About

Hi! I'm Kyle Bronsdon, a singer-songwriter and piano player with five self-released albums and a weekly live webcast every Tuesday night since 2007. I've had some pretty crappy studios - a concrete garage, a plywood shed - and, for the last year or so, a 40' fifth-wheel RV. While the RV at least has good air conditioning, it's not terribly inspiring.

Enter The Laconian: A 1946 Spartan Manor travelcoach, the Rolls Royce of travel trailers in its time, costing half as much as the average home. I found #25-46-54, the fifty-fourth one ever made by the Spartan Aircraft Company. I've been rebuilding it with my far more knowledgeable and resourceful friend, John Strasser.

The original owner worked at the Bright Angel Lodge on the rim of the Grand Canyon for 40 years, and added a bathroom and other "upgrades" over the years. John and I took a good couple months just to gut the thing down to the frame.

We've replaced the hitch coupler and jack stand, breakaway switch, etc (as Johnny says, "Safety third!"), replaced the entire floor and bellypan, and installed new 1/4" Lexan windows into wood framing that John beautifully hand-formed, stained, and varnished. One of the most dramatic changes was the trolley top we fabricated almost entirely from scratch, sans the 14 foot long piece of the roof we cut out.

Well, NOW we're getting ready to make it BEAUTIFUL. We plan to use the same stained and varnished birch paneling and linoleum flooring that the trailer came with from the factory 67 years ago. We're well-insulating it with rockwool, rewiring it, and will soon install a Mitsubishi mini split air conditioner and heat pump. After that, custom soffit mounted studio reference speakers, deco sconces, a nixie tube clock, and a battery bank. You can see some of my inspirations on my Pinterest page.

Here's some 3D design work I've been doing...imagine a couple little bistro tables where the drums are, and the desk folding away into the bulkhead.

The whole idea of the mobile piano bar occurred to me after I'd fallen in love with the early Spartan travelcoaches and had already decided to get one for my personal studio and office. One of the toughest parts of being an independent musician is finding venues to perform at and, driving home from Prescott, AZ after looking at another '46 Manor, it hit me in a flash - Why not have my OWN venue, in one of these?

Sparta was the capitol of Laconia and, while I'm not going to claim to be the Leonidas of independent artists, we shouldn't forget the hundreds of Laconians that fought with the brave 300. The music industry is the Persian empire in my little metaphor, here. And the Hot Gates? That's the battleground of American culture.

I've always preferred more intimate performances, and this is a natural progression from the shows I've been simulcasting for 6 years from my various home studios and the five months I spent in a cozy piano bar on a Carnival cruise ship. The steampunk aesthetic is trending significantly. Food trucks are taking off all over the country (even one in a '46 Manor). House concerts are growing in popularity. I think these are all indications that people (Americans in particular) are hungry not just for inexpensive quality food, but for ANYTHING well made, hand crafted with personality and pride, and a feeling of being connected.

Don't you think?

Imagine what a blast it would be to get a Tweet from me that the lounge will be on 4th Avenue tonight at 8pm and you RSVP for your reserved seat! How about inviting a bunch of your friends over to your house, where The Laconian gleams in the driveway, Yours Truly crooning away inside at the keyboard of my Charles R. Walter. Both of these scenarios are different ways I'll say "Thank you" depending on how much you dig my vision and what you can contribute to realize it.

Risks and challenges

This is first and foremost a personal project. I've personally financed the project up to this point, and I won't stop until it's complete. The assistance I'm asking from you is really mostly to help my wife sleep better - I've planned the budget to what I expect I can get for the RV I'm in now - and I would like to not have to skimp on quality materials, but the bank account is getting uncomfortably low while I show the RV to people from Craigslist.

I'd like to put in a good inverter and enough batteries (maybe even a couple solar panels) to run the lights and air conditioning for a few hours so I can perform anywhere. Pretty much that alone kills my budget, and it's critical to the "mobile" aspect.

Now, the new album I'm promising, that might not get done by December. Can't force inspiration! But I do have a handful of great material already and, when I get inside that glowing birch interior, looking out the iconic wraparound windows at the Tucson mountains over the hand signed pin block of the piano, I can tell you inspiration will be there. Hoo! Gives me shivers just thinking about it!

I'd estimate we're about 2/3 of the way through the project. Although I'm aiming to have already taken The Laconian out on a maiden voyage and then some by December, we've lost several weeks since September to everything from car trouble to snow. Yes, snow. In Tucson. So that timeline could be set back.

I'm trying to think worst case scenarios here, and I just have to say again: This is a personal project I've been completely obsessed with since last year. It WILL be completed. With your help, it could be even BETTER than I've planned for, AND you'll be helping the poor spouse of a freelance musician! As well as helping the musician :)
