About this project
In 2017 the Kunstverein in Hamburg is celebrating its 200th anniversary as one of Germany’s key non-profit institutions for contemporary art. Celebrating this achievement and after a three- year long research, together with the Department of Art History at University Hamburg, the Kunstverein seeks to launch a Digital Archive. Starting from 1817 the project will establish a systematic and sustainable method of preserving our rich archive. The success of this project will allow a broad community of users to search the archive rapidly and comprehensively from anywhere at any time, making this indispensable information accessible to scholars, librarians, students, and everyday internet users.

Why Kunstverein in Hamburg?
The Kunstverein in Hamburg is a non-profit art space dedicated to promoting contemporary art and its discourses. Our institution looks back at a highly successful history of promoting the most promising and experimental artists in their generations including Caspar David Friedrich, Jackson Pollock or Cosima von Bonin, to name a few. Committed to the highest standards of artistic production and its education, the Kunstverein has served as a platform for new talents, challenged already established artists, rediscovered less-known positions and fostered appreciation for contemporary discourses.
The Kunstverein hosts six to seven exhibitions annually in a vast industrial gallery space in Hamburg. These exhibitions, combined with a regular, to the public accessible program series, provide a significant forum for contemporary, international cultural dialogue in the fields of visual and performing arts.
