"Fear The Reivers" Role-playing Game
A 500+ Page Book - A Historical / Mythical Role-playing Game set in the Lawless Borderlands of 16th Century England and Scotland.
Welcome to the Project Pitch for my up and coming Role-Playing Game, “Fear the Reivers”. My name is Darren Taylor. I live in the Derbyshire Peak District, United Kingdom. It is a place where history cries out from every dry stone wall, church and house. It inspired me to search out my genealogy and create the “Fear the Reivers” Role- Playing Game. The game is part Historical and part Mythical and inspired by the Border Clans that existed a couple of hundred miles north of my home. I have been a Player and Games Master in role –playing games since I is 12 years old. At time of writing that means I have over 34 years’ experience in this wonderful hobby. I started off with the original boxed set of D&D and AD&D and have never looked back. I am still as fascinated by Role-Playing Games as I was back then. I am ecstatic when I catch the smell of a new Game or Rulebook, the sorting, painting of figures and deciding which ones will represent the characters in the story I want to tell. I have seen plenty of changes in my time. Games have evolved and become very sophisticated in both their rules and content. Card Games became a niche part of the hobby. There has also been the growth of the Gaming “multi-nationals”.
Back in the early 1980’s all Roleplaying was independent. Of course games followed similar formats, but they felt different. There are numerous independent stockists of metal figures, and roleplaying books. Half of the fun was discovering new ranges, new games and building them into the stories you wanted to tell. For me the growth of the “multi-nationals” has been positive in keeping the hobby alive for a new generation. That said, it also creates the kind of generic approach that can stifle smaller Gaming companies. There is a whole generation out there that think moving armies of Orcs and Space Marines around a table top is Roleplaying. In reality that is War-gaming and it is where our hobby started, but certainly not where it ends. “Fear the Reivers” RPG will be my first full game foray into our great hobby, but I can assure you it won’t be the last. I intend to update the game with regular source material at a supported website and also look to take my Die-chotomy System into a whole new range of Historical and Mythical Roleplaying Games. My Company,Jackdaw RPG Limited will support and advertise small independent Gaming Companies and Figure Suppliers and hopefully build that “Independent and Fun” feel back into the hobby for generations to come.
Risks and challenges
I have been working on this project for over 2 years and I have finalised the 70+ Page Quick Start Rulebook which I plan to launch as a free PDF on the respected Role-Playing Publisher "RPG Now". This will create initial interest in the Game amongst an International RPG Community.
I am well on the way to finishing the first draft of the Main Rule-book. I require the funding to create unique Art-Work for the 500+ Page Main Rule-book and have the money to create an initial set of printed hard copies for sale in Role-Playing shops and Amazon.
I am very driven and have had stories published in various magazines in the past. I have diligently studied my source material on the Border Reivers and had contact from renowned Historians to bring researched reality to the Game.
It will be an exciting game which will have a huge appeal to both existing Role-Players and War-gamers, but will also carry enough Historical content to interest many other people.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
