incubation period until a certain "weight" can be felt on them, and the weight is heavy now! At the same time, life has its twists and turns, and throws its punches, and the path we envision for ourselves is rarely the road we currently walk. But I'm a blessed man, and I am so excited to finally undergo the process of bringing my songs to life this next year. Just the thought of having the best songs in my catalogue professionally recorded and mixed is reason alone to do all of this. So come join me on this adventure - I believe it will be equally rewarding for you!
I am planning on finally releasing my music - 52 songs in all - in a life-changing project that will take the entire year of 2016 to complete. Each and every week, I will be releasing a new song. From raw anthems to elegant ballads, from candid folk-songs to daring electronic explorations, I'm moving in all artistic directions with no need to pigeonhole my style or please a record label. As you can imagine, this is a HUGE undertaking. It is extremely rare for an artist to release 4-5 album's worth of material in one year. But spending five years releasing these songs didn't seem like the right approach, so I'm working under the motto "Go Big or Go Home."
In regards to music, I've never felt the need to do things the traditional way that artists have in the industry. I'm really not tied to it. Making a traditional album and touring to generate revenue and create a fan base has little appeal to me. So my approach? It's simply giving. I have no control over whether 10 or 10,000 people listen to my songs, and have no need to attach my songs to a dollar value, and spend my effort convincing people to buy my product. The proof's in the pudding, and I believe when you hear this collection of songs over the course of the year, the quality of my music won't really be determined by numbers, views, or downloads. I will be giving away all my music entirely for free - I won’t be making any profit from my songs - because I want to treat them as a gift to bless other people.
I've spent this last year making a spreadsheet of all my songs, then slowly whittling them down to my best 52, making sure the music, lyrics, and arrangements are ready for recording. I'm also working with a web-designer on a clean, tasteful website that streams the music and features the story behind each song - perhaps the creative process, the lyrical intent, or even my own journey with the particular theme at hand. Additionally, full lyrics and images will compliment the songs. I will also be posting my music on YouTube, SoundCloud, and eventually on Spotify and other online services - I want to reach people in whatever environment or medium they are comfortable with, for their enjoyment and inspiration.

I am seeking to raise $20,000 as the initial goal for the project. This is the bare minimum to cover mixing, mastering, copyright fees, and Kickstarter costs.
While $20,000 might seem like a lot, it's actually extremely reasonable considering the sheer volume I will be releasing. With 52 songs, it comes out to a little under $400 per song, which is really inexpensive. The beauty of this project is that I am able to use my engineering, production, and musical skills without having to pay for studio time, engineers, session players, and more. My main cost is the mixing - I'll be working with a longtime friend, Brook Floyd, to mix all these songs. Brook is a grammy-nominated engineer who knows my music and vision well, and we're excited to get back together on such an ambitious project.
So $20,000 is the minimum I need to raise in order to pull off this recording project. The tricky part about Kickstarter is that I MUST reach my goal of $20,000 in order to receive any of the money, but the fantastic part is that if we exceed the goal, I can put the extra funds toward improving and expanding the project!
From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for even taking the time to check this project out! I hope you can join with me in making this vision a reality. This campaign is only a month long, and it's ALL OR NOTHING - I must reach my goal of $20,000 or the project won't be funded. It's going to take all of us to join together and make this work, but I promise I will put in blood, sweat, and tears to bring these songs to life. Would you please support me and make a pledge today?
All my love,
Risks and challenges
This project has 52 risks - every week, the process of bringing a song to life through recording can go in a million directions. Sometimes I might be five hours into it and have to start from scratch. But I'm confident in my production skills that I can work efficiently, make crucial decisions, and stay positive throughout each week.
The greatest challenge is without a doubt time management. I teach songwriting full-time at Interlochen Center for the Arts, and maintain a regular client-base through my music production website, www.mysongalive.com. But my family is what's most important to me and what I absolutely cherish. My wife will be having our third child in March, so it will certainly be a busy year! But we've been working hard to make a recording schedule that is organized, efficient, and creative-inducing. Having 3 months off in the summer will be a crucial time to get ahead with my recordings and prepare for the last half of my project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
