Slow down... take pen to paper again.
You've used thousands of pens throughout your life, but have those pens meant anything to you?
It's time for a pen that inspires you to create, a pen worthy of your greatest ideas. Make your mark with the MARK pen.
"When you have the right pen, it actually helps you. It's a weirdly inspirational thing. You feel like you rise to it somehow. (...) This is a tool that is a bridge between the 'what ifs' and the final product. And that's a priceless thing to have."
- J.J. Abrams in Vanity Fair Interview
NOTE: For anyone pledging for a pen, don't worry about selecting a color now. There will be a survey that goes out to ask for that!
Putting pen to paper. It’s how we learned to communicate, solve problems, express our creativity.
Despite technology all around us, the desire to write, create, and draw has not disappeared, and paper and pen inspire us in a way that typing on phones and tablets simply cannot. We believe people already know this. Just look at the number of amazing planners, journals, and notebooks out there today!
But what about the pen? A pen used to be something to be proud of. But today most pens are cheap, made of low quality plastics, and super unreliable. Others are older, traditional luxury fountain and rollerball pens, costing many hundreds, even thousands, of dollars. Unnecessary markups.
We believe there’s a need for a beautiful modern pen that inspires, without breaking the bank. And that’s why we decided to make the MARK.
The MARK is:
1. Inspired by beautiful Scandinavian design. It has a perfect center balance, a smooth thin profile, and unmistakable slanted cap.
2. Built under a philosophy of minimalism & simplicity, there are no frills or unnecessary features. It's about having a pen that doesn't compromise the essentials in favor of gimmicks and features.
3. Using the highest quality in raw material, coatings, finishes, and ink. The exact same ink found in rollerball pens priced at hundreds if not thousands of dollars more.
It's a pen that we hope will INSPIRE creators. If our pen can make even one person write, draw, journal, brainstorm, or create on paper again... then we'll consider ourselves very happy campers.
Without further ado, let's show you what the MARK is all about.
The MARK is designed, QA'ed, finished, and assembled in San Francisco. Our ink cartridges are German-engineered by a world renown ink manufacturer and every part of the pen is meticulously looked at by multiple human beings before being delivered to you.
We hold ourselves to the highest possible standards, inspired by some of the best products in the world.
The MARK is milled out of a solid piece of the highest grade brass we could find. It is then plated, coated multiple times, and finished to make sure it can deal with the wear & tear of everyday life.
At the end of the day, we designed this pen to last a lifetime (or two).
What is a good looking pen if it doesn't write well? Good news is the MARK comes with one of the highest quality fine-tipped ceramic rollerball cartridges in the world. We have no complaints- it dries quickly, comes in blue, black, and red, lasts respectably long, can remain cap-less, and writes consistently.
Trust us, we've tested hundreds of ink capsules - we dare you to find a smoother one out there!
We believe writing is essential to creativity & innovation. We feel so strongly about this that we'll be giving back to organizations who believe the same mission.
A portion of the profits from every pen will go to supporting two incredible Bay Area non-profits (Youth Speaks & 826 National), dedicated to helping students, ages 6-18, improve their creative writing skills.
Attention to detail is our middle name. From the unboxing experience, to the product itself, we’re not going to skimp on anything.
And if you have any questions or issues along the way, we’re making it our #1 priority to help you out. Customer service will never be a tertiary thing for us, that’s a promise.
Blush - One of the most desirable of rose gold varietals.
Onyx - A matte black oxide. Dark and stormy.
Gold - Nothing glitters quite as beautifully as gold.
Slate - A color we're currently in testing with, but will nail down shortly! Industrial and raw like pictured, or matte and clean like a space gray (see middle color in the palette below).
Let us know what you would prefer in your backing if you choose this option! If we end up going one way, and you'd prefer the other, we'll definitely make sure you still leave happy.
Specifications: • Length: 4.96 inches • Weight: 1.45 ounces • Maximum Diameter: 0.39 inches.
Specifically for our Kickstarter backers, we'll be offering the MARK at a discount before launching our e-commerce website. Early birds will get an even better discount!

Hi everyone, my name is Mark Kwak, founder of the MARK pen! I'm a student of design, a passionate consumer products person, and overall a life enthusiast. It's been my dream for a very long time to create a physical good that people would appreciate and enjoy in their everyday lives, and that's why I'm so excited to FINALLY, after over a year of working at it, bring this pen to you.
Though the end-product is simply a writing tool, I truly hope that this pen inspires people to go out there and write the movie script they've been thinking about, or journaling their deepest thoughts onto paper again, or brainstorming ideas that can change the world. As someone who's worked in tech for many years, I know that my experience of going back to pen and paper has certainly changed the way I work and think, and I hope others can experience that for themselves as well.
Thank you so much to everybody viewing this Kickstarter, it means the world to me. Looking to ring in 2018 strong!
This pen could not exist without the help of so many amazing people.
To name a few, special thank you to product designer Tanya Retherford, packaging and design specialist Kayla Griffin, director of photography Gavin Murray, social media expert Catherine Min, manufacturing guru Geary Sampson, copywriter Esther Suh, Jake Martin from Commonwealth, Elaina Bruna from 826, Derick McGee and Tara Dorabji of Youth Speaks and so many more folks that helped in the many iterations we went through to get here…
Also, a big thanks to Renee Wong, Charles Hug, Venkat Mocherla, Naytri Schroff, Ronny Li, Luke Kwak, Laura Gravely, Jan Sramek, and Rachel Lord for making the Kickstarter video a possibility.
The MARK pen could not have been made without all of you.
And of course, thanks to YOU for checking out the MARK Kickstarter page. Without you, there is no way any of this is possible, so we sincerely thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Join us and #makeyourMARK
Risks and challenges
There will always be some risks and challenges along the way, but the good news is that we’ve been prototyping this beautiful pen for more than a year now, and finally feel like we have a product worthy of peoples’ expectations.
We also expect to fulfill all Kickstarter orders in an expedited manner, but it is possible that the production schedule may shift based on the number of orders we receive. There are many pieces to the puzzle (ink + packaging + pen body + etc.), but we believe we are working with some of the best folks out there who can field any level of demand appropriately.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
