About this project
Have you ever wanted to learn how to make an angry bird fly?
Do you dream of creating a game?
Would you like to create a simple app for your business?
Do you want to make money from home, by programming an app?
Magikai can help! Through videos and interactive lessons, learning to code and making apps is not only accessible, but it's also fun!
How it works
No installation. Open up a browser and access your app maker right away!
Zero setup. Create your app without any configurations!
Infinite customization. Customize any part of the interface. (There will also be a plugin system for the app maker.)
Create your app on an iPad or even an iPhone!
Integrated video instruction As the instructor speak in the video, his code sample shows in the instructor pane. He can run the code. You can run the code.
Great for kids who are just starting out in programming and for parents who want to learn alongside the kids!
With our step-by-step integrated video lessons, you'll learn how to:
- Create multi-page apps, list apps, map apps, and more!
- Share your app with others, without the app store.
- Submit through Android and iOS.
Watch as it comes alive! Write your code in the center window, and watch as your code instantly takes effect in the right window. Plus, the drag and drop user interface component lets you drag a button, textbox, checkbox, and more into the window and it instantly appears in your app!
The technical stuff
Our cloud IDE works in browser and generates native mobile apps for iOS and Android.
- Native support. Currently, we use Phonegap for the HTML5 to native converter. We will support titanium soon.
- Git/SVN repository support. Point to your git or svn repository and you get an interactive navigator to grab code and data. QR download support.
- QR code support for app downloading. Share your app without the app store!
Push your app to the web!
We have also developed a Cloud Desktop solution, which will allow Magikai to push your app onto the web. For more details, check out kulapa.com!
Progress so far
We have been working on HTML5 products for over 2 years now. The working prototype for Magikai in the video is less than a year old.
We Need Your Help!
Our bootstrapped, 2 year startup is running on very little capital, a lot of us have full time jobs, and we are spending whatever spare time we have to build this project. We need support and donations from people to make the project a reality.
We also want to provide free services to schools, libraries, and low-income families.
With your help, we'll be able to:
- Add features not yet in prototype
- Convert prototypes into production ready client and server
- Get codebase ready for open-source
- Continue to add great products for HTML5!
Additional worthy goals:
- 60K - Add support for Blackberry and Windows 8 Phone
- 150K - Lots more interactive video lessons for HTML5
- 220K - Lots more interactive video lessons for game making
- 350K - Integration with 2D game engines, and debugging support for games. RPG app templates. Create your own RPG app easily!
- 800K - Did someone say gangnam style?
How did you come up with the word "Magikai"?
We wanted a name that sounded Hawaiian but also conveyed a sense of magic. Unfortunately, the word "magic" in Hawaiian is ho'okalakupuna. Yup, ho'okalakupuna. After trying to pronounce and remember the word, we wanted to take a nap, so Magikai came to being.
Kickstarter is awesome. We want our project to be open-source and community driven. We want HTML5 to succeed.
Will Magikai be open-sourced?
Can I contact the team for some personal questions?
Yes! Please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We read ALL our emails!
What is a license?
With the license, you’ll have a year of free access to Magikai hosted at Kulapa. And in order to download packaged distribution, you'll also need a license. The licensing system also enables us grow and build even more HTML5 tools for you! Check out our homepage kulapa.com!
When is alpha access, and when is beta?
Alpha access is scheduled for March 2013 and beta is scheduled for June 2013.
(Alpha is early access to the software, while we’re still working out the kinks. Beta is access to the software after most of the kinks have been ironed out.)
When does the t-shirt ship?
Can you deliver?
We believe so. Our team is made up of people from Google, Visa, Sapient, Agilent, IGN, Caltech, Berkeley, and USC.

Risks and challenges
Our innovative team is comprised of individuals who are dedicated, driven, and full of energy and ideas. Given our level of commitment and enthusiasm, we’re taking steps to minimize the likelihood of underestimating the time it will take to convert our current codebase to open-source code. We have open-source project leaders who are providing us with guidance, and our experienced team - made up of people from Google, Visa, Sapient, Agilent, IGN, Caltech, Berkeley, and USC - is ready to tackle this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
