Risks and challenges
As with all software projects we have a range of risks to navigate:
Educational Expertise: We already have some expertise from the many historical eLearning projects we have delivered & the fact we are real parents! But we do not have enough, we need to recruit more educational expertise to ensure we provide the guidance required by family members teaching the children. Plus to create useful, interesting educational content that works for the children on our innovative collaborative platform.
We will focus on the communication between the educational professionals (generally non-technical) & developers (technical but not educational experts) because we have experienced problems in this area during earlier projects.
Development Skills & Productivity: We already have a small development team in place who have built the existing app, but we need to grow that team & we need to add specific skills and capabilities.
- OpenTok specialist (or other video platform): we use OpenTok currently to provide the video/audio capability & there are stability problems in the current app which we need to improve to ensure it is 100% stable. It is critical the video works.
Bandwidth issues also cause us significant problems as the user gets a poor experience, we need to utilise expert technical resources to ensure we minimise the problems experienced by users on a range of Internet connections. Of course over the years this will become less of an issue as more users utilise large bandwidth connections (i.e. fibre).
We have managed many large software & App projects over the last 15 years so we know how to recruit and manage a large team of creatives, architects, developers, DBA's, analysts & project managers in order to deliver a software solution on time & on budget.
We have also built a successful multi-channel digital marketing platform from the ground up starting in 1999 & selling it in 2007 (http://www.traction-digital.com/) . So we know how to deliver large software products & meet the busy schedule for improvements and enhancements.
The larger vision: we have a big vision and as the roadmap extends into the future the risks grow significantly, the funds raised in this Kickstarter project will not solve all our future problems. But they will provide a solid base from which we can grow and build upon, especially for the Learning Management System & the Crowd Sourcing Platform. Those will become large projects in their own right in the future once Chatty Kidz is successful and supporting a large user base.
