The Spinster is a psychological thriller that follows a cycle vixen in search of true love into the dark, shadowy depths of romance.
The Spinster is a short film that will appeal to fans of horror films, thrillers, films with strong female characters and of course, to cyclists. It also celebrates the bicycle community, on and behind the camera. The film was written, produced and directed by Kristin Tieche.
We filmed The Spinster in November/December of 2012 in San Francisco, and our goal is to complete the film by end of summer 2013. Shooting a film is a major milestone in the filmmaking process, but you’re only about a third of the way there.
In order to get The Spinster completed by the end of the summer, we need post-production funds, including editing, color correction, motion graphic design, sound design, special effects and music. Then, once the film is completed, we will need to produce The Spinster DVDs. Finally, we need to pay festival fees so we can share The Spinster with a global audience. Through this campaign, we’re asking to raise a minimum of $8,500 for post production costs to complete the film.
With $10,000, we can print the DVDs and deliver The Spinster right to your door. With $12,000 The Spinster can travel to some of the world’s most prestigious film festivals.
The good news is that The Spinster has fiscal sponsorship through Empowerment Works, and therefore has 501(c)3 status, making your pledge a tax-deductible donation!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
If we receive the minimum goal, we will still have to fundraise in order to produce the DVDs and enter the film into festivals. But raising $8,500 in 30 days is going to be a challenge in itself! So we really need your help in spreading the word about The Spinster's Kickstarter campaign.
If we only raise the minimum amount of funds, we'll most likely hold additional fundraising events in San Francisco, drawing upon the support of the local community.
Also, there are ALWAYS snafus in filmmaking, and often technical difficulties will arise, and the post-production process may take longer than expected. Luckily, we're starting this process early in 2013 and our goal of finishing by end of summer gives us a generous amount of time. So we are prepared to keep plugging away until the red carpet is rolling out for The Spinster!
About three years ago, I had a vision about a cycling ghoul who would ride about the city on a full moon night. Originally, I thought about this idea as performance art, just to get a rise out of people. Then one day in early 2012, I was talking to another female filmmaker about how complicated filmmaking is, and how long it takes to make a feature film. I wanted to make a short film that would bring the joy back into the filmmaking process. A film that would be fun to make, and that would inspire me to keep making films. That's when I realized I should transform this idea of the cycling ghoul into a film. I began writing the screenplay in the spring of 2012 with my writing partner (co-producer and supporting actress judy b.) and The Spinster was born.
Oh no! Don't even say that! With all the incredible support from the community - before we launched our Kickstarter campaign and since the launch - I am confident that we will meet our minimum goal. But you know how Kickstarter works, if we don't make the minimum, we don't get anything at all! So please help us by sharing the link to our campaign far and wide, and remember that you can always increase your pledge. I am very grateful to be surrounded by a community that supports the arts, supports biking and supports women in filmmaking. THANK YOU & LET'S DO THIS!
The simple answer to this rather silly question is "No," and I'm surprised that people ask me this all the time! I know they are trying to be witty, but seriously folks. The Spinster is a metaphor for the horrors of dating, much like Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a metaphor for high school teenage angst. The film also presents a lead character who is part heroine, part villain, and I hope she sparks conversation about female portrayals in film.
The projected release date is October 2013. If you contribute at the $75 or above level, you will be invited to a VIP private party to view the completed film.
The Spinster is a short film, and we are aiming for the total running time to be 15 minutes.
